Nothing remotely clever today, but I like the way the magnificent Chittlehampton tower seems to grow out of the village. (If you're interested, it's a classic c.1500 Somerset church tower, but in Devon - a real outlier.)

I cancelled any sunset pics, but bumped into Gatey Mcgateface.

I think this almost gets the contre jour greenness about right.

I took a stroll along the coast path to try for a sunset. The sunset was a disappointing affair. Oh well, pack up and go home. I then notice the spare camera battery was missing. Unwisely, I decided to retrace my tracks to try and find it. A stroll turns into a 2 hour walk. Battery still missing. On a positive note, I saw a small seal, 2 birds of prey, a fox and cub and lots of bats.

    Bad luck.

It's little comfort, but the sunset here was rubbish too. Didn't even try, and that only involves a two-minute walk.

This is what photography is all about.
Sometimes there may be photos taken. 🤣

I am not sure. You have no chance.

Forgot to take my camera with me today and actually stumbled across some nice photo opportunities. Did a really bad job with my phone instead.

Once you realise what you can't do with your phone, you'll keep on seeing all the photos you miss because you haven't got your camera with you.

Yeah, could have done with a zoom lens today to get the swans from a better location. There was chest high grass on the riverbank so could only get close at a couple of locations that didn't let me get the angles I wanted.

All this talk of a heatwave inspired me to drive east to get a fix of sunlight before the monsoon tomorrow.
This was taken before the clouds broke, hence the b/w. Mmm the warmth.

With selfie apology, but the shapes on this one just worked out so nicely... the only attempt.

    Good effort Brian :)

Shame the guy on the right is holding the saddle differently ;)

Is that some kind of a test? 😉

Anyone else got a really strange red sky tonight? It's cleared here and no pics but my parents captured it (not a great image though unfortunately). Slightly annoyed I missed it.

Edit - this one is stolen from Becky James' dad on Instagram

No, but it was weird last night, with a massive sun...

I still can't wrap my head around the size/distance involved, when I remember that it's 93 million miles away, and is still enormous.

There was a promising moment tonight, then the inevitable cloud cover... 🤬
    Last night though...

Edit - Shame I can't be bothered with a photo sharing website...Colours are woeful. 😣

Giant sun and red skies were due to Saharan dust in the atmosphere. There was even a pink and yellow rainbow.

Saharan dust doing its thing tonight. I realised that whilst it makes for pretty good sunset photos it is actually the light it affects the most and you can't really capture it.

This one is probably the closest to reality

    DSC01855

This is more what I was getting straight from the camera no matter what settings I was using, the sky is pretty close to how it was but foreground should have been lighterDSC01858

If you were shooting RAW then you will be able to pull the details back out of the shadows. NB - Always shoot RAW unless you need to share immediately as the camera dynamic range is much less than the human eye. (Or use HDR if available.)

As an example, here is my shot from my post above as it would be if I didn't pull the shadows.
