Stevo is saying that as long as it doesn't get as far as mass state sponsored murder, there's nothing to worry about.
Nope, try again. My point was that the comparison of Trump with Hitler is weak. You're neartly as bad as bianchimoon for misunderstanding my points.

So why keep banging on about state organised mass murder? It's not as if that was the only feature of note of the Third Reich.

Anyway. What do you think are the important differences between then and Trump? Why do you think we don't need to worry (aside from not being Mexican immigrants)?

I understand that the key for you is winning the argument, so you have made it as narrow as possible. You've found yourself on the "Trump's not that bad" side of this one. Make it "he's not as bad as the worst human ever", and you can take the W. You're welcome to it.

Meanwhile today, he's said he wants to get rid of the role of due process in deporting people, threatened a bigger trade war, and had a go at the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington for having filthy windows.

I made point and I stick by it as people were claiming or at least implying that he was in the same league as the Third Reich.

Do you think the comparison is a good one?

    I think he's very dangerous.

The idea that he is part of the way down the same path is bad enough. I agree that surely it won't continue the same path, but still... whether it's really bad or the worst thing ever isn't an argument I'm going to have.

    Stevo?

I think the reductive way of arguing where winning the argument is all important, and there's always a counterpoint to be made, and a side to be taken is unhelpful. It's a bit Monty Python.

hmm applies to the 'few' posters on here who can't understand why we post about Trump and his regime
I'm no Trump fan, but how many people on here genuinely think that 21st century USA is going to follow the same path as 1930's Germany?

(Don't worry, I'm going on holiday on Saturday  )

Probably not but you’d be ignorant to suggest there are not enough similarities to warrant a comparison.

What would Trump have done in Hitlers shoes? What would Hitler have done in Trumps shoes? I suspect Trump would be worse than Hitler in 1939 and Hitler better than Trump in 2018. People will of course completely fail to get the meaning of this post but I'm posting it anyway!

Just to have the list to hand, so far we have:

Calling for political opponents to be imprisoned.
    Threats to curtail press freedom.
Attacks on the legitimacy of the press.
Attacks on members of the judiciary.
Suggesting that he is above the law and can pardon himself.
Arguing that due process shouldn't apply to some people.
Excusing violence by White Supremacists and Neo-Nazis.
Claiming that his country is somehow being ripped off by... well pretty much everyone outside the US.
    Unashamed nepotism and cronyism.
The encouragement of conflict within his own cabinet.
Repeated public statements that are demonstrably and obviously not true to the point that they are a background hum.

    This list is not exhaustive.

@briantrumpet - what do you think this post is implying?
I think this implying that Trump is showing many tendencies that were seen in their worst example in Hitler. Just because Trump is probably not going to be as bad as Hitler, however, does not mean that there shouldn't be a push back against his corruption, law breaking, and authoritarianism. Are you really comfortable with children being put in cages, or the mindset that that is a valid way to solve a complex problem? Just because he is unlikely to get away with being a full-blown Hitler, you appear to be giving him a carte blanche to carry on, unless he starts gassing people. And you seem to be saying that anyone who uses historical precedent to warn of the dangers of creeping authoritarianism is hand-wringing and saying Trump is as bad as Hitler. That's willful misinterpretation.

At what point would you step in and say Trump's overstepped the mark? Or does anything go as long as he winds up hand-wringing liberals, and doesn't kill too many people in the US?

They could, but in our case they are things which have happened rather than things that the head of state has done. As said, it was Stevo that raised the direct Hitler comparison rather than a more general discussion of why those actions are not good for any democracy. I think there are similarities as there are with plenty of other authoritarian regimes, but would agree that the emotiveness of Hitler makes it difficult to have a sensible discussion.

Although I probably would have introduced a law against centre left smartarses who invoke Godwins law then claim that they didn't mean anything of the kind when challenged :)
