    The Departed (2006)
Very entertaining film, lots of swearing and gore though.
Strong cast, after about 5 mins you kind of know it is going to be a good film.
Started to watch Black Panther but lost interest fairly rapidly!

If you take out the romantic interest, it's almost an exact shot for shot remake of the chinese film "infernal affairs".

I don't know how true this is, basically I kind of remember a quote by some author............. "There are only 5 stories in the world". The implication being only 5 main themes I guess. Doubts are creeping into my mind as I am writing this may have been 7. Has anybody else heard this............. I'm not sure if I believe it, feels like it could be true.
The Departed may not be shot for shot but it is definitely a western remake, and sticks to the plot line.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Cocktail - cheesy as hell, but what a soundtrack. And Elizabeth Shue!

As cheesy as a cheesy thing on top of a cheese mountain (but Elizabeth Shue continued looking hot all the way up to her days in CSI).

My last film watched was the BR of Murder On The Orient Express which I thought was just terrific entertainment all the way through (even though I knew whodunnit in advance!). Also, the Kenneth Brannagh / Hercule Poirot moustache should have won the Oscar for 'Best Moustache That Can Be Seen From Space'. I'm now looking forward to his remake of Death On The Nile but I guess that will not be around for a couple of years.

Death of Stalin - I knew nothing about it as I am ashamedly ignorant of history but it was hilarious albeit terrifying in equal measure.
Hitman's BodyGuard - Nonsense with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson (who I really like). Make me laugh.
Shape of Water - Not really sure how I felt about this. Quite a moving sci-fi love story but felt a bit rushed at times.

  • Earth to Echo.

A kids' film - basically, a remake of ET but with more mobile phones. I watched it with my sons and it was such a lovely change from that animated, Pixar stuff which gets really, really tedious once you have watched a couple. My kids thought Earth to Echo was fantastic - I've rarely seen them so engrossed.
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.

"Hacksaw ridge", one of the best films i've ever seen. "Mother", possibly the weirdest film i've ever seen and "shape of water", over hyped or what.

Watched A Ghost Story last week - the one that features a main character wearing a bedsheet over his head with two cutouts for eyeholes to see out of.

It is quite superb. Reviews are varied and famously there's a 5 minute scene that involves a grieving woman eating a complete pie, but since I watched this on Thursday - 4 days ago - I can't get it out of my mind. It's brilliant, it's slow, it's shot in a weird home move aspect ration that you don't notice after about 5 minutes, and you find yourself fascinated with how the ghost costume manages to look like that and how it reflects so much of what its occupant is going through. And you wonder about time and loneliness long after it's finished.

Awesome; it just sticks in your head.

Caught the last half of Young Frankenstein with Marty Feldman and Gene Wilder the other week. If you like Monty Python etc, this is laugh out loud nonsense. How they got away with the scene involving the woman having sex with the monster is beyond me, even in the 70’s. It’s no wonder a lot of old films don’t get shown any more. (I’ll watch for this coming back on though).

Well Jackie Brown and The Firm have the same plot - small guy/gal caught between the Fed's and the Mob has to play off both sides and walk away intact. The same plot principle also applies to The Gruffalo.

    And of course
    Harry+Dumbledore = Frodo+Gandalf = Luke+Obi Wan
    Weasley Twins = Merry + Pippin = R2D2+C3PO
These are examples of "The Quest" plot where self discovery/coming of age is actually the main point rather than the thing or place sought for.

    And I forgot
Seven Samurai, Magificent Seven and A Bugs Life use the same plot, but variations include any ensemble cast from The Dirty Dozen to The Avengers via The Blues Brothers.

Not sure if this one has been mentioned already but we watched 'Mindhorn' on BluRay over the weekend. A typical modern "British Comedy' with a great cast which all in all kept us smiling for it's whole running time of about 90 minutes (any more and it might have felt a bit long). If you saw and enjoyed Steve Coogan's 'Alpha Papa', you will probably like this one as well - it was never going to win any Oscars but, hey, sometimes it's just nice to be entertained without having to think about it too deeply.

The Black Panther. Don't get all that comic stuff, but entertaining enough.

<<social comment alert>> asked the kids after if anything struck them about the film. Blank looks. Which I think is really positive, surely?

It's just a hill. Get over it.

    Thor Ragnarok
Last solo outing for Chris Hemsworth as the hammer wielding (or not) god of thunder, before the curtain closes on this part of the MCU with 2 Infinity War movies.
It has a different feel from the previous Thor films which I actually thought made the adventure more enjoyable. A lot more humour in the script and the cinematography was much improved.
None of the Marvel films will win an Oscar or Bafta for acting etc, but they're the movies I wanted to see as a kid who read Spiderman and Ironman. So they're OK by me.

Following on from earlier comments last night I watched Young Frankenstein for the first time in years, still as brilliantly funny as I remembered it being!!

Decided to follow it up with another Mel Brookes classic, Blazing Saddles, and yet again I damn near wet myself watching it, it still is the funniest film ever made!!!*

    Spiderman Homecoming
The 2nd reboot of this franchise and thank goodness didn't have to go through the whole thing from the very beginning. Starts off with a very brief recap of Avengers films and then kicks on quite nicely. Michael Keaton as the baddie (I thought he was a goodie...Batman). And ends with it queuing in nicely for Infinity Wars and the next Spidey solo outing with Scorpion.

The little lady wanted to watch ‘Independence Day’ for whatever reason someone would want to watch it

She really really enjoyed it, I still think it’s the same humongous parcel of shite that I did all those years ago!

Watched over the weekend. Totally engrossing film based on events that I was previously unaware of. The key act is horrifying - rarely have I felt so on edge during a movie. I remember one of the critics, maybe Kermode, said he was surprised Detroit didn't receive any Oscar nominations and I completely agree. Probably the best 2017 film I have seen, certainly up there with 3 Billboards.

Also watched 'You were never really here' at the cinema. It's a really well made film but I expect it will frustrate a lot of people. Left me fairly baffled and wanting to watch it again to see if I can work out what is going on.

Need a good comedy after those two...

Wild Wild Country (on Netflix, technically not a film but it's still an interesting and thought provoking documentary worthy of a mention) - How to sell "spiritualism" to the gullible and make an obscene amount of money out of it. When I say obscene I mean 93 Rolls Royces, million dollar diamond watches and your own city including airport and fleet of aircraft.
Then the documentary goes absolutely bonkers as the cult commits every crime under the sun. From taking over a small town to busing 3000 homeless people in, to commit electoral fraud, then try to get rid of them afterwards.
You couldn't make this story up. I'm surprised I never knew these events occurred until I watched it.

    Here is a spoiler, but its a good read .... https://thewire.in/books/rajneesh-the-g ... lls-royces

    Avengers - Infinity War
Where to start.... 2 hours 40 minutes of pure adventure, comic moments, darkness, fighting, unlikely partnerships, unexpected deaths, new gadgets, new hair styles, dodgy sunglasses etc, etc. The film did not labour in melding together the Avengers, Guardians and others into various scenes and the ultimate plot to defeat Thanos' attempts to gather the infinity stones.
Totally worthy of the plaudits its receiving as the best MCU film to date.
If you do go. Don't forget to wait till the credits have finished for the teaser trailer.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Watched it on Kodi at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. There's quite a bit of humour/comedy in it too which made it all the more enjoyable.

Next to see is Guardians of the galaxy (1) I know, I know arse about face and should have watched the first one first but anywho...

    ..

    Remember that, Wish this was a review I'd written;
All the usual quality and finesse of a Kathryn Bigelow movie BUT due to its historical accuracy the viewer is denied the pleasure of seeing the main villains (CPD, defense attorney and all-white jury) having their entrails removed through their eye-sockets. Difficult to watch but ultimately unmissable!
Could we maybe have a second edit, where they all get what they deserve? I'd buy it.

    So would I.

The grand emperor of all 1970's disaster movies and I doubt they could have fitted in mores stars in the cast if they tried. I can remember going to see it at the London premier in the Odeon Leicester Square with my mum (she got tickets through a friend in theatreland) and being totally knocked out. If they remade it today, it would probably be wrecked by GGI and it definitely wouldn't be able to star the coolest man ever to walk the silver screen, Steve McQueen.

As to my last film, I got home late one night last week, turned the TV on and channelled surfed until I stumbled across the last hour or so of Dog Soldiers - brilliant (but don't think too deeply!).
