I meant more that there is no obvious reason why Russia would want it rather than it isn't worth them defending their sovereignty. That said, you only have to look at the worlds conflict zones to see that the wider world only really cares about countries that are useful to them e.g. those with lots of oil.

Ah, I just think Putin is a land grabbing bar steward who wants the U.S.S.R. back and will take all he can get.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Does he wear a red MUGA hat yet?

Probably hedging his bets waiting to see if he is a convicted crim, or Pres.

Nope, I don't think you get Putin.

Are you serious? Ukraine has 9% of the global wheat export market and 14% of the global corn export market. Large parts of Africa are reliant on Ukraine grown food. Plus the Donbas has plenty of coal.

He won't need me to defend him but he was referring to my point of Putin's next target being Moldova.
They are of less importance. Unless you are Moldovan.

I was talking about Moldova. All the things you mention are why I’m surprised Ukraine is ranked as the poorest country in Europe (and was briefly before the invasion).

Ukraine was/is chronically corrupt. Largely the FSU disease, combined with a lot of contemporary Russian interference to keep it so.
That is part of Putin's irritation with Ukraine; they keep on voting in anti-corruption leaders and vote out the corrupt ones and that does not compute.
That was the mandate on which Zelensky was voted in originally.

Apologies, I should read more carefully.

Definitely a strong look.

With Republicans holding up money for Ukraine for some grandstanding about the Mexican border, Ukraine is now desperately short of ammunition and is now losing ground to Russia.
I think it's safe to say a Trump election victory will lead directly to a Russian victory in Ukraine.

That'll cheer them up a bit, in the face of difficulties elsewhere.

Alexei Navalny is dead in prison. Which will come as a surprise to nobody.

Did he accidentally fall out of a high window?

Hope this doesn’t give fanboy Trump any ideas.

Well, it's given him one already... his acolytes are already claiming that Biden wants to do to Trump what Putin has done to Navalny. But I suspect that's A-grade projection.

It’s a weird fantasy world in which the MAGAs dwell. It would be funny if not so depressing.

Kicking off in Belgorod it seems.
Also, this is interesting.

I know things aren't looking great because of the lack of ammo (though maybe things are starting to move on that front thanks to the Czechs and a glimmer of hope in the US HoR), but this mini thread is of a fascinating - the UKR tank moving in fast from the right looks to be the one at risk, but splatters multiple Vlads and machines (see drone footage). This really is up close and personal.

Well knock me down with a feather. In a shock result in the Russian Election, Pootin failed to reach 88% of the vote.
Bet no one saw a Pootin win beforehand.

Feel like most reports I have seen have very much used a tone that it's an "election"

Both BBC radio and Sky have made it pretty clear that though an election, it is rigged and a sham.

A sliver of good news, maybe (but don't hold your breath...)... it looks like the effective strangling of US support might at least be temporarily resumed. Given the recent increase in Russian gains against a serious weapons shortage on Ukraine's part, not least in defensive capabilities, this can't come soon enough.

The $61bn Ukraine package has been passed in the HoR, and now goes to the Senate, where it should pass too. The GOPutinists are furious. I don't suppose Putin is best pleased either. And the GOP speaker (Johnson) will now probably have to rely on Democrat support not to get ousted, so might blunt the power of the MTG idiot wing.

Good, let's hope the Senate passes it and the hardware gets there in time.

Is this heading for a simultaneous permanent ceding of territory and NATO membership? Seems to be the only way to assure some of Ukraine remains. Also creates precisely what Putin wanted to avoid, while allowing domestic declaration of victory.

Reality is if we want to stop deportation of thousands of children mass torture and everything that comes with Russian occupation Ukraine will need another power to put boots on the ground.
I don’t think the west has the political leadership nor do the societies have the willingness to see that through.
Let’s be clear, I’m hardly volunteering so I’m as bad as everyone else.
