Matt Walls gets a big win taking the "classic" Gran Piemonte in what was, a chaotic sprint.

  • Good win.

Still not sure how come nobody fell at that last roundabout.

Prompted me to check how many GB riders there are in the World Tour - assuming PCS is accurate it's 25, which surprised me a bit.

    Colombia have 22.

  • Here's the last km - with the cause of the chaos with 900m to go.

How did they pass that run-in as being acceptable? 4FS
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.
  • Pretty sure a cofidis and a euskaltel rider both hit the road sign covered in yellow and just bounced off it without bringing anyone down. Remarkable.

Having not seen the race before I was expecting it to be hilly so was surprised when I turned it on to find a bunch sprint was anticipated. They did say the route varies and some teams seemed to have shown up with a squad based around last year's course.

It's an anomaly in the series of one day races hosted in northern Italy at this time of the year, in that a bunch sprint is the usual outcome. The rest of the races are hilly, so teams bring their climbers and don't necessarily have a sprinter available to race this one.

Last two winners were Bernal and George Bennett, with Uran, Nizzolo and Colbrelli also winning. It's a different type of race each year, sometimes hilly, sometimesmountaintop finish, sometimes a sprint.
  • Paris-Tours has definitely become a shiite small race.
    What pathetic coverage.
Already well into tough stuff when we eventually get live pictures, the race in bits and only Kirby to enlighten us to who is where.

  • So far Kirby has given us zero race info. Plenty on the weather though.
The few riders identified have been by Brian Smith. Timo Roosen in close up, had a puncture and it was "some riders".

I thought the gravel had made it a better race pre-rona, but very difficult to get any enthusiasm at all after last Sunday and yesterday.

Wake me up for the the Strade Bianche.

Decent finale for the French chipper ...I like the race tbh

  • Demare made that sprint look hard, given he was up against Bonnamour. He and Stuyven only caught them with 400m to go. A very good finish indeed.
Even better when watched on mute.

How comes Paris -Tours is on PTP? Is it World Tour or not?

It was on the ProTour back when the game started in 2006, and it’s just stayed on the calendar. Note it’s still called PTP not WTP

More importantly, how come there are races on both the French and Italian calendars after Paris-Tours and the Giro di Lombardia?

    Shocking state of affairs.
  • Ben Tullett at the pointy end of the Coppa Agostini over the last climb in a group of 6 - obviously with someone more than twice his age also there.
  • Lutsenko and Trentin with a slender lead inside the final 7kms.

Lutsenko has learnt from 2 years ago – then he led as he and another approached the finish, but then he lost the sprint, as often happens to the one leading the last 250-750 m out in a two-rider sprint.
This time it was the reverse, Lutsenko holding back and letting Trentin lead (which sort-of surprised me too, I usually think of Trentin being tactically pretty savvy).
  • Trentin loses another 2 up sprint.
    This time to Xandro Meurisse.

    I did too.

Will watch the cyclo x now that the RR season has fizzled out.
Wisconsin (Waterloo) lacked atmosphere. Is it worth exporting this discipline across the pond?

There is no other reason to post this in a cycling forum other than because Rob Hatch posted it but the nostalgia hit it gave me should be shared...
