That's a proper win over Philipsen after last week, even if Greipel in third shows there's not much depth there.
Nice work.0 -

There's a delicious irony in talking about Cav beating Greipel at the Tour of Turkey on this thread...
Not to say that I'm not delighted to see him winning a race, any race again! It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.1 -
Genuinely quite emotional watching that, bloody weird feeling! Great stuff.2

Philipsen went way too early, so it was a victory from experience rather than his legs, but definitely a sign of improvement in that he was actually trying to sprint rather than joining breaks.kingstongraham said:That's a proper win over Philipsen after last week, even if Greipel in third shows there's not much depth there.

Winning is winning. Still got to have the legs to be there.TheBigBean said:

Nice interview with Jakobsen after the stage, too.
Cavendish has been sniffing around recently, so it's not a shock win, but you did wonder if it would come.0 -
You have to think that'll do wonders for his confidence, and he was always a confidence rider.Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.1

Absolutely brilliant. So happy.0

Not sure I would describe 200 metres as way too early. Maybe a little since he lost.TheBigBean said:

Similar to his Scheldeprijs move where he got the jump on Bennett.
I think Kirby swallowed his tonsils.

Cycling Weekly not covering themselves in glory.
Under a banner headline of the "cycling world reacts" to Cav's win, we get his team mates interview post stage and Alex Dowsett saying if it wasn't Greipel he was glad it was Cav, Coryn Rivera (who? I hear some of you say) and tweets from Orla and a deputy editor of procycling who's claim to fame is tweeting about Welsh Cakes.
Then they have another headline claiming Valencianna will have an "all star" line up, when there will only be Caleb Ewan, Arnaud Démare and Enric Mas.
They include Ineos, Ag2r-Citreon and Team Bike Exchange in their startlist, when in fact, these teams aren't attending the race."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Absolutely beaming for Cav
As mentioned its not the strongest of fields but as Cav himself says, just to win one bike race you need to be good0 -
This footage of Cavendish immediately after makes me smile. I think there was a certain amount of relief...

Cav rode a good sprint there ... Bennet et Al may have been missing but it's still a good win"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. He now has to beat sprinters on his own team to get full credit?mididoctors said:Cav rode a good sprint there ... Bennet et Al may have been missing but it's still a good win
Et al?
The question shouldn't be who wasn't there, but who are the in form sprinters leading up to today?
Ackermann and Demare haven't won a race this season.
Cees Bol hasn't won since stage 2 of Paris-Nice.
Viviani has one win against domestique (French) opposition.
Groenewegen is yet to start his season.
In the past couple of weeks, Bennett and Philipsen have gone head to head twice, with both getting a win and a second. The latest and arguably the biggest win going to the guy who Cavendish beat, today.
Imo, the only "in form" sprinter, with three wins to date, who wasn't there today, was Philipsen's team mate, Tim Merlier."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.1 -
Bennett has 5 wins already, so others might be in form but not winning because Bennett is pretty good.
Ackerman only got beaten by Bennett and Philipsen a few weeks back.
Sagan has won this year.
Van Aert has won a few sprints quite well.
Demare won (a little race) last week.
Ewen won the sprint in MSR (!)
If you only want to look at winners, there's not really that many who've won anything at all this year in the field at Turkey. There's Philipsen, De Kleijn (who won stage 1) and I think Alex Dowsett is the next highest placed who's won a race this year.

Wins suddenly like buses for Cav.Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.0

Another proper win over Philipsen - no arguing about whether that was his legs.0

Hat-trick tomorrow? (touches wood)0 -
One win was all that was missing in his rehabilitation.

I was hoping he would do the Giro (and win enough to then claim some sort of tour place..), but DQT have promised a Giro place to someone else.RichN95. said:He's done it again. It looked like the Cav of old today. It's a shame he's on the same team as Bennett and probably won't go to the Tour
Anyway, pretty impressive today.0 -
Tactically astute today - Philipsen gets caught up in a bit of shoving and pushing, Cavendish stays clear, makes getting out of that situation slightly awkward, and then disappears off up the road at the right moment. Bit of a mugging.
Once Cavendish went though, nobody else had anything like the pace - Philipsen only closed up once Cavendish was well in the wind, and never looked like coming round (admittedly there wasn't a lot of road left by that point).0 -
Pretty faultless by cav. He was just the fastest guy there"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0

Watching on the catch up (know the result) and quote of the day has to be that Brian Smith has a 'Carlton Kirby mute button'. Yes please mr Smith.1

A very busy day tomorrow, with the first race of the hilly classics week and a half: The Brabantse Pijl, La Flèche Brabançonne or Brabanste Arrow even.
Also tomorrow, the postponed in February, Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana begins, albeit with a severely weakened field and rather uninspiring parcour.
Stage 1 is the second hardest of the race.
