    Requiem For A Dream

There are a few films I wish I had not watched and this is the latest. It's not that it is a bad film but make no mistake this is no comedy. I remember watching 1984, through all the grim horror without being too bothered because I was expecting the protagonist to be triumphant but the catch was at the end where the protagonist did not beat the system and escape he failed and was just reintroduced. A comedy has a happy ending.
You can watch a tragedy unfold and be taken to the bottom of despair but as long as there is a happy ending you go away invigorated and even laugh at the temporary horrors you watched.

But if the story has no happy ending then you are left in that terrible state.

I’d give The Road a miss then if I were you!

Fantastic Beasts :Crimes of Grindlewald. Took Tashboy along last Friday as he had an inset day. I've read the Potter books and watched a couple of the films. This was passable and effects laden as expected. Johnny Depp playing Johnny Depp and I could see how they were placing some of the foundations for the later Potter stories, although if you had no knowledge of the franchise I can imagine some of the bits might have been confusing.

Fantastic beasts - predictable but watchable.

A star is born - much better than I expected - well produced and some good acting.

    Capote (2005)- Netfilx
The late Philip Seymour-Hoffman is quite exceptional in this. Little wonder he got an Oscar for his performance.
I read 'In Cold Blood' in the summer and found it a rather hard read although quite compelling in its portrayal of a small town in the American Midwest that is rocked by the brutal murder of a family of 4.
The film tends to leave out lots of the detail of the book and rightly concentrates it's attention on Truman Capote and his pursuit of a story ably assisted by his friend Harper Lee (To Kill a Mocking Bird).
He befriends and sort of manipulates one of the murderers Perry Smith, accurately portrayed by Clifton Collins Jr.

If the portrayal and story telling of Capote is accurate it proves how mercenary and manipulative he was.
Always be yourself, unless you can be Aaron Rodgers....Then always be Aaron Rodgers.
  • The Possession of Hannah Rose - these three critic review snapshots sum the whole film up...

"Hannah Grace never overcomes the compendium of clichés in Brian Sieve's screenplay, which resembles a greatest hits of demonic possession films."
"She's possessed, although she's lifeless. Sort of like the movie."
"Hannah Graceis barely 85 minutes, with an ending so abrupt that you'll wonder whether you've missed something. (Spoiler alert: you haven't.)"

A shame as it had so much potential - all of it sadly unfulfilled!

    Bohemian Rhapsody

I approached this film with a certain amount of nervousness, Queen, particularly their early material, have played a large and important part in my life (Their song Brighton Rock is entirely responsible for me learning to play guitar!)

I needn’t have worried, I’m not saying it’s without faults, facts and timelines are compressed and moved around to fit the narrative (but remember this is a film not a documentary!)

The performances are first class with Remi Malek as Freddie getting all his ticks and mannerisms spot on, and whilst not going into graphic detail Freddie’s sexuality and proclivities were not airbrushed out as was intimated in the build up to the release.

Also, as someone who attended Live Aid, the final scene of the concert gave me goosebumps, all in all if you are going to see this film it’s definitely one for the big screen, and I’m giving some serious consideration to seeing it again in IMAX.

Watched that myself on Wednesday night. The last scene at Wembley was superb, the way they mixed the concert footage into the film was well done. I jumped on Youtube and watched the Queen set and spotted things I saw in the film that I hadn't spotted before. Shivers down my spine when Freddy played the first few notes on the piano.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I fell asleep for a large part of this, probably tells you all you need to know!
  • Get Carter made in 1971( Amazon Prime).
Enjoyed it, could not get over the amount of smoking that took place on screen.
No mobile phones I'm old enough to remember being on the payphone in the pub, pumping threepence pieces into it whilst holding the phone and a finger in the other ear to drown out the noise from the bar.
Pleasant trip down memory lane and not that bad a film.

I flew to New York on Monday and binge-watched three films to stay awake:

Bladerunner 2049 - I reviewed this a while back when it was released and seemed to be the only one who was underwhelmed by it. On second viewing, even constrained by the fact it was an in-flight viewing experience, I have to say I get it now. I'll have to watch it again with a big screen and decent sound.

Baby Driver - enjoyed this. The end is a bit Hollywood saccharine but it was a decent way of passing the time to get to that point.

Deadpool - I'm not sure how I got this far without having seen it before, but I really liked this and was chuckling out loud at several points. I'm flying home tonight and am torn between getting some sleep and watching Deadpool 2.

Worth watching the Deminer - it’s on iPlayer as “hurt locker hero” - crap title but good film.

Basically 90mins of watching real life footage of iraq’s most prolific mine defuser. As tense as you would think demining is.

Mortal Engines - I think this will be a very marmite film.

But I thought it was great - good effects and acting - easy to follow but engaging plot - final showdown could have been lifted from dozens of other films - highly recommended 8/10

Flew home. Didn’t watch Deadpool 2, was seduced instead by Natalie Portman and watched Annihilation. The only good thing about it is having Natalie Portman in it. Vague plot about some pseudo-scientific phenomenon which is never really addressed fully, acted out by a bunch of characters with no real substance to an outcome that isn’t really. Managed to get to sleep just fine after though.

"The Big Short" on BBC2 a couple of days ago. I thought it was really good and captured the clever/lucky contact/research crunchers who saw the patterns and had the balls to go against the blind faith flow.

    Bird Box (Netflix original )
Had read the pretty good reviews of this so we gave it a go last night.
Im not her biggest fan but Sandra Bullock is very good, nee very convincing in this kind of reworked version of The Happening. I guess when there is no Hollywood blockbuster budget then acting skills take over. She seems to have gotten better with age.
John Malkovic is John Malkovic and plays his part brilliantly, along with the rest of the cast.
It delivers pretty well in the shock and gripping departments.
Definitely not a cheerful Christmas movie and not for young teens due to scenes at beginning which are quite graphic and disturbing.
7 out of 10 from me.

    Three Billboards.

    Absorbing, superb script and ensemble.

Although the best film for the year for me was a surprise find on Netflix called Journeys End.

This film is based on 7 day period in the trenches of the First World War while the cast wait for the anticipated German counter offensive. A claustrophobic story of hope and hopelessness, hurmour, compassion and brutality intertwined with people just trying to work through the situation while heading to oblivion.
