Was Thomas' ride actually just a bit below par, and that's what is making Ala's ride look super normal?

Gs gaps to the other GC riders are surely below expectation. I think an on form Dumoulin or Froome would have smashed it.
Early in this thread I predicted a gap for Thomas of 0.15 (Porte/Kruijswijk) -2.00 (Bardet) on the top twenty. If we exclude Alaphilippe it was 0.22-2.12.

(If we exclude Uran as well it was 0.31 (Porte/Kruijswijk) -2.12 (Bardet))

Tour of Colombia this year. Alaphilippe was in great from. He'd won stage 5 (had 2nd & 3rd on other stages). He'd previously won the TT at San Luis and been second on GC.
He was leader going into the final stage which finished on a 1000m elevation.....

    ....He lost two minutes.

Ineos won't be messing about tomorrow. Kwiatokowski & Castroviejo were 135th and 156th today

    Where's Vasil?

I think people are making too much of Alaphillipe's performance today. Look at the top 10 and Asgreen is the only one who is a TT specialist. This is his third TT win, Geraint has only won 5 (including a national title, a prologue and a short one in the TdF) yet no-one would have batted an eyelid had he won. TDG has been in breaks on tough days and comes third having never won a TT. Uran in 4th has only won 3 ITTs (one of which was a national champs in a country not renowned for producing testers). I suspect Alaphillipe was also more willing to take risks to hold onto yellow another day whilst the race is only just really starting for those behind and they are less prepared to push beyond the limits.

Normally the drug cheats are revealed just before. The start. This time it’s in the middle he’s in yellow and he’s french!

    Oh happy days

I do think Froome could have done a lot of damage on that stage.

Oh well, at least we've made it until nearly the end of week 2 before the cries of 'drug cheat' appear. That must be the longest since the 90s. Makes a change for it not to be aimed at Anglophones though I suppose and for some there always has to be doping or they get bored.

I'm not so sure. He said he hadn't been doing much TT training this year as they thought it was less a factor as the climbing this year.

Just watched the recorded ITV4 coverage. That is just not legally possible from Alaphilippe. I don't care what anybody says that's a Floyd Landis ride if ever I saw one.

The think the people calling cheat should look again at the course. It wasn’t a drag strip and perfectly suited his skills. He might be doped, as might any of them, but I don’t think his ride says anything

    yep true..

I was kinda resigned to an ineos Burgandy-whitewash of the tour.

nice the tour is open again...

Thomas has to attack can DQS survive an Ineos train storming up the Tourmalet... bernal fading in the third by the looks of it too.

So taking into account the stats I posted above and it was a course with punchy climbs and technical elements why would you say the race being won by a rider who is no slouch in TTs, loves punchy climbs and is known as an excellent bike handler winning the race defies belief especially when that person has the incentive of defending the yellow jersey?

If this had been a 40k pan flat TT on wide open roads where the fast riders were averaging over 50kph I might join the cynicism and I might if he holds on to the GC group tomorrow assuming the main contenders race properly.

He's not really a rank outsider either - OK I had to google his ITT results but he's had some good ones including a win - yes he's had some bad ones too but then you don't know if he was flat out in those.

On a course that suits him with the motivation of the jersey and taking risks whereas Thomas as the strong favourite for the overall may have been riding more conservatively.
