  • The always reliable Ben Hodges was on C4 News this evening with a valid point re Mad Putin and nukes. If he attacks Ukraine and puts thousands of Russian troops at risk, the Russian military will turn on him. It’s just too risky.

Has he not already done that by arming them with a load of clapped out or non-existent kit?

There is a train on it. The train is on fire. The heat will crack the concrete and warp the re-bar.

One road deck is intact. Smart money is on this being a tactic to induce re-distribution of Russian resources so UF can press forward somewhere else.

Could well be what they are up to, but in any event it hampers the Russians getting supplies into the area, so possible double win.

'Governor' of Crimea trying to play it down: "Konstantinov added that damage to the Crimean bridge "will be promptly restored, since it is not of a serious nature"." Echoes of 'Comical Ali' from the Iraq war :)

The road might be easy to repair. Looks to me like they were aiming for the train and the explosion largely in the water lifted the road deck upwards and off the supports.

Depending on how many of those supports are destroyed (looks like zero completely destroyed because only one prefab road section is gone), and to what extent they are damaged, repair amounts to dropping a new section in.

The rail line is more interesting, because although it is still intact I'd bet the structural damage from the fire is worse.

Thoughts from the civil engineers among us?
  • If it was in Japan that would be fixed by this evening. It's Russian built and managed by Russians. I suspect it's game over.

Depending on what the actual damage is, you can just stick an HGOB on it. Sorted.

its actually pretty difficult to completely take out a mahoooosif bridge.

Even if it could be fixed with a temp, do you really think the inept, corrupt and thoroughly hammered Ivan army could find one?

Look like the UF have done a pretty decent job of taking out a big bridge.

They can always have another go if that's not enough.

Although as mentioned above, it could also be a diversion from whatever they are planning next.

    True.

The Ukraine post office is already rubbing salt into the wound. Quote from the news this morning:
"Ukraine release a new celebratory stamp
Ukraine's Post Office has released a new stamp celebrating the destruction of the Crimea Bridge within hours of an alleged attack on it.

The stamp features a drawing of two figures who resemble Hollywood stars Leonard DiCaprio and Kate Winslet locked in their iconic embrace from the 1997 film Titanic, shortly before the "unsinkable" ocean liner hits an iceberg and sinks."

Presumably the Ukrainians would just target any engineers trying to patch it up? I’m no military expert but always thought that was a common tactic.

Edit - Russia is claiming a truck bomb which is probably nonsense - the bridge blows in that video before the first truck (I think).

Just had a look at some more photos and video footage (there's loads now) and by my very untrained eye they look to have blown the supports.

Or could it have been one of those remote-controlled vehicles the Israelis like to use...

This has got Olympic standard sappers written all over it - or a remote-controlled drone stealth death boat (I really hope that's a thing).

It's not a sensitive vid btw. It's just an explosion.
