You don’t want to be riding anything smaller than 35mm on the roads where this was shot!Ben

With Don Keyote. 🤣The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Yay, more flowers.

A little background. Suva is now the capitol of Fiji but Levuka was the capitol back in the heydays of the Empire. This is how the main shopping area of Levuka Main Street looked last month.

Making the most of a damp morning, not watching TV...
The first one was a creative crop, as what I thought would be interesting wasn't as interesting as the stalks...
I thought I ought to get in a flash of a flag for the French folk, as they seem to follow the royal family much more than I do...
And my namesake...

I find atmospheric forest shots surprisingly elusive... I feel that they shouldn't be, but offhand I can't think of any that I've taken that I've been really pleased with.0
-
Yeah, woodland shots are prone to failure. Conditions play a large part. Although it doesn’t look like it, this was taken in low cloud/mist and part sun, which helped in separating the trees.
A big problem is, unlike the eye, the camera provides little distinction between foreground trees and every other tree, branch, twig and leaf in the background, resulting in a confusing mess with little depth.
A path is the obvious solution to provide some depth. Finding a clearing seemed to do the trick today.
I find slightly underexposing can help, as (especially when in full leaf) it’s obviously naturally quite dark, which the camera tries to wrongly remedy.
Full sun is said to be the worst weather to shoot in, as the highlights and shadows complicate an already complex scene.
Anyway, I like a challenge (and hanging around in woods) so am happy to give it a bash.

And try not to include sky. Valley sides are good for this.0

Sky was out of the question for this one...
But it's rather more (burnt) trees than 'forest'...1 -

That's certainly got atmosphere, but I suppose it's taking a shot of a woodland from outside rather than under the canopy. Nice though.0

Yes, from my house, in fact... under a canopy, but not a woodland one.
I've had a quick rummage through my French forest photos, and deeply uninspiring.0 -
Oh, I just remembered my favourite tree-canopy photo. Right place (Bellever), right time.

And this one. Maybe Dartmoor is easier than my bit of France, or maybe I just need to try something different there.

No, on the River Dart between New Bridge and Dartmeet. I've not been to Wistman's Wood with magic light, and these days it's just too popular. Black--a-Tor Copse would be where I'd head now.0 -
That's a shame, but not surprising given the amount of misty mossy tree pics out there.briantrumpet said:masjer said:^They tick all the boxes. Wistman's wood?

I think it won't be long before they fence Wistman's Wood off. Last time I went there, as I left, I was convinced that a rave was about to begin there, there were that many people walking up the path to it. It is a magical place when deserted, but too many people not respecting its fragility will kill it.
At least Black-A-Tor Copse is a little harder to get to, so less attractive to those who want only want to walk 500 yards from their car.0 -
Here's a jungle I used my machete to traverse this afternoon...

Not good weather for riding, but the mizzle/mist did its thing in the woods.

Lovely - I've not got anything like that. Must remember to go down to the woods when it's misty.

Thanks, I was pleased with the outcome. On the edit, I had to really turn the green down as the fresh beech leaves looked luminous!briantrumpet said:Lovely - I've not got anything like that. Must remember to go down to the woods when it's misty.

Ha, you've just reminded me of a misty one I took five years ago... road trip with my mum, driving through cloud for what seemed like forever - I wanted to show her one of the mad roads I'd ridden - and then, suddenly, just before we turned left to descend to the gorge, we emerged out of the top of the cloud, and had a picnic. Magic.
This was the silly road we'd gone to see, on a sunnier day one August:
