I have SKS P45s on mine. Have 37C Sport Contacts on at the moment with plenty of room under there still.
  • Just bought the blue London Road frameset as PX had it at such a good price. Been looking for something like this for years for commuting & winter riding - discs & mudguard mounts. Had been using the PX XLS as a commuter with bodged on mudguards. Built up the LR & very pleased with it.

Best road bike: Planet X RTD90
    MTBs: Giant XTC 650B / On-One C456 singlespeed
    TT bike: Planet X Stealth
  • @mudslinger - how different does the LR feel to the XLS? The lure of the carbon XLS is always there, is it very different to ride?
  • I've only riden the LR 5K so too early to say. It is certainly heavier than the XLS. I'll try to ride it to work tomorrow.

The XLS is a great bike- comfortable & quick. Not much difference between it & my CF road bike to be honest.

  • Do you recon the LR will sell 2nd Hand.?
Had a LR for 18 months, upgraded the wheels for Mavic discs , my cycle to work has finished on my other bike and are hankering after a new one , but the LR would have to go.

Anything will sell 2nd hand, it all depends on how much your willing to sell it for.
  • I just sold my LR yesterday for £550 with mavic disc wheels

No room in the house as im awaiting my new Cube Attain SL disc arriving. Ill have a bigger house by the time my C2W starts again, so I have the option of getting a winter hack in the future.

Am I not aloud to post on this thread if I no longer own a PX LR?

Should be a good time to sell a nice functional Winter/training/commuter bike, I would've thought.
  • Thanks for the replies chaps
Still undecided , just find my LR a little heavy for the ride I do with friends a Sunday , it is usually around 60 - 70 miles with 6000 feet of climbing .
The LR is fine for my riding to work and back during the week ,Is it rational to buy a new bike on the strength of one ride a week ?

When did rationality ever come into to bike buying decisions?

So, a set of SKS Bluemels arrived this weekend.

I knew I'd have to mod the front guard mounts because of the mounting points on the fork, however when coming to fix to the fork one of the screw holes is damaged (looks stripped to me) and I can't for the life of me get the screw to take. Anyone else has this problem?

It's the first time I've tried to attack any guards to this frame so it has to be a fault from manufacture.

What are my options? I don't want to be in the situation where I have to send off the fork for them to check before replacing as it's the only bike I have at the minute and I commute on it mon - fri.
  • I've been following this thread with interest over the last few months as I have been hankering after a new commuter/winter bike for a while now.

I just pushed the button on a Dragon Blue coloured LR this morning (the Zesty Lime had sold out in my size). Heavily discounted to £549.00 and an incredible amount of bike for that price. I'm going to have some explaining to do when I get home! Can't wait to get out on it.

I seem to recall that I, and several others had a problem where there was paint on the screw threads which made getting a screw in the first time slightly tricky, but it's been fine afterwards. Have you tried turning the screw in with the mudguard fixing out of the way to start with?

Yeah, I found that problem (paint in the holes) with the rear mounts but this is completely different.

I spent a good half hour inspecting, cleaning out with cotton buds and attempting to screw the bolt in without the mudguard fixing and it just wont have it. The opposite side is fine. I've also tried a number of bolts.

It looks like half of the screw hole (inside) is missing but it's so difficult to see properly.

Took delivery of a new LR in the Sram X1 - HYD brake flavour. First impressions, it's heavy, but rolls well. I like the Sram X1, brakes aren't bedded in yet, but can see they'll be good. I do have brake rub though, a pet hate of mine from a previous disc brake bike.

Does anyone know the internal rim width of the Gipiemme Roccia Equipe wheels? I want to swap the 35mm tyres with some 28mm Gatorskins. I presume it'll be fine, but I can't find the rim widths online anywhere to make sure.

I'm having a little saddle experimentation. Fizik Arione has been fine for one-off long rides but gave me ar$e ache on bike tour, so I'm trying out a Chinese knock-off copy of a Selle SMP. Ugly thing but the cut-away seems to convert a lot of people so thought I'd give it a go. First impressions good, especially freedom in the undercarriage, but I'll need a long ride to see how it suits the sit bones. (Spot the tour stickers.)

I like your tour stickers, very cool.
Think the saddle could do with a viagra though!

Cheers! This is my favourite one.

If the droopy saddle works out, the other advantage is that it's a lot cheaper to replace than the Arione, and possibly less attractive to thieves, so I'm less nervous about leaving the bike locked up outside.
  • @PhilPub - I've just built up the LR in blue & am very pleased with it. How is your front guard attached to the top of the fork?

I had problems attaching my front guard to the top of the front folk (more to the point I had problems working out how to do it) and Ryan explained it to me here:
I repliend to Graeme in a PM but thought it would be useful to post the mothod publicly in case anybody else has the same issue:

I used one of the supplied bolts which has an allen head, into a nut. There should be one in the pack which is long enough but not too long.

    1. Front wheel off

    2. From the inside of the fork crown, feed the bolt through the rear hole in the fork and through the bracket on the front guard.

    3. Stick your allen key through the front hole on the fork crown so it engages with the allen bolt head. Thread on the nut with fingers, whilst holding the allen key steady, then tighten the nut with a socket wrench or spanner.

I've just used the front section of the fork to thread the bolt through, with the nut on the front. I can't remember whether the nut came with the guards or I just found one in the spares jar, but it's just the right length that it looks neat enough from the front. It was a bit fiddly since I needed to thread the bolt from the inside of the fork crown but an easy enough job. Having the guard as low down as possible just happens to give a good clearance line around the 32c tyre.

Ah right, this method looks to be the same as mine but using the rear hole rather than the front one. (I slotted the allen key through the rear hole, to hold the bolt in place going through the front.) As it happens, I originally tried using the rear hole but found that the clearance between the guard and the tyre was too large. I guess this might depend on which guard/bracket is being used.

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Thanks Phil & Graeme for the advice. Was hoping the Longboards I ordered would have arrived in order to fit this weekend but it looks like they are coming tomorrow. Just had a battle fitting Durano Plus tyres!

Nice winter bike! What bibs are you using? I used Fizik Arione on my DB hybrid bike and after 3rd day and 500km i start to felt the same ar5e ache. I changed the bibs and it was SO MUCH better!
If you are choosing new bibs, definitely ask for comfort pad - it is much thicker.

Thanks! I was rotating a couple of different pairs of padded shorts but had the same problem with both. It might be that 40+ hours of riding in a week would make my bottom smart no matter what saddle I'm using but I thought it would be worth trying a different shape. Still no long ride done but about 50 miles in and all's well.

Finally washed my LR last night (it was embarrassingly filthy) and swapped out the 37C Continental Sport Contacts that came with it for a pair of wire bead 38C Vittoria Voyagers that I bought cheap from Planet X a couple of months ago.

I'd been running pretty low pressures on the Continentals, but in a daze last night I pumped the Vittoria's up to the 60psi minimum listed on the tyre wall. Nearly rattled my teeth out of my head on the ride in this morning and left me with a sore elbow! Will definitely be letting some air out of the front before my ride home!

Hmm - on my ride into work this morning I was 2-6 minutes faster than I've been recently. Can't work out if the new tyres are faster, if it's the benefits of finally having a clean and lubricated drive train or if it's purely down to less traffic due to half term. Probably a combination of all 3!
