  • introduced bambino to Back to the Future last night..

    Forgotten how good it was.

That is parenting done well! My little one is due soon and I'm not sure I could cope with the Disney on loop approach my brother has taken with films and his kids.

    The Darkest Minds

The little lady absolutely loves Stranger Things and so was keen to see this film made by the same people who made ST.

Basically it’s another children in a dystopian future* film

She enjoyed it but I thought it was all very ho-hum!

    * Is there any future in children’s films that isn’t dystopian?

They're not doing too well in the Alienist (late 19th century New York).

    Trainspotting 2... meh

I know it could never have the same impact as the original, but sheesh that felt like a film just going through the motions for everyone to collect a fat paycheck

Really. I loved it. Maybe being from Edinburgh helps but it was everything I hoped for.

    Jurassic World

What a enormous steaming turd of a movie

But still, Bryce Dallas Howard looked as sexy as feck in it!

    Mission Impossible : Fallout

The series just gets better and better and, as a massive Bond fan, only Casino Royale really edges this.

Tom Cruise really can't be divorced from Ethan Hunt, being part of the charm. The man is certifiably insane.

  • Blues Brothers 1980.......... I'd never seen through the years Loved it Loved it.
Smile on my face all the way through, can't stand interminable car chases but didn't mind these at all, done with humour.
    All very tongue in cheek.
Mustn't forget some great music from some great musicians.

Indeed! It's a classic. I wouldn't bother with the sequel though.

"In the heart of the sea"

In part, a true story about a whale attacking a whaling ship in 1820, sinking it. The film is told from the perspective of one of the survivors many years after, telling the story to Herman Melville who was then inspired to write it as "Moby Dick".

    Gorky Park .1988. (Netflix )
Murder mystery set in 70s or 80s Soviet Union, can't remember which decade. I enjoyed reading the book a few months ago, although it was cumbersome at times. Follows the police investigation of a triple murder which implicates Soviet officials and an American businessman.
I think the film certainly evokes an atmosphere of how damned miserable life was for ordinary citizens in Soviet Russia. Acting and script not the greatest and definitely not the best book to film I've seen, but passable.
A good film to watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon, which I did.

    Shockingly, shockingly awful

I may see a worse film this year but somehow I doubt it.

Deadpool 2. As well written and acted as the first one, but it just does not have the same effect once you know what you can expect.

Josh Brolin is one cool actor, by the way. It was impressive to see him in the MiB3, too

    The Equalizer.
Perfectly watchable. With the exception that it could have been better at 20 minutes shorter.

  • Calibre. I was flicking through netflix and came across this film. I'm glad i did. A very low budget thriller, no famous actors or director. Wasn't expecting much but WOW! Two mates go hunting in the Scottish Highlands. A tragic accident occurs and then it's just tension all the way, well worth a watch.

Jack Reacher Never Go Back - Netflix
The diminutive Tom Cruise steps out once again to play the 6ft/6in giant ex military policeman.
Pretty true to the book. Cliché, gripping in places, cliché, some good stunts, cliché, corruption, cliché, henchman baddie determined to kill Reacher, cliché.
Not bad but not great. Not a cerebral challenge, which is the norm for Cruise films.

    King Of Thieves

The story of the Hatton Gardens robbery featuring an absolutely stellar cast it’s somehow still a bit nothingey!!

However it was great to see Jim Broadbent playing a really nasty piece of work, he’s very good at it!

"I don't feel at home in the world anymore"

In our usual indecisiveness in flicking through Netflix for something to watch, Mrs L suggested selcting a film at random without having heard of it or reading any of the precis describing the film.

Part (dark) comedy, part thriller - loved it!

  • 'The Lives of Others'

cold war drama........excellent depiction of East German Stassi (police) paranoia.

Bet 2 hours you'll spend other than ricin g a bike!
  • "Naked among wolves". One of the many many holocaust movies. This one is about the true story of a young boy smuggled into a work camp and the struggle the prisoners have of keeping him out of harms reach of the SS. Very very good, certainly up there with schindlers list and the pianist in my view, both of which won shed loads of awards. Only problem is it is subtitled so it may not be for everyone.
  • Solo. Don't know what the negative fuss was about. Lead was perfectly fine in the role, good action heist movie that hit most of the right buttons. Contrived? Well, yeah, that's pretty much always going to be the case.

Tonight I went to see Winter Ridge which was shot in my home villages of Lynton & Lynmouth, renamed Blackrock for the film.

A low budget British 'thriller' shot in a stunning location, I really wanted to like this film.

However, the acting is very, very bad, the storyline is poor and predictable, and there's a ridiculous final scene.

My only interest in the film was the local landmarks, if I didn't live here I would have left before the end.

It's not a long film, but I felt myself nodding off, had I been on the sofa I would have for sure - this films only redeeming feature is Joao da Silva's cinematography.

I saw it in Lynton's lovely cinema (the smallest in the UK I think), I think it says something that they couldn't fill all 68 seats for a one off showing (41 turned up). It's back in two weeks for a longer run.

The director was present, I didn't stay for the Q & A session, which I kind of regret as I could have asked why on earth it is called Winter Ridge.

"Hold the night". I picked this from netflix, i'd never heard of it, or the actors/director so I gave it a whirl thinking it might surprise me. It's set in alaska. Wolves take a young boy so the mother writes to a wolf expert to come and help her track down the pack.

It's not a bad film but its ending has you asking a lot of questions. There's just something not right between the relationship of the mother and father of the taken boy. I found out exactly what was going on AFTER the film had finished when I read an interview where the director explained everything. He said ( and there were) several clues scattered throughout the film but I missed them all!!! In fairness to me I challenge anybody to watch this film and see if you can work it out from the "clues" the director puts in. I'm betting that you wont and like me when it ends the way it does you'll just want to know what the hell was going on.

You might want to watch this with your coat on. It's shiveringly dark and bleak which all adds to the tension.
