I think a lot of the nuclear talk is for the domestic audience, to bolster the "Russia is strong" narrative.

Wouldn't rule out Russia dropping a small one somewhere in the Ukrainian wheat fields to make a point, though.

Would become the biggest pariah state in the world if that happened. For a long long time.
Does anyone in charge in Russia give a sh!t about that now?

The Flakpanzer Gepard that the Germans have given Ukraine is a serious bit of kit. It can shred aircraft. They're sometimes used in conjunction with Stinger teams on foot who take advantage on the Gepard's radar. They even started fitting Stingers to the turrets as well. It's got a range of about three and a half miles, so f*ck being a Russian pilot in the vicinity of one of them.

Oh and it can also be used against tanks.

Unfortunately not much use without the supplied 35mm ammunition for the Oerlikon guns, which the Swiss have just refused Germany permission to re-export.

I highly suspect that that has now changed after yesterday's announcement by Lambrecht at the meeting in Ramstein. The Swiss saying no to ammo was earlier in the month. They're not about to stick them on transports without giving them shells.

Sure. In the modern world being a proper pariah utterly ruins a country.

30mm ammo for RN systems won’t be any use on a gun that fires 35mm. There are also several types of 35mm Oerlikon ammo, not all of which would be suitable for AA use.

its a 35mm round for a standard NATO weapon system.

    it won't be a problem.

or they may just buy them from a factory.

My bad. But as MF has posted - there's a shed load of countries that use the 35mm. The Swiss are not required. They can sit at home and weigh illegally procured gold while other folk get on with helping Ukraine.

Anyhiw, Russin air support is tat.

most probs they'd use this against light armoured stuff, truck or troops in buildings.

Using a gimpy or 50 to cut doors into buildings is pretty common, this thing will just take down wslls in one hit.

If you put soil and the relevant seed into a 35mm gun then watered it, could you grow poppies out of it?

    Stupid Humans.

If we’re a dud cosmic experiment, is there hope?

Perhaps one day a freely evolved machine will think about us stupid humans who nonetheless managed to set in motion the processes that led to its existence. Then, maybe, it will do the thing we never could: make us into something better.

I suspect it’s required specifically for AA, as the Ukrainians already have heavy weapons mounted on their IFVs which do that job. If all they wanted to do was knock holes in walls, they wouldn’t need a specialist radar guided AA system..

i think they may use it for whatever needs doing at the time.

if there are no Russian air assets kicking around they'll use it for anything they want.

Well yes, but the point I was making is that if all they wanted to do was engage three Russians hiding in a farmyard toilet block, then they already have stuff that can do that..

Tanks tsking out snipers is well common.

no point in risking blokes if you can use 75 tonnes of armour instead.
