In response to DeVlaeminck: As they should. But I can't stand the 'come back and comment when you know what you're talking about' posts. Apart from the aforementioned, very few of us really know what we're talking about, but it doesn't mean we can't have an opinion. If zest28 is in the same company as the above then fair enough, he/she can point to superior knowledge and experience, and has the right to say so.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

I did look at the Belgian team and wonder how a nation obsessed with cycling could field such a relatively weak team at the world champs. Their best riders; D'Hoore, Kopecky, etc., are more suited to flatter courses, but you'd think they might have some half decent climbers.
  • Van der Breggen either crash or mechanical.

I dunno, if you could qualify in your country for the World Champs, would you go, even if you knew you were going to be dropped almost immediately?

    Kinda think I would... 😋
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Yep. BBC have the rights for the UK. Caught me out too.
  • Ah, so is it only on BBC in the UK? I've got iPlayer on, but just wondered about the alternative commentary etc

    Thanks for the info

No it is also on Eurosport today, but not tv tomorrow, just the player.
So, the men's race is BBC only.

Have to say that the camera work today is every bit as good as the TDF coverage. Some brilliant photography.

I think you might find it’s not about who has the strongest legs as you never see a race being won by a power lifter.
    Do carry on.

Pogacar was very weak right? Smashing everybody at 6.9W/kg in the climbs. We are talking about power numbers similar to Lance Armstrong and Contador here. The kid is a freak.

Pogacar won because he had the strongest legs, nobody was close to his power numbers. And JV couldn't handle those power numbers Pogacar was capable off. If Bernal had the legs of Pogacar, he would not have been destroyed by JV. Has nothing to do with Sir Dave.

And please, start doing some cycling yourself so that you stop embarrassing yourself making dumb comments bringing in powerlifters.
You're confusing strength with strength endurance. Webboo's use of strength is correct. Strength in sport is generally defined as the ability to carry out work against a resistance and normally measured as a single contraction. Anyway, the key to winning a GT is recovery and the ability to perform close to your maximum for 3 weeks.

Oh, and power is a different thing to strength.

    Peloton pulling it back now

  • Dutch finally came to the front , van der Breggen making it selective

I am surprised that it was Van der Breggen on the front so early.

  • Oh well, at least the Dutch left it until the last 40kms before riding away from everybody. Much better than the 100kms of last year.

  • Lizzie did well to get back onto that group there.

Great tactics from the Dutch though.

When you are head and shoulders above the opposition, it's not really a tactic as long as egos don't come into play.

It looks so slow, presumably due to the wind. Roads are very narrow and quite technical in the approach to the circuit, it feels like a crit on a closed road circuit at times.

The usual slow war of attrition I'd imagine. 14% gradient will see repeated attacks to shell people out the back one by one.

    Then WvA will win :D

No-one prepared to tow a Dutchie meaning AvdB is just going to ride away with this.

What cycling would you like me to do. I’ve done most disciplines except track and downhill mountainbiking. Raced a bit as well, even won a couple. Did a bit of Triathlon back in the day, Yorkshire champion in my age group. How about your good self does mummy let you ride outside or are you only allowed to ride on the PlayStation.

It feels like there's a real lack of commitment from quite a few teams here. They seem reluctant to pick a leader and all work for her to pull vdB back and quite happy to try to get a medal rather than the wind. No matter how good they are an individual rider shouldn't be gaining time in that wind.
