It feels like there's a real lack of commitment from quite a few teams here. They seem reluctant to pick a leader and all work for her to pull vdB back and quite happy to try to get a medal rather than the wind. No matter how good they are an individual rider shouldn't be gaining time in that wind.

I think the wind has neutralised a lot for the ladies today I think . Seems lack luster but I suspect it's really hard out there

The two Brits on the front but there's no purpose in the peloton

If you're riding for second , might as well just sit in. It's not the most exciting race

This circuit is like a cycle center in width .

Yeah but if you have 4 riders in the group commit 3 of them to chase and keep one back to contest for the win. A single rider shouldn't be able to ride away from a bunch of about 40.

The Dutch are all over everything . Kinda got them all beat in the head

They're just too strong, it's killing the racing. Looks like being a 1-2 here with Longo Borghini having finally managed to escape only with AvV for company.

Eurosport would be better off broadcasting the Dutch team meeting where they decide whose turn it is to win

    1, 2 & 4 for the Dutch.
AvV second with a broken wrist! Tough lady.

Very powerful display by AvdB and the Dutch in general. Longo Borghini did her best to hold off AvV but it was never going to happen. Even if she had she may have got relegated for closing the gap, I'm not sure why she left that space on the inside to start with. Vos tops it off by winning the sprint for 4th from a group of 4 including Deignan who finished 6th.

Hopefully the men's race will be a bit more open though.

It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

    Yeeeeaahh... 🙄

You can't blame the Dutch for "winning too much" but it's just a bit... yawnsville innit...

  • Just back off a short walk and fast forwarded the last 30kms.

So, who says women's racing is more exciting than men's?
    A total and complete massacre.
Even a broken Dutch woman is better than the rest of the world.

Still, the course was very pretty.

Longo Boghini sprint was a bit weird as you mention, kept AvdB against the barrier as they built up the sprint then goes left as soon as they go full gas. Elbowing someone’s broken wrist doesn’t look good in slowmo.

Just as well AvV won the sprint for silver, reversing that in Italy would have been awkward

Well it's better when you spread the Dutchies out over different teams. The dominance is ridiculous. Went into the race with three favourites and got 1,2 and 4 for them.

6 golds in the RR in the last ten years (+ 5 silvers), 4 golds in the TT (+5 silver and 3 bronze)

    Oh and this

I suppose DQing her so it was a Dutch 123 would be taking the p*ss maybe.

Sprint infringements rarely get DQed completely. Usually they just get relegated to last in the group they were in, which ELB was anyway.

  • What’s the forum’s view on the course in relation to tomorrow?

It's definitely for puncheurs rather than climbers (who the original Swiss course would have suited). The climbs are short with some steep sections. They're enough to make it very selective if you force it, but not enough to do real time-gap damage if a chase gets organised. There's not a lot of flat anywhere, even the descents have bits of uphill on, so there are some possibilities for attacking from a small group off the second climb and into the Imola circuit - there's 11km from the top to the finish. Roads fairly narrow, but resurfaced very recently.

Should be a decent race - attrition, selections and hopefully some rain ;)

Why are the Netherlands so strong in women's cycling?

Its a fair question , is the competition just lacking a bit of stardust atm or are the Dutch just ahead of the curve , better funded .
  • Why are the Netherlands so strong in women's cycling?

Dutch women are strong in pretty much all the sports that are popular in the Netherlands. Football, cycling, speed skating for example. I'd hazard a guess that's it's how their society is organised

A little bit that. Dutch girls, in general, are encouraged to play a sport so many do, meaning that there's none of the ...issues...that other countries have. Then they are encouraged to try a bunch of sports and then pick the one they re good at. I found it surprising having, like most brits, played Rugby in Autumn, football in spring and cricket in summer, but in Holland, if you re a e.g. hockey player...Then you are only a Hockey player

And finally, the KNWU throw a bunch of money at it, much like British Cycling do with the Track...

Aren't Dutch women also the tallest in europe, so potentially there is a greater pool of more powerful women....
