It's trucks with drivers that are banned, so containers and unaccompanied trailers can still go across. No idea what proportion that is.

Time for the UK to implement the same rules as the French and cause a logistical issue their side of the channel just before Christmas. This will then be over by midnight and they will have retracted their stupid demands.

We've tried the carrot approach, now for the stick version.

If most of the drivers are EU then they can get the EU to send the tests.
This will be a christmas movie next year, in Latvia....

I'm pretty sure sure it's not a once and for all time thing (if it's negative).

Yeah that'll teach them and be a huge benefit to the UK in getting a stocks in pre-Brexit.

With all the immigrants camping out alongside the motorways, within a few hours it would be complete hell for the French authorities.

Just the threat of tit-for-tat measures would have the French u-turning quicker than a Boris government

The fishing chat is becoming a bit delusional. Comparing fishing UK waters with interconnectors is like saying the UK should have the right to log German forests because Eurostar.

The EU needs to swap fishing for something of value for the UK, but has left it a bit late having removed things of value e.g. finance from the table.

I think if you'd spent the day stranded on a windswept airfield with no facilities, you'd be quite happy with veggie curry and rice.

Who wants to bet me a Belgian Beer - it is a cycling forum after all - that by this time next year Johnson will have given whatever increase in fishing we get to a friend / Tory Donor

Double or quits that the friend will have sold it back to an EU fishing firm by Christmas 2022

The road haulage association should maybe get their French mates over to Macrons gaff instead of protesting outside Dover. It's not exactly the UKs fault France closed the border. It is time to incentivise not just the cheapest delivery route. Maybe we should be insisting on a covid test on the French side.

I have got to laugh about the uproar about international truckers welfare. Last time I checked these guys had a bed, cooking facilities and a fridge in their truck. If they don't have a few days food on them to cover eventualities then they are a bit unprepared. A bag of pasta and pesto will get you through most disasters.

The UK's latest offer has an interesting component. After 5 years, the UK will be able to decide who can fish its waters; however, if the EU quota drops then the EU will have the right to impose tariffs. Sounds like a win for the EU, but the tariffs can only be set by an independent party at the level of the losses. As the fishing industry is so small, this would essentially be irrelevant for the UK, and would be a matter of the EU commission obtaining some more tax for redistribution.

Aside from the level the quota, it has the makings of a deal, as there is something for everyone. The Guardian will joyfully be able to talk about Boris capitulation whilst the Express can relish the reclaiming of the seas.

  • Has anyone done a timeline of all the "final deadlines" for this deal? Wasn't there one in June?

Liverpool paid that for a goalkeeper

Maybe Boris could set up a Justgiving page as that is less than a quid per person.
