He's literally just crashed in the final of the Tour of Oman so maybe not...

They have Phil Gil going for the cobbles too anyway.

My sense is that Tom and Phil will get overshadowed by Gaviria this year.
  • Get well soon Tommeke.

Goddamit Boonen! How many years has he hit the deck right before the classics now?

The Paris-Roubaix organisers are claiming more cobbles for this year

  • Oh no! No Saint Python! That's normally the first bit of cobblestones I watch the race on. Re think required for this year then...

    26 112,5 Briastre 3km
    25 116 Solesmes 1km
    24 115,7 Saint-Python 1,5km

I am seeing Saint-Python as still there - and 25 and 26 as new cobbled sections. 25 is uphill and apparently 26 which is still in process of renovation is a tester

Looking at map I cannot see the old Saint-Python

Who the hell was Saint Python? Who in the Vatican thought it would be a good idea to canonize a giant snake?

Where have you got that info from? Doesn't seem right to me. The race distance of 115.7 would put it before Solesmes. Looking at the map, Sector 24 looks like Vertain to Saint-Martin-sur-Ecaillon.

From checking the two maps (this years v 2016) I think they have split cobbled section 6 into 6 and 7, lost Saint-Python, and added two earlier sections 25, and 26

A damn big snake is still preferable than many of that shower.

It is a corruption of Saint Piatus - where there was a famous leper colony; it just gets better and better.

I know it's an Ardennes rather than a flat, but the Cauberg is now 19km from the final at AGR.

Yup, looks about right. They have also swapped Capelle to Ruesnes, which was section 22 last year and replaced it with Verchain-Maugre to Querenaing, same as the 2015 route.

Quite like the tinkering with the route, even if it means I have to rethink where I go and see the race this year. When I first started watching cycle racing, there was a worry about losing sections of cobblestones and not having enough of them to make a decent race. Seems now they have too many to choose from.

  • A further problem created by this World Tour re-vamp.
Dwars and De Panne now at loggerheads over the prime, pre Flanders calendar spot.

Potentially, a huge hit for Driedaagse.

Yes. This seems a bit unnecessary. Dwars is the warmup for the E3, which is the dress rehersal for the biggie, and Driedaagse is the last chance saloon for those out of form to gain some before the big one, and those unexpected, not traditionally classic riders, to show their mettle and get a bit more experience on the twisty roads before the big day.

    I like that narrative.
  • No Kwiat for the Cobbles - a year after winning E3. Concentrating on the Lumpy ones - wonder what he makes of the removal of the Cauberg finale now (also a former AG winner of course).

    That's a shame.
