Astana is making everyone in their team to look like a climber.Wonder if they will last until the 3rd week,if yes, then they should pay more to UCI for licence.

Contador saying he wanted to win to honour Pantani's memory.

Legend. And you wonder why the fans love him.

A recently retired rider told me that he thinks Contador will win Giro, Tour and Vuelta.
And presumably then claim Tinkov's bonus.

Hesjedal has heart. Rode the whole climb solo and comes in 3 mins down

David Millar is his coach this year
"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Interesting, didn't know that. Hesjedal always was a bit special in terms of attitude but am sure Millar would have augmented that.

It still surprises me when people don't expect @albertocontador to be Alberto Contador. Best GT rider we've ever seen.

I thought Millar held an anti-doping stance.

A good ride from Konig and Ryder gave it 100% as always. Hopefully Konig can go top five in the GC and Ryder will keep chipping away and might get a top ten finish next Sunday.

    DD.

You mean keep top 5...

Yep. Didn't realise he was already in the top 5. He might even get third at this rate.

Dsiappointed in Chaves but I think he was definitely not coming for GC try out just yet. Seb Heano - not sure what's going on with him as he has done almost nothing this year. Wont be one of my men next year.

I don't believe in an interventionist god. But if I did, I'd ask for any one of Quintana, Froome or Nibali to stay hearty enough to give Contador a serious challenge while he's at a peak. I'm doomed.

I know the history of his previous teams and some of his mountain performances but I need some more evidence to then put him in the Di Luca, Riis, Sella, Frigo, Millar or Armstrong rubbish bin.
Contador was targeted because of the above and it took very expensive testing to find a miniscule sample that could be used to Ban him, where he has never failed the normal testing.

    Forza Pantani and a question.
If they stay on this high mountain, will the vampires still come for the blood ??
After all this is the second rest day after which time some peculiar results come to light both here and TDF

Umm, what are you basing that on? Presumably not current form, rather your dislike of Contador?

Haha indeed. He is basing it on his intense dislike for Contador.

Froome has won one Grand Tour. Quintana has won one Grand Tour.

Contador has won 8 Grand Tours and will quite possibly have 9 when he lines up for the Tour.

Contador saying he wanted to win to honour Pantani's memory.

Legend. And you wonder why the fans love him.

“Pantani was an inspiration when I started to get interested in cycling,” Contador said. “I’d watch him on television and then I’d get out on my bike and imitate him on the climbs.”

Gibo Simoni asked Contador on live TV if he didn't want to win out of superstition, for fear of suffering same fate as Pantani. #Unclass

As you can imagine, that's caused quite a stir in Italy. Simoni was never the greatest diplomat.

As @Ciclismo2005 points out, the host, Alessandra De Stefano, didn't bother to translate the question. Probably for the best.

Info on Team Lotto Soudal from DS Bart Leysen.

"In the Giro the riders had to cover a mountain stage with finish at Madonna di Campiglio today. Maxime Monfort and Jurgen Van den Broeck reached the top of the Passo Daone – with 31 kilometres to go – in the maglia rosa group which had been considerably reduced. In the descent Jurgen Van den Broeck crashed and lost precious time. In GC he’s now eleventh at 10’05” of Alberto Contador. There is not much physical damage, only some abrasions on his arm. He hit his back as well in the crash. Maxime Monfort was strong today and finished as eleventh at 2’18” of stage winner Mikel Landa. In GC he moves from the eleventh to the eight place at 8’20”.

Bart Leysen, sports director Lotto Soudal: “It was looking good for us until the top of the Passo Daone when Jurgen and Maxime reached the top in the maglia rosa group, but halfway the descent Darwin Atapuma missed a turn and Jurgen crashed as well. Jurgen got back on his bike pretty quickly, but Astana was setting such a high pace that he couldn’t close the gap of about three to four hundred metres. Jurgen was the only one in the chase group who needed it to take back time. On the final climb he didn’t get quite in his rhythm.”

“A check-up in the hotel showed that the physical damage isn’t too bad, he only has abrasions on his arm. He hit his back in the crash, but the physiotherapist will help him with that. The rest day is extra welcome for Jurgen. He’s still eager to fight and wants to get his position of this morning back, when he was fifth. There are still four tough mountain stages to come, other than the top three nothing’s sure yet.”

“Maxime survived the Passo Daone well. He wasn’t involved in the crash. We deliberately didn’t ask Maxime to wait for Jurgen so he could secure his own place. He did that really well with a nice eleventh place in the stage and the eighth place in GC after today.”

How do you know why he is backing Froome and Quintana over Contador? Don't be so patronising.

Froome has won one Grand Tour. Quintana has won one Grand Tour.

    Correct.

Contador has won 8 Grand Tours and will quite possibly have 9 when he lines up for the Tour.

Incorrect. It is six, not eight.

Good man, Gibo. I always liked his attitude. An independent thinker not afraid to ask the hard questions. I'll bet El Pistolero squirmed when he was faced with that question!

I like him, he might not be up there with Aru and Contador but the guy is a fighter.
