    Sevenoaks is still blue :)

Must be feeling slightly lonely down there...

Nice blue wall we've got there in NW Kent and South Essex. It's f-wit central.

    Which party controls the council?

Tories and Lib Dems now have almost the same number of councils.

Surely the "this isn't great for Labour " takes ignore the 20% for the Lib dems, which will go straight to Labour where they can win.

That and precedent suggests LDs doing well locally is not remotely correlated with GE success.

    This is becoming really apparent.

Even in my world the big capex is going on building capacity and capability on the continent.

Currently 3/4 of my work is on the continent and not in London.

If it carries on this way, might you ever consider moving? It must be utterly dispiriting to witness the exodus.

Yeah but it’s tricky as I need to be able to help my mother in law out.

There's a point in age beyond which moving is a bad idea, because like it or not you'll have already paid for the NHS care you will need and housing isn't as comparatively expensive here as you think - if the meagre personal wealth you have is in £. Plus, there are other, less weird places to take one's skills than the US. i.e. Canada, Australia, New Zealand.

If I had my time over and for some reason wanted to stay in R&D, I'd have taken my skills back to Canada. It isn't perfect, and my god Canadian humour is pedestrian, but it's a whole lot more sensible than the US.

I'd pick NZ having experienced a few Canadian winters but as you say there comes a point in time where moving becomes less and less attractive. My advice to the young would be get out while you can.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Well people keep voting in leaders who say things like “if you are a citizen of the world you’re a citizen of nowhere” and “f@ck business” and “we want to deter people coming here” so Britain’s just getting what Britain deserves.

No, you wouldn't be able to persuade me to love in Toronto or Montreal for that reason. The west coast has a temperate climate though, much like here or warmer. If you can afford Vancouver, great, but "Vancouver" now includes suburbs 2 hours' drive from Vancouver that are frankly awful. If you can find work, Victoria and the island is amazing also. But fairly damp.

The BC interior is much overlooked, but great if you could find work there. Dry and cold in the winter, but plenty to do.

Sounds like you're building up to a plea for lower taxes and less regulation.

The Tory Party has turned into UKIP, with a similar level of intellect and morals, so it's no wonder the UKIP party itself has been consigned to history with this election.

Honestly, if you wanted lower taxes and less regulation who would anybody vote for?

If you go for the obvious comedy answer then please explain why the next 5 years would reverse the actions of the previous 8.

Yeah but it’s tricky as I need to be able to help my mother in law out.

When you no longer need to help your MiL you will need to be there for your parents, by the time they no longer need you, you will be too old.

Yeah that’s fair. I think that’s more important for my wife than for me. Different relationship, different context.

The day that Sir Keir Starmer stands on a world stage and represents this country as the best we've got will be a sad day. Almost as sad a day as paying homage to Queen Camilla.
