  • It's quite impressive to have the same Home Secretary sacked twice in just over a year. That doesn't seem like something that happens all the time.

Shows just how far down the plughole the dUK has been drawn by #toryscum shenanigans when the shiny-faced pig botherer seems relatively sane.

Nothing says a stable government than 3 PMs in 2 years and a cabinet reshuffled in the third a year in.

Cabinet reshuffles are not unusual and home secretaries are usually short lived. Theresa May was an exception.
Sorry, you think this is business as usual?
Yes, but not bringing back Cameron.

Nothing says "we're the change party" like bringing your ex-leader back to the cabinet.

Maybe Lord Johnson could be brought back as health sec and Truss in as chancellor. Actually, Johnson wouldn't be able to afford to take the pay cut.

This is what ensures he won't be the leader of the opposition.
  • Sunak: "This one's done, maybe there's another old barrel somewhere I can start scraping the bottom of?"
  • They'll be bringing back an AI Thatcher soon.

Didn't they try that last year?

6th home secretary and 7th foreign secretary in 7 years.

    What a joke.
  • Sure, but when you think about football managers it's pretty good going really.
  • If he was going for an unconventional appointment, it would have made more sense to bring in David Lammy.

    Four Prime Ministers too.
Three while Biden has been in charge.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    What a joke.

For context, in the period between 11th May 2001 and 11th May 2010 (so 9 years), there were 6 home secretaries: Straw, Blunkett, Clarke, Reid, Smith and Johnson.

Braverman being sacked twice from the same job in the same year is notable, but shuffling home secretaries is not.

Although Labour had only four foreign secretaries in 13 years.

    (Six home secretaries).

Four changes in 15 months is unusual.

I guess they have to stay true to pretending to work on the policies that didn't get them elected.

One might conclude that this is why the HO is such a complete bin fire and how things like the Windrush scandal happen.

That happened under one of its long term occupants though, so I don't think it proves your theory.

The scandal is ongoing as they still haven't made good their multiple errors and under the previous HS have not been very interested in doing so. It's also far from the only mess under that department's responsibility.

  • All of this proves one fundamental rule of politics, for it to work you need serious people making serious decisions, everything else is just noise. The Tories no longer have anyone serious or credible in their ranks.

I guess it shows how bad the polls are that they'll give up any Brexit alliances for any morsel of electability.
  • Appointing ministers who aren't standing MPs feels very undemocratic, I am surprised it is actually allowed!

Why do this if you're Cameron? Just to get fast-tracked to being a Lord?

Because he's been made a lord in this way, he doesn't go through the appointments committee, so no unfortunate questions about Greensill get asked.

He is however importing the scandal back into the cabinet.
  • But he is now a lord, which wasn't guaranteed if anyone looked into his lobbying.

Doesn't make much difference to the next election result does it? I guess sunak thinks he might help save a few home counties seats.

I think it is overlooked how much this point is valued by the electorate i.e. ignoring the manifesto that they all campaigned for.

Osborne is probably glad he didn't get a call. Dorries must be absolutely seething that Cameron has just waltzed into the Lords. 🙂
