the awesome series in India has recommenced and is reaching new peaks.

As somebody who can remember following Test cricket through Ceefax I remain in awe to the beauty of satellite television

I saw an interesting documentary about the first away test broadcast in the UK. Sky bought the rights for a WI tour and no one was really sure it would work. It's easy to bash Sky, but they did do a lot of good stuff like that.
If Sky offered a sports package that was £10 cheaper but you couldn't watch any football or F1 I'd snap their hand of for it. Cricket, Rugby League (UK and NRL) some occasional darts and golf when there's nothing else on. It would be bliss.

When Discovery bought Eurosport, they made it possible to subscribe to the non-sport stuff only, but to get the sport you needed to pay for the full package.

I don't understand, but I'm sure they think it is a clever way to get more money.

The Ashes a month away and the injuries are looking like they could be an issue, certainly bowling anyway. Looking like Archer's career is going to be blighted by them now.

I can see Archer pulling away from Internationals and going the full franchise route. Couldn't blame him either. 20 over matches being far less stressful on his body, with far higher earning potential.

I'm expecting to see more people doing so as well over the next few years.

    Unfortunately.

I remain convinced that Root was teaching him a lesson on his first overseas tour and ended up permanently crocking him. If I was Jofra I would retire from all but 20/20.

I am not too worried about the bowling as we have specialists in our conditions like Woakes who would also count as an all rounder

Archer unfortunately seems to have persistent issues. my bigger worry is the leaving out of Foakes. He's been so solid behind the stumps and contributed valuable runs down the order too, allowing the "flair" players to go for it.
I'm hoping it is only for the Ireland game and that he's back in the squad when it matters most.

I feel really sorry for Foakes, he should be an all time great but has barely played. His batting average is better than Buttler's and everybody agrees he is a far superior keeper yet Buttler has played x3 the number of tests.

Yes the bloody-mindedness in trying to make Buttler a test player was wrong.

I agree Archer should forget about test cricket and so should the selectors on his behalf.

I've only been following the score anyone have a idea how Tongue did? No wickets against Ireland isn't particularly great.

Wasn't clear. Sorry. I knew what his figures were, but that doesn't tell me if he was an actual threat. Did his bowling ask questions or was it toothless?

Bowled a decent pace I believe, not watched anything back yet to know how threatening he was. Sounded like Potts was a real threat in the morning session but Broad got the wickets.

I am not sure what gain is to be had from pummeling Ireland in a warm-up.

I watched a couple of his overs on highlights yesterday - his first few balls looked fine to be honest but of course that's all they show until a couple of overs where he gets knocked around for a few fours . . . so difficult to say how he got on is my answer!

With the amount of cricket played (all formats) I'm not sure there's much point in any warm-up games

I was thinking that these two getting on the honours board for a century against Ireland is a bit like winning an Olympic gold medal in men's beach volleyball. It's an impressive accolade to have, but you hope nobody asks too many questions.

He's just taken two wickets in one over.
I reckon Ireland will just about make it to day 3....

Struggling to bowl out an Irish side is a little concerning with the Ashes a couple of weeks away...

Not ideal, but I think our refusal to accept the fact Stokes is crocked is a bigger problem

Yeah not ideal about Leach but I don't think spin has been seriously considered as part of any plan in home series since Swann retired.

The story a month or so ago was England were asking for hard flat pitches for the Ashes so they could score quickly and put pressure on the opposition. So spin is then fairly redundant but also to my mind you then need bowlers with pure pace. Subsequently Archer is then ruled out and Wood is fragile, was never going to play all five tests, and as SC says Stokes' knee problem only seems to be getting worse. It's going to be interesting....

First non-wicket keeper captain to win a test without either batting or bowling apparently.

Good job he took a catch or could have been a great TFC

Yep. Back in the team. Says a lot about their faith in the younger crop of English spinners

Whilst it is brutal to see it is also captivating when a player has a known dislike of the short ball and the opposition has the means to exploit it.

I had forgotten how poor Moeen's test batting was just before he quit that format.

Meanwhile Australia are looking in pretty good shape :|

Surrey looking favourites for a win having been set 501 to win! Batters paradise and Sibley playing an anti-Baz innings with 126 off of 395 balls. 5th wicket just fallen with 40 required. Are they going to bottle it?

Weather forecast after the first two days of the test looking potentially iffy.
