The Foreigner....new Jackie Chan film which I thought was going to be terrible, actually really good, not just good action but also plenty of plot twists and surprises that never fails to keep your attention. Worth a watch.

Also watched 'Stronger' this weekend, film about a victim of the Boston Marathon bombing and how he copes with life and the media afterwards, very good and very moving film. Don't watch with your girlfriends Christian family....few awkward sex scenes!

Watched Captain Phillips again last night as it was on when I got home from work and whilst the opening credits were rolling I was on Amazon buying his book of the hijacking.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

So, The Last Jedi - not much to add to the above really. Every major scene was basically a copy of something from the original three. Crait = Hoth right (just salt plains rather than snow). And the "First Order" are clearly not the Empire too, they just use all of the same equipment & uniforms (clearly they use the same arms dealer - I think that's what they were trying to fob off on us anyway....). Rogue One was way better.

Also watched Everest last night - was curious having read John Krakauer's book (Into Thin Air) a while back - I'm still not sure whose account of the event is entirely trustworthy. It was OK & obviously dramatised the disaster a bit, doing it's best not to point fingers at individuals but rather to let you decide yourself which decisions (big or small) might have ended up being misguided, but making painfully obvious that Everest Summit Tourism (whilst inevitable) isn't really a wise thing. There's a conflict between the fact that it can be done and people can push their limits to achieve something truly remarkable vs the fact that if you're not an experienced mountain climber, you probably have no place being there because you're putting yourself and others in mortal danger. It didn't linger on epic Himalayan vistas much (might've been amazing in an IMAX) but was fairly watchable despite being based on an awful tragedy. Didn't really do much for the Sherpas either - you'd have thought they were never there & those that were a sloppy bunch.

Logan - I am a fan of the Marvel cinematic universes but the Xmen series is not my favourite and this final Wolverine film underscores why. Can't really explain why other than it was too long and drawn out for an all too obvious conclusion. It also didn't help that prior to viewing I'd watched a couple of episodes of Extras. Stephen Merchant plays a reasonably big part in Logan as a mutant. You can still hear the Bristolian accent and I was waiting for him to make a PC gaff.

    Fahrenheit 9/11
Michael Moore documentary on the lead up to 9/11 and the subsequent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. As per usual from Moore, a well crafted story with interviews and news footage. The only criticism I have is that it is very US orientated and could have touched on Tony Blair's involvement with George W Bush. Having said all that a film that will get your heckles up all the same and really question the standing in the world that ordinary working class people have compared to the 'elite' in business and government (which are one and the same).

Agreed, the Foreigner was very good.
Watched a film called In Bruges on Netflix last night. I enjoyed it a lot, may not be to everyone's taste though. A black comedy and quite surreal at times.

I too thought the Foreigner was a good film. Kept me entertained throughout. Pretty good acting from Mr Chan.
Was Pierce Brosnan supposed to be Gerry Adams?

  • Logan Lucky – Steven Soderbergh comes out of film directing retirement and absolutely smashes it. Written by Rebecca Blunt who doesn’t exists (nobody knows who wrote it but my money is on Soderbergh). The soundtrack is by David Holmes as per the Oceans films, however the original tracks are the winners. If you want a fun heist movie that’s full of brilliant acting this is well worth a watch. IMO it beats the Oceans films because it’s so simple.

Well you guys were right about The Foreigner. Really good watch that one. Gerry Adams indeed.

In Bruges is quirkily excellent and as always Brendan Gleeson is on great form.

Enjoyed the Foreigner and yes Brosnan seemed to do a perfect Gerry Adams. Never cross Jackie Chan.
Saw 'The Greatest Showman' this week- a bit like Moulin Rouge -lite. Very razzamatazzy and a nice feelgood movie. Passed a couple of hours nicely.
Saw 'Free Fire' with Cillian Murphy and Michael Smiley over Christmas. Another IRA linked movie. I enjoyed it but had to take a break half way through from all the shooting. My wife didn't bother with the second half.

Despicable Me 3. Just watched with a poorly daughter snuggled up on the sofa. Not as good as previous but the series sets a high standard. What pleased me was the end credits sequence was a homage to the Spy vs. Spy comic strip from Mad magazine.

're Star Wars 8. Han Solo is sorely missed. His chemistry with the new kids in 7 was the most engaging element of the story.

In Bruges is wonderfully black, and hits a whole new level when we finally get to see Harry on screen. One where obscenity is crafted to the most funny effect, rather than relying on swearing being funny in itself, if you get what I mean.

Now take back what you said about my ***** kids.

White Tiger, a Russian film from MosFilm about... well... war.

The main character is played by Frank Skinner or his Slavic cousin.

Very typical of recent Russian (MosFilm) films about the war of 41-45.

Sparse dialogue, patriotic stocicsm, big scenery, lingering shots on interesting faces, nice pace. The final scene of the conversation by a log fire is surreal but haunting. As is the scene before it where the protagonist is getting ready for the next time. Very Russian. Worth looking out.

Similarly, Road to Moscow and Star, two good films covering similar topics from the same - deeply Russian and deeply patriotic - studio.

The young reconnaissance officer in Star is played by Steven Gerrard, the former footballer, who speaks pretty good Russian.

    Three Billboards...
Excellent film and some great acting but with a couple of odd casting choices. Worth watching.

A good film, worth watching with some superb scenes.
Those supreme scenes are better than the whole IMO though.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

    Good film, but not great

Christopher Plummer is extraordinarily good considering.

Watched it last night. Excellent film. Fabulous acting from all, especially Ian McKellen and the young boy who plays the housekeepers son. Possibly McKellen''s best role.

3 billboards is an odd one.

Felt like a better film watching it than in hindsight.

Were a few character and plot deviations that didn’t really add much. *spoiler* what was the point of the new police boss turning up & sacking Dickson; if that doesn’t happen the rest of the plot and/or character development is largely the same. */spoiler* for example.

It could have been tighter and more closely looped together.

Poor subject matter for dark humour and a few other flaws. 3/5.

Yeah, I would tend to agree.

In in Brudge, the hitmen are the butt of the dark humour, and you feel, ultimately, this was the life they chose.

It's a bit different with grieving mothers.
