Not as good as Tom Pidcock might end up being once his career is finished.

In this discussion I'm afraid there's always the Kenyan elephant in the room.

Why so? The comparison is between the riders, not about their heritage.

    Indeed it is.

  • To the original question. He's good, very good. In fact he's 4 TDF and one Vuelta good. Doesn't that count for anything in this discussion?

How many GT wins do you have? Compare him to yourself. He's in another league of talent for sure.

Well this is excellent. Certainly no room for voices UNLESS YOU'VE WON GRAND TOURS

I certainly wont ever voice a view on a pro cyclist, because after all I am not one. Nor will I voice a view about an MP, because after all HOW MANY VOTES HAVE I EVER GOT IN AN ELECTION

  • Hey it's just my down to earth view that you don't win that many top level races of you're not very good indeed. You can express views by all accounts but IMHO the evidence is there, he's good. All the rest just seems about arguing he's doped or cheating or something without evidence.

It's my simple opinion that Froome being good has the evidence behind it in terms of his wins. That doesn't stop anyone discussing it til the end of forums if they wish.

It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Cycling should be made more exciting.
    Why?

The sport is what it is. Is it really that important to the sport how exciting it is for spectators per se (yes, I know excitement breeds TV coverage / sponsorship / revenues)? But is any sport deserving of just be judged on whether it is exciting or not, or do we admire the skill / endurance / physicality in the way the sport is practiced.

  • How good is he?

I think we'll find out later this afternoon ... If he can win TT WC gold then there's not much left to prove on his (sick) bucket list ...
Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.

So everyone who is better than me is in the same category? That's a lot of cyclists.

I can say with some considerable confidence that you're better than me

IMO it wont be boring. Whatever little evidence we have of radio comm has been very positive.
Anyway, it was one of the many things UCI/ASO can do to make it more interesting.
I'd like to hear about peoples suggestions too on how it can be made so.. :D

Too many sports have been ruined by people attempting to make them 'more interesting'. Leave things as they are and if you don't find it interesting maybe follow a sport that you do?

Alternatively read Rapha books containing accounts of the same race in 20 years and you'll probably find it was exciting after all. Cycling hasn't changed - as Iain points out it's the way it is covered that has.

If he gets a podium it will be one hell of a year.
  • Keldermerckx should go well on this course.

Crikey. Roll on a Dumoulin vs Froome GT.

If he wins this Giro is he second only to Merckx?

Remember, this is purely about Grand Tour ability.

Actually, you couldn't put him above Hinault yet.

As rightly mentioned, Hinault is way above Froome. It also depends on what eras you're including. You've got Coppi and Anquetil, and Indurain and Contador in there more recently. And I say all that as a Froome fan.

Indurain and Contador tainted by the EPO era

Hmmm.... On the basis that aside from a DNF to injury he never came lower than 2nd? Or that he won multiple of each GT?

    Merckx has a GT more.

Rode 13, won 11, second twice (once to his teammate), DNF once (crashing while in yellow). And against better opposition than Merckx.

    OK, I'll bite.

Armstrong never won a Vuelta (one ride, finished 4th) or a Giro (one ride, finished 12th). Were his palmares to stand, we culd count him the greatest TdF rider ever, but relatively low on the greatest GT rider ever.

Yes, I know Froome hasn't actually won the Giro yet.

Today’s performance in the Giro was pretty special. It was down to the team in no small part, but you still have to be able to use the advantage they give you, he sure did today.

If he finishes in the top two in Rome, only Merckx and Hinault will have more top two finishes in Grand Tours (Anquetil will be equal)
