Well sure, there will be plenty of real stories out there. But that just makes it seem more strange to me that people make more up.rjsterry said:

I was going on the old adage that you can take the boy out of Middlesbrough...Stevo_666 said:
Where you are now, obviously. I could make a similar claim, if I skip back another generation or two. Social mobility around the time Thatcher was born.rjsterry said:
Depends whether you count where you came from or where you are now. The upward mobility opportunities created by the Thatcher revolution did change it for some peopleStevo_666 said:
You'd have to pretend to be working class to fulfil the quota. 😉Stevo_666 said:As a Northerner I suppose that I should be looking forward to some of these token appointments if I want to keep going a couple of days a week when my current career is over.
Depending on which side of the family I pick I could claim to be descended from East Anglian farmers
Are there two sides to that?pangolin said:

Liverpool being stripped of world heritage status for regenerating shithole areas.0

It definitely supports the idea of freezing something/somewhere at a moment in time.ballysmate said:Liverpool being stripped of world heritage status for regenerating censored areas.
Having been there, it comes across as a sympathetically developed area with a healthy mix of old and new.
Think the football stadium may be the straw that broke the camels back.0 -
Have you seen the absolute state of the low-grade retail park rubbish they have put up on the waterfront?ballysmate said:Liverpool being stripped of world heritage status for regenerating censored areas.
Is it not possible to regenerate without resorting to that kind of dross?
Not sure what it is about waterfront sites but it seems to bring out the very worst of my profession.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Aren't there two approaches to restoration? One where you try to use the same materials as the old stuff so it blends in and the other where you just build something modern so it contrasts with the old stuff? From the photo it looks like the latter.rjsterry said:

The issue is not that it contrasts with the Victorian buildings; the issue is that it's just crap.TheBigBean said:

I'm convinced some of the more conceptual architects are having a laugh at their client's expense a lot of the time just putting together joke suggestions to see which ones they fall for.rjsterry said:Liverpool should count themselves lucky. They've actually built a censored emoji in Edinburgh.

Now hang on, aren't you the same architect who gave me a hard time for my so-called opinion on what you assure me was actually a wonderful building in London, and that wasn't in fact a horrendous prison-like maze of concrete with nice fire extinguisher details?rjsterry said:

No, I'm going to steadfastly play devil's advocate. The walnut whip creates the impression of reaching from the ground to the sky as you ascend the building, and evokes the greatest traditions of the old town in building ever upwards.rjsterry said:
