Reports that Russia are now claiming they only ever wanted to secure Donbas and Crimea and their military campaign will now turn to securing those objectives.

    Be interesting how this develops.

yup - some General declared today that they had secured their primary objectives and were moving onto their main aim, as per DeV's post.

Quite strange primary objectives - ie turn world opinion against you, get smashed to bits, destruction of your own economy and your President about to get charged with war crimes - but hey, if thats what they were after.

Methinks they'll get smashed there for a bit as well and then negotiations will happen - tricky bit for the Ukrainians is balancing forces around all the fronts
How were their main objectives met by attacking Kyiv and Mariupol? That's like trying to scratch your back by grabbing your testicles.

    exactly.

it all smells a bit fishy

    I Googled to find out.
Race goes ahead. Of course it does. It would take a direct hit to be cancelled.

Bit disappointed about this. I (wrongly) assumed that the drivers' meeting was about the ethical issues around driving in a country that had just executed 81 people. It turns out they were only concerned about getting hit by mortar fire while they were driving.

I'm sure the Saudis would let the teams leave with no trouble at all if the drivers decided the race wasn't going ahead.

Should never have been out there in the first place though.

    It’s really on the organisers.

The drivers just want to race and the fans just want to watch it.

We’d all rather it wasn’t in despotic nations.

    So who’s fault is it?

I’ll probably end up watching the World Cup even though I object to it being in Qatar for all sorts of reasons.

You really don't need to say why you object to the WC being held in Qatar.
    The whole thing is abhorrent.

Twitter is really starting to fill up with videos (that I wont share on here) of dead/injured/captured Russians with red armbands and a greatly reduced number of dead/injured/captured with white bands. I'm no expert etc etc, but I reckon a fair number of the irregulars/conscripts/non-ethnic forces have been used up now (the white bands) and the 'proper' army have started getting a total hiding. The captured ones look pale as ghosts. They're in terrible shape.

Also - UF are now using blue armbands. They're allegedly binning the yellow ones to try and avoid infiltration. Arm band rotation.

Video doing the rounds of captured prisoners being shot in the legs to disable them - purportedly Ukrainians on Russian POWs.

I suppose these are the realities of war.

That would be a war crime if true..

The thing is, could the Ukrainians feed and house these POW's or send them back to Russia without fear of them returning?
On another tack, will it further de-moralise Russian troops knowing that might happen?

Still a war crime but given the civilian targets bombed by the Russians, I guess there is deep resentment amongst Ukrainian militia/troops.

Would also be exactly the sort of thing Russia would want people to believe about Ukrainian troops.

Well yes it is - whether it's genuine and who is doing what to whom and in what context it's hard to be sure.

This is the longer video - last 20 seconds if you don't mind seeing it - I've never seen anyone shot so can't judge how real this is.

Given we are completely unable to charge Russia with the crimes they are committing. Who really cares if the POWs all go back without working legs. It might not be politically correct but then do Ukrainians care after watching Russians shell their towns to destruction.

Personally, I always feel there is value in retaining the moral high ground. Just because someone else gives scant regard to the laws of war doesn’t mean you should stoop to their level. After all, that’s exactly what the Kremlin wants and gives them what they view as justification to crank up the level of depravity they display.
