When I worked at county hall, it was great. Half day and got to see a couple of the effigies that used the carpark early in the day. The work that goes into them is great.TheBigBean said:
Trains weren't an option for anyone this year. Genuinely interested how anyone got home or whether they finally managed to reduce the crowds.Tashman said:
Trains not an option for me unfortunately, would be a good yomp into town from the nearest points I'd be able to get to park, or an 8 mile yomp home on country lanes if I was able to get dropped in early. I do enjoy all the local brew from these parts though.TheBigBean said:
They used to run late night trains, but I saw this year they were saying there would no trains after 3pm. Would like to take the kids one day and maybe another Sussex one would be a good starter.Tashman said:
Been here 20 years and never been into Lewes for the 5th. Nightmare access and ours is always a good night, so don't feel the need to do it twice.pinno said:
I am aware of that. I lived in Eastbourne for a while and bonfire night was always spent in Lewes accompanies by loads Sussex 4x and grilled whatever. Late train home.Tashman said:
No, this was my village, which is a part of the Lewes District. Bonfire season lasts for about 8 weeks in these parts with different villages hosting other societies each weekend from late September through til the later part of November. We're always the Saturday before "The 5th", unless, like this year, that is a Sunday. Can't possibly burn effigies on the Sabbathpinno said:
Was that at Lewes Tash?Tashman said:Not the best quality, but I do love the atmosphere at a Sussex bonfire
A few years ago, I stood next to one of the bonfire's enemies. He had tried to bring in a bit of health and safety. As a result, an effigy of him was burnt one year. His teenage daughter was very proud of that.0 -
I went to Ottery tar barrels once. Glad to have done it once, as it's utterly mad, but never again. Anyone less than 6ft needs to be comfortable with not seeing anything and moving in a bit of a crush of people, wherever it happens to be shifting.1

Reasonably pleased with my quick retouch of a photo today - the streetlights gave an unpleasant red glow to the foreground in this phone photo (top), and bleached the colour out of the sky, so I retouched the two halves separately and ended up with something that I think looks like what I was looking at.

A squelch across some fields.

I squelched along some lanes too, on the bike, for some autumnal tat.

An ancient oak wood. I left it late (getting v dark), but luckily there wasn’t a breath of wind, which made a long exposure possible without blurring the leaves.
A slight re-edit (fresh eyes). Lifted shadows + cooler tones.6 -

With a weather warning for high winds, I made the effort to try and capture some colour before the trees are stripped bare. It was sure moist under foot, with the occasional power-shower thrown in for good measure. I'm overall pleased with the result.
The rain somewhat cleared up in the afternoon, so out for a mud fest ride.

Hoping to get to Lustleigh Cleave for autumnal Hughs next weekend - the oaks are late turning colour this year.2 -

I messed up some of the bigger waves shots, by not noticing a low shutter speed combined with too much camera movement (buffeted by the wind). I don’t like pushing the ISO up, but it would have been better with the fading light and subject.
I got away with a few, though.
Kestrel.
Kind person adding scale.

Scale makes all the difference in #2.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.1 -

is that snow on the hills?seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

Yep. There was a heavy frost at sea level but snow on the higher hills. We sailed into the Arctic Circle this morning and just passed some fjords on the horizon with snow covered cliffs. Land in Tromso tomorrow morning where there is snow forecast and temps of -10c.pinno said:is that snow on the hills?
Got my first glimpse of the Aurora Borealis last night. Now I’ve got signal again I’ll upload photos shortly. They aren’t great as I had to shoot hand held on a moving ship with a strong breeze. Hoping to get some on our land days but with the snowfall it might be too cloudy.0 -
