Miss Sloan with Jessica Chastain. I'm never surprised when a European film is clever but this is an incredibly clever American film.

I did take my boy to see Dunkirk and gave him the historical context that it was some people waiting for a boat etc. He sort of agreed.

  • Saw IT last Friday. I've recently finished re-reading the novel so was expecting to be super critical of the film but I absolutely loved it. Hard to compare it properly with this only being part 1 but I can't wait for the next bit already. Thought it was really well acted, nailed the spirit of the kids & managed to get all the themes the book touches on mentioned even if it's just briefly. Pennywise was terrifying, obviously

Alien: Covenant last night. What I was hoping for was an apology for Prometheus by way of a decent film that gets back to the basics of the Alien universe - tension, action, cinematography etc. What I got was essentially Prometheus 2. It was dire. Take all that is wrong with Prometheus and overlay it on an almost carbon copy of the Aliens movie. Ridley Scott has lost it.

Get Hard - Will Ferrell & Kevin Hart.
Bulk standard non cerebral challenging comedy. Usual Ferrell kind of face pulling stuff and some quite funny scenes.
Not much else to say other than it wasn't bad and it wasn't great.

  • Got round to watching Passengers. Loved it, and its a credit to the film when such a small cast of 4 actors can make a film so good.

    Snatch

Haven't watched this in years but it is still as good as I remember it being!

Guy Ritchie can, I will admit, be an irritating arsehole but when he reins in his ego he makes good, taut action films and this one of his best.

What We Did On Our Holiday.

A lovely film. The children are the real stars, wonderfully acted, very real, I'm sure some of what they say wasn't scripted; same goes for Billy Connolly, who is doesn't seem to be acting at all.

Watched it for a second time while we were on holiday in the Highlands.

Finally got around to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 last weekend - another two hours of quite brilliant escapist nonsense. Not sure that I agree with another opinion on here (Mr Goo, I think) that it was better than the first one but that's not meant to be critical, just an indication of how highly I rate them both. Can't wait for the third one!

Passengers is the last film I watched too. The production is magnificent and your point about the cast is good but I did not like the film tbh. For me just a bit too contrived - would have been funny if she'd turned out to be a trans.

In hindsight, after watching it as in flight movie couple weeks ago I actually think it's less memorable, as the music score isn't as good as Vol 1.

  • Went to see "Mother!" last night , wife thinking it was a horror film

By far the worst ever film we have seen at the cinema, simply awful.

"He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy" - but that was funny

And my wife bought a Lavazza Coffee Machine on the way, with a meal at Zizzis, so £130 down to see utter rubbish

    Bladerunner 2049.

I think it did the first one justice. The plot was engaging enough with a similar pace and mixture of action versus story development and it had a lot of thought provoking ideas about future life. It even resurrected a dead character from the first. There were a few places where it borrowed from the scenes in the original. In particular the scene in the original where Deckard uses the photo scanning equipment. This almost spoiled it in places but if you go along with the idea that it is just portraying the technology of this fantasy future then you can just about forgive it. The soundtrack wasn't half as good as the first. There was too much product placement. Sony, Atari, Coca Cola and even Peugeot have a long future ahead of them according to this film. Much like the first it had a misogynistic feel about it.

    Blade Runner 2049...

loved it, first film Ive seen in ages that felt like a proper movie experience, paced, story, visual, sound and thought provoking, and not just a collection of cgi things having a big fight.

I liked the soundtrack, they were never going to replicate Vangelis original score, even Vangelis cant because he never wrote any of it down, so I liked it wasnt trying to copycat it, but was trying to update the sound to reflect the updated version of the future of the film itself, I think it was a good companion piece to the film.

and I consider the ad placements to be fan service, a bit like some of the repeating props (the whisky glasses) some of the tech, the street sweeper,mr off world, because everyone remembers the Pan Am and Coca Cola ads & blimpverts from the original, so yeah youve got to have a humongous Atari logo, and Sony everywhere, and very non subtle name placements because thats part of the mythology of the films.

Bladerunner 2049. I’m a huge fan of the original. This one was ok, but I found that in parts it moved too slowly, almost boring. As is his wont, Ridley Scott spends more time trying to replicate or recreate plot lines and features from the original than creating compelling characters or devices in the new one. There is a good story under it and it moves the Bladerunner universe on nicely, with an interesting central plot. The action towards the finale is gripping but the closing scene is weak. I watched it in 3D which I’m not sure added much - there were a handful of scenes that were spectacular use of 3D, mostly scenic stuff, but the the rest of the time it was a bit ‘meh’.

In the end I’ll admit it was better than I hoped, as I was expecting Ridley Scott to balls it up like he has with the Aliens universe, but it was OK and I suspect may be something of a grower that I need to see again a few times to get my head around.

I don't think Ridley Scott was involved as much as you think he was. As in you really are barking up the wrong tree completely.

There's a line of thought that says Bladerunner and Alien are the same universe. In the original Deckards spinner has a display with the same graphics as a display from the spaceship in Alien. One of the crew in Alien previously worked for Tyrell Corperation according to the CV that appears on a screen in the film. In the scene from Bladerunner 2049 where K is in the Wallace Corp building, he walks past what looks like museum exhibits of past replicants. The camera pays attention to one that looks very similar to an engineer from Prometheus.

BR2049 was about as good a sequel as has ever been made or rightly expected. The original needed the later cuts with the crap narration taken out to make it the decent film it turned out to be. 2049 was well paced, never looking for cheap adrenaline motifs such as when a killed person isn't dead after all, which happens in so many films, it looked and sounded great (As for any proper film, you'd have to be an idiot to see it in 3D). It didn't drag it's heels, it was just paced properly like all good films used to be.

I was surprised as I will normally pick films apart if they show weakness, but I thought it was well measured and the best film I've seen in a long time. Whilst I acknowledge the original was pretty good, I'm not particularly a fan of it.
  • I found BR2049 to be a sublimely crafted, beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, sonically awesome, entirely worthy sequel.

That was 30 minutes too long.

    Facebook? No. Just say no.
  • I don't think it was too long, in fact I could have stayed in there for hours. It was a totally immersive experience and I've been thinking about it all day. It's such an amazing film and I've got to see it again before it leaves the big screen. Watching it on a TV won't be the same experience.

Highly recommended visual and audio spectacle. Was never a fan of Gosling, but he did surprisingly well. Jared Leto the usual disappointing affair.

Another one for Blade Runner 2049

I really enjoyed it, I feared the worst but it didn't disappoint! Could have benefited from some tighter editing but that really is nitpicking!

Ryan Gosling, who as a general rule I find a bit on the bland side, puts in by far his best performance and Harrison Ford proves as usual that he has charisma to spare.

    Blade Runner 2049.

Visually stunning, wonderfully respectful of the original - with some amusing nods to it (Atari advert!), and in places simply wonderful to behold, with a great plot and a good ending, some nice twists.

But the Wallace guy wasn't nearly menacing enough - his sidekick was far more convincing - and some other elements felt added on, plus it was a bit long.

Overall, though, I thought it was magnificent. 9/10.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

3D really is pointless, I think it actually took away from the visual spectacle, but it was all that was available for when I could watch it. I don't think it makes me an idiot, however; if the only showing is in 3D...

By paying to watch 3D films you are encouraging the cinema to continue showing 3D films.
    Desist.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Utter tosh, but highly entertaining and gripping tosh

p.s When did Matthew McConaughey turn into such a f*cking good actor?? It's a world away from the romcom shite he used to be associated with!

the problem you get though is most cinemas converted their biggest screen to 3D, and will only show films on that screen in 2D if its a blockbuster and no 3D print is available.

that was how I got to see Dunkirk at my local multiplex in 2D on the 3D size screen, but Blade Runner 2049, theres 3D, (theres 4dx as well what on earth thats like unless you get sprayed with water for 3hrs I dont know) so its stuck on the big screen, and the 2D screenings, which I did make the effort then to go see the film again, the screen is half the size, the sound system isnt quite as good, so you are ultimately losing some of the experience

Ill only go see the Last Jedi in 2D.
