Seems the Lauteret is the problem, not the G or Telegraph.
Even though the stage was ridiculously short, there's no short way around.
Latest news: The Bourg school kids on the wrong side of the tunnel can now enroll in Briançon,
having not been to school in 2 and a half months.
Don't know what the answer is, quite frankly.
Mollard/Croix de Fer or Glandon are the answers. Distance wouldn't be too different from the original route.0 -
Hansen rides again! He tweeted that he was awaiting the result of an x-ray a few days ago but sounds like that's all sorted...
Full Lotto-Soudal gang - Bak, De Gent, Debusschere, Gallopin, Greipel, Hansen, Henderson, Sieberg, Wellens
How fantastically awful is this
Chapeau!
Oh Thomas, you so dreamy"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Greipel's resisting being pigeon-holed and Hansen just wants it to stop. Total nightmare for the riders. Peloton will show no mercy. Poor lads....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0

Is it anything to do with Soudal's involvement in DIY and therefore possibly IKEA like shelving units?0 -
Lars Bak treating the sponsors with respect, giving his normal 100% effort. Meditative Greg Henderson not quite so credible. Debu shadow-boxing. Shocking posers....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0

Dutch police unions plan to block the Tour de France in Rotterdam temporarily ('to the point where it is clear on tv that riders had to stop' they say), as part of a protest about pay. Rotterdam is about halfway in stage 2 I think

Sigh. Not sure why they are going to that country which has little to commend it in any case.
Odd comment0 -
WIthout TT does Pinot stand a chance?
I always thought not, because his TT ability is bollox, but this could be his chance... as a climber he can stay with the best...
His TT ability isn't 'bollox'. It's not top drawer, but it is above average for a climber. He's not finished outside the top 20 of a TT this season, if we exclude prologues.0 -

But there isn't another viable alternative.0 -
Pretty good team that Lotto one is.Contador is the Greatest0

I can see them being boxed in in the sprints now though.
I'm here all week, try the veal.Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.0 -

I'm doing alright too De Gent, Pinot, Farrar and Cav for sure, Ten Dam I'd assume. Of the remainder, I would say there's a chnce for Dries as he didn't ride the Giro."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

It's official, no Galibier this year. Instead over the Crx de Fer to Alpe d'Huez (no Mollard): http://www.letour.fr/le-tour/2015/us/pre-race/news/ahc/stage-20-modane-l-alpe-d-huez-via-the-croix-de-fer.html
If anything that makes that stage more intense, as the descent from de Croix de Fer to Alpe d'Huez is much more direct than from the Galibier0 -
Thank goodness! And the emphasis upon the impact upon local residents is highly commendable...Despite the determination of all parties involved to conserve the original route, but more importantly to allow the population of the communities concerned to return to their normal traffic patterns, it was decided that the route of stage 20 be changed.0

Well it's 29km at 5.2%, then the Alpe afterwards.
Rather them than me!0 -
Ah, less of a brute.
Long false flat into a headwind once you get off the descent too."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Yip, as are those of us doing the Etape...0 -
Croix de Fer or Glandon I don't think there is much in it - CdF is steep and narrow towards the top if a GC man goes on the attack the peloton will be in bits. The graphics are a bit misleading the average gradients over the final 5-6 kms are what will provide the springboard for anyone having a real go. Given Contaor attacked on the Telegraphe on a short stage a few years ago I'd say this stage might see someone trying to make up time with a do or die long range effort.
Yes there are 10km of flat/v.slight drag between the foot of the descent and the foot of Alpe D'H so if there is a split it's probably not ideal for a solo rider though the descent preceeding that is as mentioned a lot more intense than the descent of the Lautaret (it's not the most technical but it's fast and technical enough with some drop offs including a catch net on one corner) and there is scope to drop a nervous descender there - especially if it rains.
That's my take on it anyway.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
The last time they did the Croix de Fer before the Alpe was in 2008 (they also did the Galibier first)
I recently watched the bit on the CdF again. It features CSC (Cancellara/Voigt/Arvesen) hammering it on the front for the Schlecks and Sastre and reducing the bunch to about 15-20. And just sitting a wheel or two behind CSC there's this neo-pro from Barloworld who keeps looking down at his stem. Allegedly he showed no talent at that age.Twitter: @RichN950 -
