Another thing is GB were not as poor at WC's during this cycle as people think.

In the 4 world champs between Olympic GB won 26 medals 12 of them gold. They also led the medal table at 2 World Champs and were 4th in another. Yes Paris last year was awful with only 3 silvers but the rest hasn't been that bad!

    In the same time frame

Australia won 32 medals 11 of them gold.

Germany won 31 medals 13 of them gold.

France won 19 medals 11 of them gold.

but if you only count Olympic events it turns out as

    Germany 9 golds from 18
    TeamGB 7 golds from 19
    Australia 6 golds from 18
    France 6 golds from 11

which would suggest things were more evenly matched at least between Germany/Australia and Team GB, not a 6 (11),1 (2),0 (2) match up.

That's was my point. Vogel and the French had been complaining that GB came from nowhere when they didn't. Everyone was quite even and only one team raised the game for Olympics.

Brilliant play from the GB hockey players, tough girls. If only the England footballers played with that conviction.

Hockey/cycling trivia: Crista Cullen, the GB defender (first one to get whacked in the head), was in same school class as Chris Froome.

    Ha, no way.

That was good to watch - thought they were going to concede a few times at the start, but dominant in the end.

Also they have made some pretty big changes to the rules of hockey since I last played.

They change rules every season. They're playing some in this tournament that haven't reached my level yet. The first question every pre-season is "what are the new rules this year?"

I think she was only there for a few years. Although she had moved back there when she quit hockey after 2012.

They ve abandoned the whole backboard thing on penalty flicks then...?

When I last played we had 2 halves, not 4 quarters. And free hits were free hits - they seem to be able to just start playing now. Long aerial balls seem a lot more common but that's possibly just because they are much, much better than anyone I played with.

Also my club didn't have access to video umpires...

That's for penalty corners. Hit shots at penalty corners have to be backboard height. Flicked shots can go anywhere - which is why they mostly flick. That's always been the case.

Long aerial balls seem a lot more common but that's possibly just because they are much, much better than anyone I played with. They're still not used that much - they're not that effective (although a weak spot for our first team). Sticks have changed a lot

Penalty corners are f'ing terrifying - I played left back and usually took the left or right post (so less dangerous than running 2 and much less dangerous than running 1) and I once took a ball to the abdomen so hard the bruise lasted for weeks and you could see the dimples from the ball in it (was pretty gutting at the time as well, because it meant we gave away another penalty corner...)

Glad they've made face masks compulsory.

Ha great fact that, looking forward to the final.

Another one which has been reported a few times is Hoy, Kenny, Redgrave and Farah born on 23rd March.

Looks like Bauke Mollema was in his class too.

I used to be a keeper. A couple of my finest saves were shots in the direction of my face that I never consciously saw. Leaves you a bit shaky.
