I do think that having Nato cuts down the chances that we go to war with our neighbours.

Nato provided a naval patrol round the British isles during the conflict. I think the BOAT came from the German Navy. That is what Nato is supposed to do. They probably didn't believe in the war or they would have adopted the doctrine = attack one of us and you attack all of us.

Who gives one anyway. The islands are clearly not british.

It was not a war, it was a conflict. From memory this makes a huge legal difference
Also the French intelligence agency worked with British agencies to manipulate Argentina's attempts to buy more exocet missiles (a French missile system). They refused to seek direct but one if their agents was used as a murky arms dealer who could get the missiles argentina needed. They spent the conflict with the French spook believing he could and would get them the missiles.

So basically at least one NATO country helped with the efforts to liberate the island. Apparently more than the Americans did. At the time the Americans were trying to get UK to negotiate handing the island over not trying to liberate the islanders. Special relationship? Non-existent if you ask me. America will always look after itself and ditch anyone if it suits them.

Only one NATO country has ever invoked article 5 (an attack on one is an attack on all) guess who.. it was after 9/11
I think that’s called check mate to all the NATO doubters

The President of the United States announces Montenegro likely to start World War 3

As this clip demonstrates, Montenegrins are very aggressive people:

    https://youtu.be/oot9fL4ZVuA

Trump's buddy, Putin, considers Montenegro as within Russia's sphere of influence.

Yup, re my quote above about invoking article 5, trump casting doubt on whether the US would defend another NATO member but they expected all other members to take part in defending the US and attacking Afghanistan after 9/11 which undoubtedly led to some lower profile members becoming targets for Islamic terrorists.

On the same day as a criminal complaint was unsealed against a Russian citizen accused of using the NRA as a conduit to influence U.S. political leaders on behalf of Russia, the Trump admin announced new rules that would allow the NRA to stop disclosing its donors.

    Nothing to see here.

I think the Americans provided the upgraded Sidewinder missiles for the Fleet Air Arm and also some useful electronic intelligence on troop dispositions on the Malvinas.

That is correct. The satellites were used to refuel the ships.

Meanwhile in other news, US announces special relationship. With Russia.

Given Trump's Helsinki performance (including the off the record part) and the POTUS's wish to entertain Putin in the White House, there no other conclusion available.

We shouldn't be surprised as Trump's election was founded on improving relations with that country

We just didn't realise that US relations with Europe and Canada would be the trade-off. Nor that a deal of that kind would be so acceptable in Trumpistan.

We seek an explanation that fits our world view - that Putin is blackmailing Trump, there's no other way our greatest ally would behave thus. We could be wrong - maybe Putin has nothing on Trump except an understanding that together they might create a power that is unstoppable.

So I guess the Vulcans didn't use the US air base on Ascension (and initially US fuel) to launch the attack on Stanley?

The US's diplomatic front was ostensibly neutral and trying to reach a a diplomatic agreement.

Behind the scenes they were working significantly to help us including an upgraded ECM package fitted for those later Vulcan Black Buck missions. Intel of many types etc.

Not a US air base, as such. Ascension is a British overseas territory and the base is jointly operated by the RAF and USAF - or at least it was back then..

I had thought about that, a partnership much as he does in business, although can't see what the US would gain from this situation compared to what the Russian Federation would gain? Still seems no doubt that his Trump org is in major hock to laundered Russian money and if/when Putin gives the word his oligarchs call in the debts Trump org is gone Kapputski! That's why he is taking this path.

That's the problem, we still think of the US as it was pre-Trump. Post-Trump it could be something very different.

    A nice quote from Scaramucci.

"They couldn’t care less about what happened in Russia. They love this guy, they think this guy’s for them. These are low information emotional voters and they like what they see in the president. They think he’s working for them."

Still is - I've not been through there for a few years now but that position has not changed - the base is actually called 'Royal Air Force Acension Island' and the Station Commander is a RAF Wing Commander.

Yeah, but there is a US base there so they have power. Just like NYPD has worldwide jurisdiction.
That's how it works? Right? Does in the movies.

“Nothing in that conversation suggests that he (Trump) had any knowledge of it in advance,” Mr. Giuliani said, adding that Mr. Trump had directed Mr. Cohen that if he were to make a payment related to the woman, write a check, rather than sending cash, so it could be properly documented.
