  • Elbow are you listening to FLAC rather than MP3 stuff then? You must have some fairly decent wired cans (or very poor wireless cans)if you can hear the difference?

The difference is clear on anything decent, MP3's are only used on my Sony Walkman, though come to think of it even they are converted (to .oma's I think) when you transfer music to it. Analogue wins the sound war any day

Anyway back to topic: Compact Discs

So I used to be a bit of a hi-fi nerd and then I did some blind tests on some fairly decent monitor speakers on MP3s and over 192kbs I couldn't tell the difference between 192kbs, 320kbs or flac.

After going through 5 pairs of B&W C5s in 2 years (always replaced under warranty) I eventually gave up on them and bought the cheaper Shure SE215s, mainly for the replaceable cable.

They've lasted me 4 years with three wires but the connection on the right earbud has finally given up the ghost.

They weren't quite as good sound wise as the C5s - single driver so always going to be a bit limited but for the price and longevity they were great. Excellent sound isolation, very well rounded for a single driver and punchy without being tiring.

As you can tell, I use the headphones * alot*. pretty much always have them either around my neck or in my ear.

I moved to spotify 4 years ago and haven't looked back - my old ipod with all my 320kps or flac songs is just collecting dust now.

I now have a phone without a headphone jack and I can't be arsed with an extra dongle. I am not convinced about wireless earphones so I'm probably going to get a pair of wireless cans as people I know who know about about it haven't noticed material drop off in quality.

I suspect I'll either get the Sony WH-1000XM4 or the Bowers & Wilkins PX7s. Haven't decided yet. Ideally I'd try them in a shop but, y'know. rona.

Ah, CDs. I remember when they were in development and they made a big deal about how they would play through scratches with demos of them being covered in things like jam and then played. Pretty much every one I owned eventually ended up with scratches that would jump after being used in the car and left in door pockets until the end of a journey.
  • Does anybody get that sensation when they have been listening to a track for a while, when you remove the headphones you can almost hear the same quality in your head?

I was the proud owner of my first CD player in January 1984, nine months after the very first releases on CD. For someone whose diet then was solely classical, to be able to buy a medium without the inevitable clicks and plops on classical LPs (the reject rate for LPs was probably about 1 in 5 bought), they were a revolution.

I also opted for Minidisc when MP3 was coming in as the storage limits on MP3 players were ridiculously low. It must have been about 3 years before I had to concede I'd gone Betamax and everyone else went VHS.

My first experience with a CD player was when a friend came round with his brand new player and a couple of CD’s to try with my Hi-Fi setup. Can’t remember what make it was now (Philips perhaps) but it did sound clear, no pops and clicks (that was novel), also I remember he put s piece of adhesive tape across the entire CD and it still played, without apparently missing a beat. Amazing. It even played when turned onto its side. As everybody now knows with the drive for ever cheaper builds the sampling quality and electronics were cut back to the extent that they began to mimic vinyl records for skipping and the like. There was such hope in the early days
Must use a copy of the CD in the car, never the original
  • I used to sell hi-fi for a living way back when... in a very high end boutique-style shop. We were analogue specialists, and ran an ad in the paper...

Q: "What's the difference between a CD player and a vacuum cleaner?"

A: "They both suck, but a vacuum cleaner does a better job with all the bits."

Sure got some hate-mail for that one...

Having just tried to have a go, The treadmill I got a great deal on at the start of Lockdown.... ;(

It was a hell of a steal but the problem now it's broken is that it seems such a shame to throw it away. All I was after was a cheap Argos one to help with som injury rehab. I'd have felt a lot less guilt binning one of those...

EDIT: I HAVE MENDED MY TREADMILL THAT WAS BROKEN. I did actual electronic engineering and stuff! I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO pleased with myself right now!!!

I thought they fixed CDs in the end by increasing the spectral width.

Could have a go in there about the energy crisis in Texas, but you just know that Biden is going to try to help, despite them voting against him. He's no fun.

    On purpose?
If 'batterygate ' is any thing to go by, yes. I've had a couple of phones and they did appear to be robust physically, but the product lifecycle seems to be artificially shortened by software and OS compatability. Or features that nobody really needs that seem to be intrinsic to the platform/OS and therefore rule out running on older devices.
Hardware impressive, control freak software awful. I have an iphone7 which drives me nuts (currently I can't upload new apps on it because it doesn't accept my Appleid since I foolishly accepted an update and seemingly the only way to reset the Appleid is log on with "my other Apple device". But I don't have another Apple device..... An obnoxious company.

The US Constitution. Well, it's survived this long, but it's looking a little dysfunctional now, when a president can so easily kick away all the norms that have shored it up till now.

This. My wife has an iPhone and doesn't watch to change, however she wants me to back it up, download photos, manage the storage and its a sodding pain in the arse. Particularly when you don't want to use the Apple Cloud as we have everything else backed up in google drive.

    Apple devices. I hate them.

It makes me laugh when Apple users tell you "they just work" (until they don't)... that's because they won't even let you lift the bonnet to see what's going on, let alone allow you to change the spark plugs. Once they've trapped you into their environment, then they sting you for every cent they can.

I've never been able to work out why Microsoft were targeted so aggressively in the early days, but now Apple just gets a free pass for such anti-competitive practices.

Apart from taking notes in court where recording is prohibited, is there any use nowadays for Pitman's. shorthand?

surely that depends on your playback on mp3s?

I don't think anyone can realistically spot the difference between 192kbps and 320kps let alone FLAC on a decent pair of speakers.

Anyone with knowledge and was paying attention would notice that they always applied the fault to the non-read side. Dubious advertising at best.

iOS is quite frustrating, but there are plenty of ways around being shackled to an icloud account, although that may involve shackling yourself to one of the other tech behemoths.

The problem is, even the most prudent will find the way these things are set up makes it hard for them to avoid.

I.e. Assuming I remain in good health and working, I am now looking at a comfortable run to retirement starting from a very modest base at this moment in time.

I would like to move house but in my opinion the cost of housing is too high. It is only so high due to market distortion driven by a combination of this attitude to debt in others and decades of market distortion by governments to facilitate over valuation. I accept there is a supply shortage but the market is not truly reflective.

What am I to do? I can continue to dig my heels in and wait for a re-alignment that seems unlikely or I contribute to the overvaluation through buying.

Nothing happens in isolation and it affects all of us.
