    Peter Rabbit

Went with the little lady to watch, wasn’t expecting anything at all and it failed even to live up to those low expectations!

It was clearly going for the ‘Paddington’ audience but had none of the quality control that made that film so great.

Still, the little lady loved it so what do I know?

I did not think, in this day and age, I would see special effects that I could count as jaw dropping, but Valerian did that for me - more so than Ready player one. Totally empty film otherwise with cliché jokes and 'tough as nails' protagonist who looks 13. Worst offender, though, was woeful combat choreography.

I love this film and I love this scene, one of the few occasions when I’ve come close to wetting myself from laughing so much!

Ralph Fiennes usually irritates me but he was brilliant in this film, Brendan Gleason is brilliant just by being Brendan Gleason and even Colin Farrell was superb, I’m going to have to watch it again tonight.

Similar to Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast. He said the script for that film was like poetry - you couldn't change a word without ruining it. "In Bruges" is like that.

There is something about a good British Gangster film that the American genre doesn't have -I think Goodfella's is the closest, but can't exactly say why.

    Joe Pesci.

I am not sure. You have no chance.

Roman J. Israel, Esq. - Not incredible but more satisfying to watch than most films I've seen lately. I thought Denzel Washington was really good in it.

    The Incredibles

As the sequel is due at the cinema soon and as the little lady wasn’t even born when it came out I thought it would be good idea to get her to see it

I have to say that it’s even better than I remember and the little lady loved it too and now can’t wait for the sequel.

Zodiac ~ Absolutely incredible film and I can't believe I hadn't seen it earlier, brilliant thriller and plenty of plot twists to keep you guessing, based on a true story too which always makes it more appealing. Highly recommend if you like your dark thrillers, great cast too.

Death of Stalin - Directed by Armando Ianucci - excellent cast and Jason Isaacs steals the show. Amazing that they can do such a good comedy about such dark subject matter. Well worth a watch.

    Oceans 8

A proper leave your brain at the door heist movie

In fact it was pretty much exactly the same plot as Oceans 11, I enjoyed that one and I enjoyed this as well.

    Hotel Transylvania 3

I haven’t seen this personally but I’ve just received this text message from my wife who took the little lady to see it.

    “F*cking hell!!

You dodged a bullet not going to see this “

I’m guessing that it’s pretty poor from that.

    Cockneys vs zombies

Having watched most of Rodriguez and Tarantino's offerings, i thought i was a fan of hilarious B movies, but, apparently, that is not the case. That, or this is a C movie.

I thought Michelle Ryan was watchable.

Have you seen Dead Snow? that made me laugh.

I do love a good zombie film but the trouble is that they are very few and far between (ditto a good zombie TV series nowadays which is another debate!) but, if you want to take your brain out for a couple of hours, I would recommend Zombieland. I had not seen it fo a long time but caught the last half on a channel surf a while ago and it still made me laugh in places.

  • Infinity war - loved it again but not sure it hooked me like Guardians did. Spiderman is easily the best avenger in it now.

A few days ago - Batman vs Spiderman: Dawn of Justice. A thinly veiled excuse to pitch two childhood favourites against each other, with random reasons and inexplicable happenings along the way. Luckily it was 'free' with my Amazon Prime account.

Just the other night - Twelve Monkeys. Not only had I not seen this before, I'm not sure I even knew about its existence. I nearly switched it off when I saw it was a Terry Gilliam film (I'm not sure I 'get' his stuff) but the arrival of a couple of big names (Willis, Pitt) kept my interest and it was worth the wait. Quirky, compelling, needed a bit of thought to follow. A decent way to round off the evening, and on BBC4 too, so ad-free.

    I'd give it 5/7.

I'm pretty sure you meant BATMAN V SUPERMAN.
Not the best superhero film as I tend to find that DC films have a near absence of humour and the action sequences nearly always happen at night. Doesn't make for enjoyable viewing.

You’re right, of course. I’m not really into the whole DC/Marvel thing. Does it show?

Documentary about Amy Winehouse, still left with that feeling of a terrible waste of great talent, and her dad comes out very very badly!

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Interesting ideas, lots of special effects, but a storyline and acting that are well below par.

Surprised to find after watching that is a Luc besson film, very disappointed.

I watched Pacific Rim 2 or what's it called. Had to laugh at outrage and indignation of reviews 'not a patch on first film'. It is clear that with change of director, the target audience was different. While first film was clearly meant for neckbeard geeks, weabos and Kaiju fans, the second one was a generic production for teenagers with appropriate plot, wit and banter. And both films did their jobs pretty well, imo.

    Trainspotting 2... meh

I know it could never have the same impact as the original, but sheesh that felt like a film just going through the motions for everyone to collect a fat paycheck

Really enjoyed it, despite the same formula as all Alien films (see Ebert review)

  • Split - Didn't expect much from M Night Shyamalan but the first film I've watched at home in a long while that didn't get paused for some distraction. "Edge of the seat" is the term I believe.

Justice League - I have defended Batman versus Superman and Suicide Squad to my friends despite the fact that the films only really work when you watch the extended cuts. Wonder Woman was OK (I was 6hours into a 10 hour flight when I got to see it) but JL was a steaming heap. Incomprehensible storyline, no chemistry between the cast and some of the most confusing action sequences every CGI'd. Time for DC to hang up their movie making cape? DC had the chance to build on the popularity and style of the Nolan Batmans as a counter to Marvel's cartoonier approach. I am now OK to admit they failed to build a decent extended universe.
