It turns out the PM specially mentioned the Tour and said it could start on 29th August if ASO put some sensible proposals together.Twitter: @RichN950 -
Look at what is happening in Germany since they relaxed their restrictions.
There is a lot of hopeful denial about how long this thing is going to run for.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

I assume that at some point the virus will have spread widely enough that it will no longer be worthwhile quarantining people. It doesn't seem to be particularly bad in terms of mortality.0

I think the general plan is to get the reinfection rate below 1 (i.e. on average every infected person will infect less than one other), and then reintroduce normal life while keeping the rate below 1.Twitter: @RichN950 -
Not gonna happen. Either you have R below one with fairly severe restrictions or you don't.RichN95. said:and then reintroduce normal life while keeping the rate below 1.
R is currently already around 0.7-0.8ish (testing is challenging), but the German experiment this fortnight shows even a mild lift of restrictions bumps it back above one.0 -

I was saying in very general terms. Of course it will go above one initially after each loosening. It's a balancing act.

It will come as a surprise to nobody that the Vuelta's opening Dutch stages have now been officially canned.

That makes 6 days of the Grand Tours canned which frees up a week for competition elsewhere, or more calendar tinkering."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

The Tour de France could still go ahead despite more sanctions on mass gatherings by the French government.
"The Tour de France has not been called into question," said French sports minister Roxana Maracineanu.
"There will not be any large gatherings before September but with the Tour starting on 29 August, there could be adjustments. It is up to [organisers] ASO to make some suggestions.""Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

Do you really think that what Ineos does defines the race's chance of going ahead?
There are one of only a couple of privileged teams that can survive a protracted absence. SDB has the luxury to choose and it seems Riis finds his attitude selfish and potentially damaging to the sport.
I doubt that he is alone in having these thoughts.
“If things continue to improve in September, major events such as Roland Garros and the Tour de France will take place,” Maracineanu says. “These two events include spectators. They are not kept behind closed doors.”

So, with or without Ineos, it looks as if the race will go ahead, if conditions allow."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
I think we'll know in a few weeks. I'm just moving out of the denial phase for my holiday in the Pyrenees at the end of August, which I can't see happening.
If so, I can't be optimistic about the tour.0 -
Re. Riis V Brailsford there, I read Brailsford as telling ASO/UCI that they want some guarantees and possibly input into whatever measures are put in place to ensure safety - at the very least they'll review them - while Riis will send his team trusting ASO/UCI have done the rights things.
They're obviously in very different positions wrt to wealth and future survival of their teams but it does sound like Riis has a slightly desperate position of "find a way to make it happen" while Brailsford is "if you're going to make it happen then make sure it happens safely".
For what it's worth, given the state of some of the finishing run-ins at various races the last few years and other issues regarding rider safety, Brailsford has a point. The UCI and race organisers only seem to react when riders/teams kick up a fuss or the preventable tragedy has already happened.
Riis has never been averse to taking risks. I think he's probably still thinking like Vaughters was in early March (Vaughters later reversed on this, at speed)
Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
If Froome wants to race the Tour I don't think Brailsford will have a choice but to move his position to individual rider and staff decisions whether they attend the race. Particular if he and his coaches believe he is in good enough shape to win it.
I see Inoes maneuvering themselves into a position to have a lot of influence on what safeguards are in place though.0 -

I'm not sure who is going to do the Giro as it seems to clash with almost every other race. Maybe a chance for the Tour winner to go for the double.

There's plenty of ways to deter crowds. Stop the public getting to the buses at the start and finish, cancel the publicity caravan and stop vehicles from going up any categorised climbs. The tourist fans will save their money for another year when restrictions don't apply and it will just be the locals.

That would be unfair on the teams fighting relegation, who have players who don't want to go to Australia though. Whatever the League decide to do will result in a deluge of whining from self serving clubs, coming up with any excuse they can to avoid the risk of their teams not been good enough to stay up.kingstongraham said:Guy from Perth on radio 5 this morning suggesting the premier league could all fly to Western Australia to finish the season.
