Stage 17 TdF 2015 Digne-les-Bains / Pra Loup *SPOILERS*
Classic Stage, same as last months Dauphiné. 161km, 6k final climb.
Where this happened on 40 years ago on the 13th July 1975 . The end of Eddy Merckx (kind of) with Thévenet putting paid to his 6th Tour. 2km before the finish there will be a temporary monument to Thévenet.
Also this..Giancarlo Ferretti threw the Bianchi team car over the edge of the col d'Allos

Bardet still talking up his chances. Saying SKY will race to the top of col d'Allos but won't want to take big risks on the descent. Last big chance for Nibali to win a stage and maybe get back a minute.0

The stage was somewhat harder in 1975....
Haha, proper parcours unlike today's training ride.Contador is the Greatest0 -
This is the stage where Merckx cracked and never wore yellow again? Interesting looking at that he actually led the eventual Tour winner on the road going into the climb having dropped him on the descent of the d'Allos and on GC going into the stage but conceded minutes in a few kms. I know this is blamed on the punch he took earlier in the race and medication he was on for the punch but I hadn't realised he managed to get over so many cols before blowing up. Makes you wonder if it was really just bonking to blow that spectacularly .[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

I've been looking forward to this stage after Bardet made that impressive descent of the Col d'Allos in the Dauphine. Time to splash the cash and put a £2 bet on him.0
-
At this point I'd take a 10s gap for Quintana as strong evidence there's still a race happening here. There was some great Pathé news footage of the Merckx - Thévenet duel on the highlights last night....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0

Why have Sky not released the power they are going to be using today?
Where is the transparency?!

no stem watching though. perhaps they are ashamed in not having them slammed?0 -
Does look like a day for a Contador attack. I suspect it won't amount to anything though.0

Lucien Van Impe says the other teams must attack sky early to isolate Froome. He thinks the Alps suit Quintana better than the Pyrenees and wants to see him put in 2 or 3 big attacks.
He also, for the first time ever, fails to mention how everything was better in his day and this lot are as pygmies compared to the men he rode against."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Big attacks on the col de la colle saint michel otherwise I can't see any attacks amounting to much.0

This is France, the only nation on earth where "philosopher" is a job title."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Watch any French current affairs programme and I can all but guarantee that at some point a "philosopher" will be asked for their opinion.
I think they see their philosophers slightly different to us. To the French, the likes of Christopher Hitchens would be seen as a philosopher rather than a journalist."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Anyone attacking on the Marks & Spencers climb without a decent group for company is taking a huge gamble. They've the descent and then 35km all uphill to the top of the Allos and then the final cat 2. Sky might be happy to see gc rivals biting off more than they can chew.
More likely to see the real battle towards the top of the Allos with an opportunity to stretch the gap on the descent.0 -
Pity their philosophers failed to conceive of the entrepreneur.
French economic statistics claim an eyebrow raising level of productivity, or efficiency. Cameron needs to demand that Hollande puts his numbers up for independent analysis, by Nigel Farage....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0 -

My favourite French economy statistic is that despite being possessed of 3 car brands, only one car is 100% assembled in France.
It's the Toyota Yaris."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

In my experience, French companies have a Special Ops unit lurking in procurement. Their mission is to sabotage as many purchasing projects as possible, keeping spending down. It drove my American employers crazy. A total success....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0 -
Pity their philosophers failed to conceive of the entrepreneur.
That's because there's no French word for entrepreneur.0 -

6km in, and apparently Sagan is already on the attack. And Sam Bennet already off them back on his own.0

Sam Bennett 3.30 off the back after 7mins of racing. Can't fault his commitment to the lantern rouge!0

EDIT. He's back in the bunch. He wasn't 3:30 of the back - he's 3h:30m down on GC.0
