And, any old computer with the right software could thrash them.

Can you beat a machine over any running distance?

I feel like if I answer this question it might hinder my point, so i'm indifferent on the matter.
  • Today, more than 20 years since Deep Blue defeated Kasparov, chess engines have even become a lot stronger and increase in playing strength each year. This is partly due to the increase in processing power that enables calculations to be made to even greater depths in a given time.

In addition, programming techniques have improved enabling the engines to be more selective in the lines that they analyze and to acquire a better positional understanding. Even better than the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. Nowadays, there is no human player who can beat one of the best chess engines.

I suppose it says something about the brains of the best chess players that it's taken this long to get to that point.

And also, chess can be simply a mathematical calculation of all the parameters and all processors really do, is work out super condensed paths of 1 or 0.

    Sure, a washing machine.
Presumably you have it covered in a game of chess too?

Only if there's a time limit.

I couldn't quite understand your point of view, but a quick google tells me that Elon Musk's Tesla lost to a human at chess. Now it all makes sense.

Is this still versus the washing machine?

For anyone with any interest chess24 has some good streams and the commentary makes it seem like a high speed sport. There's even a computer assessing the board - it seems people like computers.

Apparently Grand Masters can beat a Chess app on a Tesla, so they have that going for them.

Here is live chess coverage. The other English commentary is far more accessible.

I wonder how many people take the easy option in the workplace £5 Secret Santa, buy lottery scratch cards or tickets , and end up gifting a big win.

    Intrigue.

Doesn't bother me, I don't hear anything they do very often. I don't understand who chooses to buy/listen to it.

    How individuals evaluate risk.

Today's example. Driving towards The City along an always very busy single carriageway A-road in a section with those long drawn out curves where nutjobs tend to think 'yeah I can overtake here' when the oncoming traffic you can't see yet will be doing 60mph+. It's a road I've not ridden in a long time, too much of a suicide alley.

In distance I catch (just) sight of a rider coming the other way, dressed in dark clothing under the trees on a grey day on a grey road, no lights. Well dodgy situation.

What intrigued me the rider was wearing a PPE facemask. Risk vs risk?

Don't care what the origin is, I'm in the "it's annoying" camp.

    It is supposed to be.
