Rained for first time in a month at Pra-Loup yesterday. Lots of grime on roads. If it's wet again today, Allos descent could be scary.

Sam Bennett 3.30 off the back after 7mins of racing. Can't fault his commitment to the lantern rouge!

    No doubting the guy's guts.

MTN is 2nd in the team classification. That's pretty amazing. This team is just brilliant.

"I feel better than in 2013. I feel better and better each day. I came to the Tour for winning, not for making the top 5. My goal remains unchanged. The peloton is tired. There'll be opportunities. I intend to make the best of them."

Anyone attacking on the Marks & Spencers climb without a decent group for company is taking a huge gamble. They've the descent and then 35km all uphill to the top of the Allos and then the final cat 2. Sky might be happy to see gc rivals biting off more than they can chew.

More likely to see the real battle towards the top of the Allos with an opportunity to stretch the gap on the descent.
Yup that would certainly be the conventional time to attack, but with the big time gaps to the yellow jersey, the time for being conventional is running rather short I thought

Pity their philosophers failed to conceive of the entrepreneur.

French economic statistics claim an eyebrow raising level of productivity, or efficiency. Cameron needs to demand that Hollande puts his numbers up for independent analysis, by Nigel Farage.

My favourite French economy statistic is that despite being possessed of 3 car brands, only one car is 100% assembled in France.

      It's the Toyota Yaris.

      Neither interesting or unusual, tbf.

Lucien Van Impe says the other teams must attack sky early to isolate Froome. He thinks the Alps suit Quintana better than the Pyrenees and wants to see him put in 2 or 3 big attacks.

He also, for the first time ever, fails to mention how everything was better in his day and this lot are as pygmies compared to the men he rode against.

I'm always a little bemused by this sort of reasoning. Where is the evidence for it and doesn't the Alps suit Froome, Contador etc. just as well? Teejay Van Garderan has been waiting for the Alps too but I'm sure we're going to be seeing him lose chunks of time over the next few days as well. It's all just mind games, the strongest rider will out which is what this gladiatorial contest is all about.

Anyone with any ambitions in the GC (apart from Froome who can be excused for thinking it's not worth taking big risks with 3 minutes plus) should be up for giving it a go on the Col d'Allos descent today. Probably not rocket science but I see the likes of Tinkoff and Movistar hammering the climb to try and isolate Froome and then attacks over the summit from the GC men to get rid of Porte and Thomas if they are still there.

"the alps suit quintana" is yet more straw clutching from people who have been overhyping him for the past two years. he got comprehensively beat in 2013 and only took time on alpe d'huez because the team sky car got attacked and broke down, meaning froome couldn't get food before the climb. last year he only beat uran by a couple of minutes in the giro, hardly the stuff of "the world's best climber".

i think the only threat to froome is valverde going on a long one. quintana can't descend or climb well enough to distance froome.

Pinot, JRod, Sagan and 28 others tried to get away but been brought back.

I still can't believe they don't show the first hour, even if it is not live.

Quintana isn't the best descender though, so Movistar attacking on the descent might not suit him very well. They could obviously send Valverde instead, but he's only around 50s behind Quintana so if he gets a good gap and starts to think about moving up the GC himself things could get interesting for the team.

Can certainly see Contador giving it a go though!

      Three time GT winner Nibali:

“I'm very far away from the podium [4.17 down on Tejay van Garderen]”, the Sicilian said. “But it's not impossible. With a bit of luck, I can make it. Don't expect a solo attack in the middle of a mountain, something that guarantees they take you by the ears when they catch you later on. With fresher temperatures I'll go better and the rain isn't a problem for me. I've never felt super for all of this year. I was more self confident and determined one year ago. I'm not pissed off. I've never been able to live normally after I won the Tour. But I'll play my cards in the Alps, also for winning a stage.”

EDIT. He's back in the bunch. He wasn't 3:30 of the back - he's 3h:30m down on GC.

Yes, I misread that. He's off the back again though.

This Tour has so many top riders needing stage wins to salvage pride that alliances should be natural. One sign of blue blood in the water and the humiliated pack will pounce.

      Any Sky medical updates?

      All back together
    • I don't think the Alps will change anything. We can see already who has form or not and the placement of riders relative to each other. Will one of the other GC riders snatch a win? Possibly, but it's really irrelevant to GC. Barring injury/mechanical, Froome won't lose.

      13:48 Van Garderen in trouble

The first part of the race (about 50 riders) including the four distinctive jersey wearers is in the last kilometres but Tejay van Garderen is off the back.

TJ dropped from peloton. In group of stragglers. 40km. No breakaway yet.

13:52 One minute deficit for Van Garderen
At col des Lèques, Rafal Majka (Tinkoff) scores two points and Kristjian Durasek (Lampre) one. Tejay van Garderen is one minute behind.

edit: TJ in a group of 1. No wheels for miles.
