Five week ban. Sky not firing him, apparently.

Good, that he's not been fired. His offence would get me DQed so the same should apply to him, same sport same rules, but it was hardly crime of the century.

    Exactly.
Getting fired for an air-waft would be silly.
If all the parents who air-wafts at their kids in my local supermarket out of frustration/anger were sanctioned, they might decide that they might as well make contact if they're going to get done anyway...

Official press release (8th August 2018):

    "Moscon to serve five-week suspension
Gianni Moscon has today (August 8th 2018) accepted a five-week suspension from the UCI following an incident that occurred on July 22nd 2018 during stage 15 of the Tour de France.
Gianni Moscon said: “I accept the suspension given to me by the UCI. I reacted in the heat of the moment and it was never my intention to hit the rider. As the footage shows I didn’t make contact, but I regret my actions and I have already apologised to both Elie Gesbert and Team Fortuneo Samsic for the incident."

Team Sky Team Principal, Sir Dave Brailsford, said: “We accept the UCI’s decision to suspend Gianni for a five-week period.

“This incident obviously happened during one of the most challenging races the team has ever faced. We are confident that Gianni truly regrets his actions and has learnt from this episode.

“We have a duty of care to all our riders which we take extremely seriously. Gianni is still a relatively young rider at the start of his career and we will continue to give him the help and support he needs to learn, develop and move forward from this.”

I never really understand the logic of those demanding Sky sack him - Sky lose a fantastic rider, another team gains a fantastic rider and Moscon just goes to another team. Really, the only party getting punished if he’s sacked is Sky.

Doubt other teams would pay him that well, so you are leaving out one more punishee.

I realise I'm down a bottle of wine, but what's the problem if they do?
  • He shouldn't have been sacked for this incident.

He should have been sacked for being racist. Racists should be sacked, not be told they'll be sacked if they do it again.

How depressingly typical of modern "morality" to think that anyone should be sacked, or prosecuted, or hounded off twitter, or whatever - for being anything.

How about judging people for what they do?

Or should we sack people for being dishonest? Or flippant? Or just for having a superiority complex to all the nasty unwoke masses?

Why should they be the only party who, despite being innocent of any wrong doing, are realistically going to be the only ones to feel the consequences? Especially when he won’t struggle to get a ride elsewhere.

No, I'm not pulling any kind of defence here. Heck, I can't even remember exactly what it is he's supposed to have said. It may well have been bad enough to warrant sacking.
What I am saying is that you can't sack someone for being racist. Especially since, according to some people's definition, all white people are racist. So let's sack all the white people!
Or if that's not where you prefer to draw the line, where would you draw it? Or who should get to decide?

The flip side of that is that Moscon has a (presumably) lucrative contract broken and then goes on the market as a "trouble-maker" and so takes a whopping paycut.

Sorry, absolutely not having this whatsoever.

Yes you can sack someone for being racist and should sack someone who is racist. I don't know where you work, maybe they're ok with it? You obviously sound like you are. It's gross misconduct and abuse for which you should be sacked.

Totally don't buy all this heat of the moment stuff. Yes, it's sport and competitors are on edge. Whatever the incident, you can have a barney, you don't have to bring race into it. It's 2018 ffs.

Honestly, your 'sack all white people' makes you sound like a complete idiot who has clearly never experienced racism.

Usually hurling racist abuse at someone is seen as a clear indicator in identifying a racist person as being racist.

If you're going for the "how can we prove that he actually was racist?" approach then I suppose Sky just imposed a 6 week ban and sent him on a diversity awareness course just in case?
