We also couldn't get the period humour but enjoyed the film nonetheless.0 -

Brilliant observed performances by Coogan and Reilly but the film itself I found a bit meh.0 -
Watched the Netflix film 'Bird Box' starring Sandra Bullock, wasn't expecting much from the reviews but actually really enjoyed it, tense all the way through but definitely worth a watch.0

Ghost Stories (Netflix)
Andy Nyman plays a psychic investigator tasked with finding the truth behind three ghost stories. Also stars Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse.
Its a feature length 'Inside Number 9' but on steroids. Mrs Goo watched much of it face hidden behind hands, peeking through fingers, and still a bit disturbed 24hrs later.
Quite a sinister, gripping, dark film with a big twist.
Enjoy.Always be yourself, unless you can be Aaron Rodgers....Then always be Aaron Rodgers.0 -

Agreed, good review too.Superstition sets the whole world in flames; philosophy quenches them.

You Were Never Really Here.
Basically Taken done in an art house style.
A pretty difficult watch, both for the brutal content and the minimalist style. Very little by way of dialogue or exposition. Great performance by Joaquin Phoenix.0 -
Life Itself - Sky movies - really good film, very thought provoking
Stan & Ollie - Interesting - but it focuses on the twilight of there careers and always seemed like it could never make up its what it was trying to get across - The 2 wives seemed like total pyscho's, without any explanation of why. Steve Coogan was great as stan laurel though.0 -
Silence of the Lambs.
Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Fossshhhter.
Forgot how good this was. Still just as gripping and edgy as the day it was released.
Note. I used to work with an Anthony Hopkins double at the Bournemouth Echo. When the book got reprinted after the films release he coined it by attending promotions at book shops. He went in full Lechter kit (face mask, jump suit and straight jacket) and was wheeled into the shops on a sack track.Always be yourself, unless you can be Aaron Rodgers....Then always be Aaron Rodgers.0 -

Once again, agreed. Casey Affleck got a bit of bad press recently, no idea if justified, but I rate him highly.Superstition sets the whole world in flames; philosophy quenches them.

One more thumbs up for Manchester by the Sea, great film
This morning took the little lady to our local Odeon to see The Nutcracker and The Four Realms
It's sort of OK, but I only paid £2.50 per seat and I think that's about what it's worth, but the little lady enjoyed it and that's the important thing.0 -
Vice. I'd recommend it. Not sure if it's a great film, but definitely worth watching. Maybe it's just because it's the first non-children's film I have seen at the cinema in aeons...0

Same with Lord of the rings, tried but 15 mins in switched off.
This is why I rarely go to the flicks other than with the kids.I know I'd end up walking out if I wasn't enjoying it.
Batman(1989) was the last film I saw at the Cinema without the kids0 -

I just know after a few mins if a film is worth sitting through.I forced myself to sit through the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as everyone seemed to rate it and wish I hadn't so generally I turn off or go on my laptop if the missus wants to carry on watching.0 -

You'd walk out of 'The Drop' (Tom Hardy), betcha life..0 -
Vice. Very good, not quite the comedy balance the trailer suggests. How much is fact up for debate. But, if it's only somewhat true then a sobering reminder of how we got here. And while I'd give it one star more than the Guardian, I'd say this is spot on:
"A more serious complaint is an initially glib, sarcastic spin on the story that is at odds with an ending that loosely ties Cheney’s tenure to pretty much everything that’s currently wrong with the world. A final barrage of images of environmental catastrophe, migrant tragedy, civil unrest and more sends the film swerving into a much darker place. It’s almost as if McKay talked himself into a 180-degree pivot, and finally realised that Dick Cheney is no laughing matter after all.My blog: http://www.roubaixcycling.cc (kit reviews and other musings)

I have to agree about Affleck, a compelling and accomplished actor who blew his peers away in Out of the Furnance.“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring”

simply brilliant. Totally draw dropping photography and story.“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring”

1. Polar (Netflix original )
Mads Mikkelsen (Le Chifre in Casino Royale)
Pulp Fiction meets Little Britain meets Suicide Squad.
How bout that for a mix?
Mads the hitman wants to retire for the quiet life at his cabin in the mountains. Matt Lucas his boss doesn't want to cough up the cash for the promised pension plan. So he sends in a squad of young hit people to knock him off.
Not great but entertaining enough for a Saturday night movie that requires little concentration.
Bit of a twist at the end but it was a bit telegraphed in hindsight.
2. IO Last on Earth (Netflix original )
Post apocalyptic genre film. Only 3 cast members and one of those was fleeting.
Young female scientific researcher lives at observatory trying to find a way for life to adapt to the poison atmosphere of earth. Oh by the way nearly everyone else is dead or living in a spacestation orbiting IO.
In drops Anthony Mackie (Falcon from Avengers) by balloon. Short relationship builds up. He leaves, she stays. End. Not very good.Always be yourself, unless you can be Aaron Rodgers....Then always be Aaron Rodgers.0 -

Mary queen of scots
Boring, overly long, difficult to follow, and they need to increase the budget for the false beards - jesus it looked they had popped to wilko's and brought half a dozen wallpaper brushes.
If youre really into history - it might be you're thing - but for light entertainment close to zero...0 -

Yeah, if Shakespeare had got his hands on it, it'd have been a cracker. And he might have ended his days in the Bloody Tower.0 -
Green Book. (A racist Italian bouncer is hired to be the driver/minder for a black pianist on his tour of southern USA for 8 weeks. Set in the 50's*, based upon a true story.)
Great performances from all concerned and done well. There's a nice development of the relationship between the two characters, and how they learn from each other. If I have to say anything against it, I thought it might have been a bit sanitised. I imagine that it would be more difficult than they portrayed.
EDIT . *Early 60's according to IMDB. I don't know where I got 50's from, must have been something they said in the film.
The older I get, the better I was.0 -
Battle for Sevastopol.... Russian with English subtitles
Wet afternoon, felt lazy Amazon Prime saw this film, half heartily thought lets have a look.
After 5 minutes hooked.
It is about Lyudmila, she is a sniper, but the film is not a gung-ho American style war film, much more than that.
I was very worried what was going to happen to her............ Films don't usually touch me like that.0
