I see that while rapidly retreating from the UF over the Donets river the Russians managed to get over 50 vehicles blown up, including tanks, APCs and trucks, plus the pontoon bridges they were using were taken out, and a f*cking tugboat as well!

They also managed to blow up a bridge while their own vehicles were on it earlier in the week.

Seems to be related to where those tanks store the ammo I believe?

The new Russian tanks separate where the ammo is stored.

Autoloaders pretty much dictate that the ammo is stored in a carousel around the turret. T-90 is the same, as is the T-14.

They found one stuck in a block of flats recently.

This what they do when they hit the ground.

it still has to be stored somewhere where it is instantly accesible and easy to re-plen - if its not auto fed then it has to be to hand for the gunner.

either way, the gun is at the top of the tank so that is where the rounds are.

drop any large explosive device on top of a tank and its gonna go up, this is major part of why you'll never find me in one

I was given a guided tour round Fort Bragg during Iraq v1 by a friend who had gotten himself promoted high up. Even they referred to their tanks as rolling coffins. Not a pleasant place to sit during a sunny day either.

tbh, its not the blowing up thats the bad point.

its either being trapped in there and being burnt alive or drowned if you end up in a river/lake/ditch or when a projectile goes straight through - say left to right - it creates such a mad pressure that its sucks people out, same as being sucked through an aeroplane window.

    sll a bitshit really.

Yep. I know they started it and all that and the soldiers signed up to the Military for many reasons. It's still some poor young sod who's life is cut short though.

Bear in mind, projectile will go through and out leaving a hole the size of an aero plane window, so there’s a lot of fella being sucked through not a lot of hole.

Tbh, though, its a blimmin' dangerous and risky thing to do - chucking bridges around (technical term for this set up is a MGB - medium girder bridge and HGOB - Heavy Girder Over Bridge) - is blimmin' hard, heavy and sweaty work.

I've been part of teams building these before and, essentially, you're a sitting duck unless you've got mage protection, which the Russians haven't.

Still, couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of fellas.

The ramps (pointy bits) aren't too bad - two man lift or, if you're tidy, we used to chuck them around ourselves, one man.

the actual bridge panels (big square things) are a heavy , four man lift.

bank seat beams - long things either end - 8 man , weigh a friggin' ton. don't drop that on yourself.

then fingers imbetween each panel putting pins and bits in, so many moving parts its a 'mare

bear in mind if thr Russians have just lost a whole load of engineers thats their water supply, sanitation, EOD, road mending, dems specialists all gone. Plus a shedload of combat arm troops.

infanteers are great at fighting but they can't do sod all else.

So if you get an order from on high that amounts to, "Lads, we are going over the top. The weather is good, visibility I great, and we are going over the top. We can't have anyone running, because you might trip. And wear a bright sweater so we don't lose anyone."

... I mean stupid question, but how in hell does that play out? As a civilian, if someone else asks me to do something manifestly stupid I only do it if it's their money at stake.

As neither a leader nor a follower, I really struggle to empathise.

There was a story (who knows if true) of a Russian commander complaining he was struggling to motivate his troops even after he shot some so I guess that is one way.

Also stories (also who knows if true) of Wagner group being used to shoot deserters.

Well it turns out that because Moon Face hasn’t called this a war, his minions can legally say ‘nah, I’m not going ta’. And they either get a fine, or they get sent somewhere else. There are lawyers In Russia doing major overtime sorting them out.

    its a tricky one.

you follow orders generally - you know its daft, they know its daft, but hey ho, crack, thump, time to earn your pay.....

    HOWEVER

and this is the big, big one that civvies don't get, you do it for your mates - these are lads and ladies that you've trained with, gone out with, lived with, pulled birds and blokes with, spent 24x367 with.

You go from the ridiculous to the sublime. Gettingpissed in Cyprus after a week diving and drinking and laughing to shittingin plastic bags hiding in a hedge for a week in Bandit Country, N Ireland knowing that if you get rumbled then its gonna hurt.

busting drug cartels in the jungle in Belize followed by days sleeping and drinking and laughing at Cay Caulker? Yip.

You'll never go out on a sesh or laugh as hard if you haven't Served.

going in the Services - Army, Navy, Air Force, and I'll include Merchant Navy here - you go to places, do things, experience stuff that you'll never ever do as a civvie.

Don't get me wrong, you don't like everyone you work with but, when it all goes wrong, you do it for them. Again and again and again....

the pay isshit as well, by the way.
