  • Once everyone dies, I guess so.

Good IHT windfall as well, as many estates may not have planned for it.

People do seem quite blase about catching it. I wonder if their behaviour would differ if they were not going to get paid for all their time off work.

I worked through so no time off for me.

Do you literally mean you have taken holiday?

I had booked holiday, so I'm now on holiday with covid. I'm considering returning to work tomorrow though.

    Thanks chaps. Interesting anecdotes.

We have already agreed that if one of us tests positive, we'll just accept that that other will probably do so at some point. I mean, we share a bed at the end of the day (literally).

I don't think it is worth it with Omicron when you are fully vaccinated. I think at the outset of the virus you had a better chance of protecting each other with far worse potential consequences if you failed.
There does seem to be a general feeling along these lines that the high transmissibility combined with the generally mild effects (for the vaccinated especially) makes it not worth trying to avoid. I have even read reports about some people holding Omicron parties (like Chicken Pox parties of the past) to 'get it over with'. A bit silly admittedly, but it is probably one indication that we are learning to live with it and that it will (hopefully) be treated more like the flu going forwards.
Especially as acquired immunity lasts 3-6 months if I remember correctly.

Most people I know have just continued working from home through it.

You probably know this, but you're entitled to change that annual leave to sick leave.

  • Apparently Saj expects to be able to "substantially reduce" Covid restrictions next week.

    Who knew?

Is there much point in PCR tests any more? I have done one, but wasn't sure that any result would change much.

Why would they not just turn up with it at work if they are not going to get paid for sitting at home. For a lot of people covid has either no or minor symptoms.

There are some jobs where this is hypothetical. Hypothetically it would be a bad career move.

Maybe more lumpy data, but 465k cases reported today in France. Impressive.

Or it could be a ploy by the unvaccinated protesting at the new vaccine passport.

I went in November and was asked to show it and ID in pubs/restaurants. They have a strange rule about wearing a mask when standing up, so people will sit in a pub maskless for hours, then put a mask on to walk the 2m to door to leave.

Would be interested to know - in the "kid(s)/wife had it, I managed to avoid altogether" anecdotes - if any particular effort was made to stay away from each other.

Just in the interests of understanding what the deal is wrt contagiousness etc.

We isolated as a Family when Wife & both kids had Covid all different times there was no way I was locking my children in there room especially as they had no symptoms. I am still to get Covid after being around it so much which I find surprising.

Been interesting how easily I slipped out of mask wearing in UK Summer and how easily I slipped back into it in France.

If English Public Health wasnt now decided by what is best for Johnson's career we could have a sensible discussion about masks and how we can keep most of the benefits whilst ditching stuff like that that is obviously pointless...

The mask wearing really doesn’t bother me. Two years ago, just before Covid kicked off in the UK, the thought of wearing a mask was alien to me but now it feels normal. Whilst some of the restrictions imposed when Omicron started are likely to be rolled back, if mask wearing on public transport remained, for example, I’d be fine with it.

Did you see that research that showed that the French Covid pass had increased vaccine uptake in the over-60s by 9%?

Yes. I don't know what the still-resistant percentages are for the different age groups, but I'm pretty sure that the 'oldies' holding out were more numerous in France than the UK, so that is good news, given their increased likelihood to end up in hospital.

Fine if you are popping into a shop, or on a shortish train journey, but how would would you feel if you were wearing one all day every day at work?
  • You wouldn't need to if you had a convivial fraternity at work. Would not apply to RC.
  • Good news - vaccine does seem to reduce risk of long covid. Based on people who caught covid after vaccination compared to those before vaccination.
