I’m confused, I’m assuming Remco won the junior race but the last actual mention of the race on here had a German leading with a few km to go.

Remeco attacked on the final climb and was comfortably clear all the way home. The German was hanging on for silver.

So. Today’s WRR. Head says it’s between the Dutch riders Anna van der Breggen and Annemiek van Vleuten, but the Aussie team is going to be tough to shake off. Heart is hoping for an attack by Elisa Longo Borghini or Kasia Niewiadoma

The Swiss seem to have a great cycling programme; strong in all disciplines, road or off-road.
Gino Mader, who came fourth, is arguably a brighter prospect than the winner Hirschi. Hirschi will move up from the Sunweb development team to the pro team next year and Mader is rumoured to be signing with Dimension Data.

Story of the day for me though was the Finnish lad in third who rides for French amateur team, ECSEL Saint-Etienne Loire. The team are understandably chuffed to bits with his result.

I've just realised that there's no live coverage of the Mens Elite on Sunday on Eurosport.... it is on BBC2 from 13:45 to 16:30 with commentary from Simon Brotherton, Chris Boardman and Rochelle Gilmore.

It's showing in the Eurosport Player schedule from 8.10 to 16.30. This is for the uninterupted UCI feed, probably with Anthony McGrossen commentating, rather than CK.

Tis also on the red button:
08:35-12:20, Cycling - Men's Road Race, World Road Championships, BBC Red Button and online (08:35-16:10, Connected TV and online)

Plus freeview channel 601 for red button coverage

That appears to have been the kiss of death as they’ve all gone now.

Or maybe you weren't watching at 90k to go when there was no sign of any Brit. The ones who may influence the race all sat up shortly after, allowing the also rans to get back on.

Classy 1/2 by the Dutch favourites, but she still had to catch and drop all those riders ahead ... and with around 40km still to go
  • How did she manage to get so far ahead?

By being significantly stronger than the rest.

Most dominant performance in a world championship road race I can remember.

Hi from Hong Kong. Will probably not be able to watch the race, but have fun watching the second to last meaningful race. Will be looking forward to reading your reports!

  • Amaliek van Vleuten has just been taken into the medical center in a wheel chair.

According to what I can see from the Dutch reports Annemiek has a very swollen knee and has gone to the hospital to ascertain what the problem is.
How did she manage to get so far ahead?

A group broke of four-or five including Ellen van Dijk broke free from the chase group before the second to last time up the climb. Then on the climb v/d Breggen and Spratt broke from the second group on the road and bridged over to van Dijk and co, and then just kept going, caught Rivera who had been out in front for ages and then dropped her and then before the top of the climb v/d Breggen who was annoyed at Spratt just sitting on accelerated away to get at least a 50m gap before hitting the descent. Spratt couldn't close it on the descent and v/d Breggen just slowly eeked the gap out.
    Correlation is not causation.

That was an impressively powerful display by AvdB.

Saw the off for van Vleuten happen, road furniture with no flag waving whistler, squeeze and pile up. Looked v painful at the time.

Jeannie Longo won by a greater time gap about 30 years ago, bit over 4 mins (although, as we've since found out, there is question mark about some of her performances). And imo not that nice a person anyway; vdB's nature appeals more.

Impressive that the Dutch also had 3 others on the top ten, and that Guderzo now has all three coloured medals. Sorry the Canadian didn't at least get 4th, as she seemed to do the most work after vdB and Spratt had gone.

The commentators I had (not UK) called Guderzo (34 years) 'old' and Spratt (31 years) 'young', in case any women want to know about when it all changes!

Do you know her? I ask because my parents in law do as do a number of other people I know locally and everyone says how nice she is. I've never met her, only crossed her on the road one day.

I know Pauline Ferrand Prevot doesn't like her much, but maybe PFP could have learned some lessons about longevity, assuming it was not all EPO fueled. PFP says Longo was never a good team member and she never really seems to have participated in the French structure.

  • Impressive win but didn't really enjoy the race. I hesitate to suggest that perhaps that race showed why the women don't race the same distance and route as the men - we'd have had individuals coming in solo separated by many minutes.

I enjoy womens racing but perhaps the lack of strength in depth the men have means it suits different parcours.

And she rode the remaining 96km on it, made the attack that setup the win, and still finished 7th

Well we will have to see what kind of race the men treat us too, clearly its possible to attack and escape on the climb and solo away, which I don't think anyone expected would happen given the gradient, or would allow a Dutch rider clear favourite to do, and despite the fact I was pretty sure on who would win however the result came about, I think that manner of that win is very un-typical of womens racing as the norm nowadays. It's slightly annoying it's the one race most people then get to see and then conforms to a gender stereotype which is unfair imo.

But you would have to ask all the riders in the peloton why they might have talked a good game before the race but couldn't deliver when it mattered to an obvious race winning break to understand how that happened and I don't think we ever get that level of analysis post race
  • But even on a much tougher parcours nobody could be (justifiably) pretty certain who wins the mens race. I'm certainly not arguing women's racing is less enjoyable to watch more suggesting that if we are designing a route to make a good race we may not come up with the same route for the women as we do for the men.

Yates running a 34x32 for today’s race. Steep then.
