It' a great plan... roll it out for all shortages... doctors, nurses etc... let the market sort out the ones who aren't up to the job.0 -
On the issue of supermarket shelves, popped in the co-op earlier and the entire site soft drinks shelving (including all bottled water) and the refrigerated drinks shelves were empty save for probably half a dozen bottles. that's not normal.
Now, I know it's hot, but I don't think it was just that.0 -

Would be a good thing if bottled water became a thing of the past. #brexitbonus0 -

How are your journey times. It takes me 10 minutes to do a 7 mile commute. How's you three mile London commute look like time wise. Is it with a field either side of most of the route. I did a ride around London the other year from stained to the queen's gaff and back south of the river. I was gobsmacked by the air pollution.surrey_commuter said:
Can you really not see the difference in scalingup journeys from 3 miles to 20 miles?john80 said:
There is nothing that makes London unable to copy others models and scale them up. What is London's existing model. Not particularly high density living, crowded narrow streets and mental air pollution. Kids who can't cycle to school on safety grounds. Christ you will have diesel buses idling in the centre for another ten years at least. It is the least ambitious city in terms of improving people's quality of life and health yet has all the capability to do so. It is actually quite embarrassing.surrey_commuter said:
I think you are struggling with scale, in terms of area London is nearly 20 times bigger.john80 said:Get yourself to Copenhagen and see what good city life is like. Over 50% of journeys by bike with good segregated infrastructure. The cars that are there seem to be able to drive around in rush hour. When you do your compulsory purchase to bulldoze all the existing London housing you can have your wide spaces similar to Copenhagen with skyscrapers in the middle. You could even build in underground electric car parking with charging stations to clean up that lovely London smog you have. Utopia people utopia.
And you can keep your compulsory purchase of homes to Cumbria, you can't just project your paranoid fantasies onto other people.0 -

I'm really not sure what the government can do about this. But it does seem that so far they have done nothing but come out with soundbites that temporarily satisfy Daily Express readers.rick_chasey said:Meanwhile in now hostile international relations with the continent

UK trade with EU falls sharply as Brexit and Covid drive down exports
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the fall was largely driven by declines in medicinal and pharmaceutical products, which have been particularly hit by the need for separate regulatory approval post Brexit
Experts said the latest ONS figures could be a sign that the UK is losing its overall competitiveness.
Ana Boata, the head of macroeconomic research at the trade credit insurer Euler Hermes, said: “UK exporters are losing their competitive advantage.”
She also cited the decline in financial services, which were not covered by the Brexit trade deal, as a contributing factor.
“Since its peak in 2017, financial services – the UK’s biggest exporting sector – has steadily lost its market share.
“The UK is the only one of the 10 biggest countries to see this happen, with Brexit exacerbating the decline.”

Judging by comments, poeple are starting to cotton on to the fact that for all Patel's harsh words, the problem has not been resolved at all.
Obviously winter will see the issue decreasing somewhat.0 -

I think the 'tough woman' act is all she's got. Like most of Johnson's cabinet, she hasn't got the intellect or strategic skills to devise a coherent and workable plan to follow through her bombast.1 -
