Given some of the stuff that has come out in the last year or so about some larger charities, not paying interns is pretty tame.

Well sure, there will be plenty of real stories out there. But that just makes it seem more strange to me that people make more up.

I'm sure there are lots of examples of hypocrisy on both sides of the controversial "is slavery bad?" debate.

You'd have to pretend to be working class to fulfil the quota. 😉
Depends whether you count where you came from or where you are now. The upward mobility opportunities created by the Thatcher revolution did change it for some people :)
Where you are now, obviously. I could make a similar claim, if I skip back another generation or two. Social mobility around the time Thatcher was born.
I was going on the old adage that you can take the boy out of Middlesbrough...

Depending on which side of the family I pick I could claim to be descended from East Anglian farmers

Liverpool being stripped of world heritage status for regenerating censored areas.

It definitely supports the idea of freezing something/somewhere at a moment in time.
Having been there, it comes across as a sympathetically developed area with a healthy mix of old and new.
Think the football stadium may be the straw that broke the camels back.

Have you seen the absolute state of the low-grade retail park rubbish they have put up on the waterfront?

Is it not possible to regenerate without resorting to that kind of dross?

Not sure what it is about waterfront sites but it seems to bring out the very worst of my profession.

Aren't there two approaches to restoration? One where you try to use the same materials as the old stuff so it blends in and the other where you just build something modern so it contrasts with the old stuff? From the photo it looks like the latter.

The issue is not that it contrasts with the Victorian buildings; the issue is that it's just crap.

I'm convinced some of the more conceptual architects are having a laugh at their client's expense a lot of the time just putting together joke suggestions to see which ones they fall for.

If your brand new hotel is already nicknamed The Jobbie then you have gone wrong somewhere.

It’s the worst kind of vacuous shape making. If you pinned that up for your first year crit, you'd be lucky to scrape a pass.

After saying that they are speechless, continue with a full article.

Now hang on, aren't you the same architect who gave me a hard time for my so-called opinion on what you assure me was actually a wonderful building in London, and that wasn't in fact a horrendous prison-like maze of concrete with nice fire extinguisher details?

No, I'm going to steadfastly play devil's advocate. The walnut whip creates the impression of reaching from the ground to the sky as you ascend the building, and evokes the greatest traditions of the old town in building ever upwards.

Unless she's planning to burn those things made from oil, what's the problem?

She doesn't appear to realise where these products come from.

Gteta Thurnberg - "We demand that at this year’s forum, participants from all companies, banks, institutions and governments immediately halt all investments in fossil fuel exploration and extraction, immediately end all fossil fuel subsidies and immediately and completely divest from fossil fuels.

We don’t want these things done by 2050, 2030 or even 2021, we want this done now – as in right now."
