  • Ha ha ha Stannard looks totally bored in the Sporza studio while Tommeke talks us through how Etixx lost the race.
    Correlation is not causation.
  • Just watching the sprint again, interesting study in fatigue resistance.

Terpstra's initial kick is nearly enough and even when Stannard is up to speed hes not getting around him, then after 10s Terpstra fades massively and Stannard just keeps the same speed to get around at the line.

Can't help but feel Terpstra's only real error in the final run in was to go ten or twenty metres too early. Whether Stannard should have even been in a position to compete by that point is a different issue.

I know exactly how Ian feels sitting in the interview whilst they all to talk Dutch, then just giving up and walking away... ;)

Exactly, they never used their numbers and Terpstra started a couple of seconds too early. That's bike racing though.

I'd most like to hear wtf Vandenberg was thinking when he closed Terpstra.

I think Stannard had the legs to close him anyway, but it was mad.

Yeah, I see the problem QS had there. Boonen was done in, Vandenbergh was done in and stupid and they didn't talk to each other.

I was expecting this sort of finish in ptp but assumed boonen would just follow and be there for the sprint allowing terpstra to clip off

The question was not whether Stannard would have been able to close the gap on his own, but the real stupidity was that it ruled out Vandenbergh for the next jump. Terpstra did not do that much wrong, but that Vandenbergh move was truly incredibly stupid. Quick Step was doing everything right, working Stannard over one by one, and he would very likely have cracked at some point, and if not Boonen would have won the sprint.

maybe he felt bad. having a 3 on 1 and then blocking someone in wouldn't be very nice would it? i also think that terpstra sat up in the sprint because he felt bad about riding across the front of stannard slightly before. they're actually just a bunch of nice guys.

Tommeke was recapping the race all chatty and happy and Terpstra interrupted him to say the only words he was going to say: "Talking about it is easy."

    It was hilarious.

    Ian Stannard -
    Marcel Kittel
    Niki Terpstra
    Tom Boonen

I shall be more than pleased if Ian could repeat his performance next month.
    1st page before anyone coppied
(I shall only have this result to gloat over but what a season start)
Yes I am more than pleased that "My Man" Ian Stannard beat my PTP for today Niki Terpstra.
I thought the usual Q/S team of another member getting away while the peloton watched Boonen.
So I choose Niki and in the final 1Km it looked good that the 6 day sprinter would win, but hold another thought that Ian came from Team GB, so maybe.

Outstanding Stannard was strong enough again, a sort of Deja vu, for him and a "must" in the next few weeks.
Wonderful sight (even without the rain & wind) that has opened people's eyes to something I witnessed in Kuurne.

Yes, ruling himself out for a quick jump was bad, but I just don't think they had enough between them to break him anyway. The way Stannard left Boonen out to cook, calm as you like, showed he knew he had the legs. The fact he towed Terpstra the last couple of km and still beat him is more evidence. They needed to work him over earlier but couldn't because of Sep behind them.

This in no way takes away from the fact that Vandenbergh was completely mad. I think he probably had to let Stannard out or it would have looked really bad, but wtf.

I'm not convinced Stannard left Boonen to cook after the first jump... I thought at the time it was more a case of Stannard thinking "here we go...I'm about to get worked over...". Then Stannard started turning his big gear to bridge the gap (he really doesn't have a kick to react to attacks like Boonen's) and then vdb screwed up Terpstra's counterattack. What surprsied me was how cooked Boonen was by the time he made his attack... with so little left in the tank he really should've put in a much bigger attack a few kms earlier to really give Yogi a decent sized gap to close.

    Still...talking is easy :-)

Would be good to see a replay ... any links anyone?

Watching the replay I think Vandenbergh's move wasn't so bad. 9 times out of 10 it would have ended with Terpstra and Vandenbergh away. He still shouldn't have done it though.

For me, Boonen going at 4.5km was the big mistake. It was a good time for someone to go, but Niki would've been a better bet for me. Save Boonen for the sprint.

A straight, wide road with a tailwind probably not the place either.

Good win Stannard. One of my men. Just watching the highlights.

I remember in the Veulta when Bert sat on Froome's wheel, allowed him to make the gap and do all the work and then with a K to go attacked for the stage, FF was telling us why he didn't need to work or what ever, but he says Stannard should have today. Idiot.

When Terpstra kicked VDB's initial slight acceleration to box IS in was dick-dasterdly-great...the kick to get on Terpstra's wheel was cretinous...perhaps he thought Stannard was cooked and he just wanted to have a chance to fight out the win with his teammate.
