Anyway. What do you think are the important differences between then and Trump? Why do you think we don't need to worry (aside from not being Mexican immigrants)?1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

I understand that the key for you is winning the argument, so you have made it as narrow as possible. You've found yourself on the "Trump's not that bad" side of this one. Make it "he's not as bad as the worst human ever", and you can take the W. You're welcome to it.
Meanwhile today, he's said he wants to get rid of the role of due process in deporting people, threatened a bigger trade war, and had a go at the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington for having filthy windows.0 -

I think he's very dangerous.
The idea that he is part of the way down the same path is bad enough. I agree that surely it won't continue the same path, but still... whether it's really bad or the worst thing ever isn't an argument I'm going to have.0 -

I think the reductive way of arguing where winning the argument is all important, and there's always a counterpoint to be made, and a side to be taken is unhelpful. It's a bit Monty Python.0 -

hmm applies to the 'few' posters on here who can't understand why we post about Trump and his regime
(Don't worry, I'm going on holiday on Saturday )
Probably not but you’d be ignorant to suggest there are not enough similarities to warrant a comparison.
What would Trump have done in Hitlers shoes? What would Hitler have done in Trumps shoes? I suspect Trump would be worse than Hitler in 1939 and Hitler better than Trump in 2018. People will of course completely fail to get the meaning of this post but I'm posting it anyway!"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." I in no way say there that the USA will perpetrate institutional mass murder. Happy to help.0 -
Just to have the list to hand, so far we have:
Calling for political opponents to be imprisoned.
Threats to curtail press freedom.
Attacks on the legitimacy of the press.
Attacks on members of the judiciary.
Suggesting that he is above the law and can pardon himself.
Arguing that due process shouldn't apply to some people.
Excusing violence by White Supremacists and Neo-Nazis.
Claiming that his country is somehow being ripped off by... well pretty much everyone outside the US.
Unashamed nepotism and cronyism.
The encouragement of conflict within his own cabinet.
Repeated public statements that are demonstrably and obviously not true to the point that they are a background hum.
This list is not exhaustive.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

At what point would you step in and say Trump's overstepped the mark? Or does anything go as long as he winds up hand-wringing liberals, and doesn't kill too many people in the US?0 -

Well as a benchmarking tool numbers 4, 8, 9, 10, and 11 could all be referring to the UK
I really think that comparisons with Hitler are unhelpful to the argument against him0 -

They could, but in our case they are things which have happened rather than things that the head of state has done. As said, it was Stevo that raised the direct Hitler comparison rather than a more general discussion of why those actions are not good for any democracy. I think there are similarities as there are with plenty of other authoritarian regimes, but would agree that the emotiveness of Hitler makes it difficult to have a sensible discussion.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah!
