I dont believe this. Complete an utter awfulness. I really dislike the guy but removing him from the competition because ASO wanted to boost viewing figures is a complete disaster.

Ok if Contador nails this he nails this and takes 8. But it would have been SO much better if he nailed this against Froome. In a wonderfully mountainous Tour.

Who the fark knows though whether half the other GC contenders get taken out.

VUELTA will have the best field EVER

I don't get this. The Tour has (occasionally) visited cobbles for decades. NOT visiting them ever would be the change of policy to be discussed.

Imagine froome gets caught in a first week crash in France though, that's sky's entire season totally written off. Cannot be the best way to run a team.
Quoting myself for posterity from a thread in March when Sky started stripping down the Giro squad to the reserve reserves. Who is happier now; Wiggins or Bertie?

It looked like his right wrist was in a bad way. If he could have could have continued, he would have, no doubt.

The race is over now as a contest unless Nibali can hit top form. At least the Giro was a good race.

    DD.

So do we not rate little Richie then?

Frenchie, I reckon if Froome hadn't fallen yesterday he would have been fine today. Racing with shot wrists is a nightmare, especially in the wet when you need all of your sensations to feel grip etc.

Can't wait off the vuelta now though.

Yeah it must be as he wasnt moving around normally and not clutching his collarbone as far as I could make out. Not sure why he stopped other than being in excruciating pain.

Yes, he was holding that arm very gingerly across his chest. Didn't look good at all.

Whatever the cause the fact is it would be a foolish man to bet against Contador winning this whole thing by 2+ minutes now.

I wanted to see a mountain goat lose time today so I could watch the spectacle of them clawing it back in the mountain stages with the less able climbers limiting their losses.

I did not want to see one of the top 2 GT contenders abandon on stage 5 of the race I've been waiting all fricking year for.

They're not on cobbles yet, this could have happened on any flat stage.
So you don't think that there are added nerves contributing to this?

I'd have thought added difficulty in holding bars and braking had more to do with it. That happened yesterday.
It's not the only crash today. There have been about a dozen already.

It'd be a huge ask for him to match Contador given his season so far...

It is to do with the cobbles. They would usually not be riding a bloc at this stage in a race.

It is to do with the cobbles in that the peloton always speeds up and gets nervous in prep for them.

Anyway, if people are going to carp on about Wiggins and gloat about a crash I'm out of here.
    Correlation is not causation.

I cant help but think that poor positioning has contributed to Froome's falls this time around.

Contador and Nibali have been visible on the front behind their teams all day every day.

You ride as far back in the bunch has froome has, this sort of things happens.

I'm somewhat amazed that Brailsford didn't learn from 2011. Whilst Porte is a good rider, I don't honestly see him as a GC winner. Utterly predictable. Real shame as Froome vs Contador vs Nibs was going to be wonderful fun.

    Hey ho..

Are all the 5 star and 4 star cobbles riders still in the front group?

If you can't understand that the whole peloton riding flat out to position themselves for the cobbles is what's causing these crashes then you re frankly a little bit dim

If it was a normal flat stage, they would ride slowly and carefully until they got to the last 5km

If you think it's because Froome cant handle a bike then you also clearly are not watching the stage
We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

I doubt Wiggins will be happy. He's doing track intervals with Uncle Shane growling at him rather than being in cycling's biggest race

I wonder if Froome's crashes were in part the result of his wrist injuries. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a fracture impeding his ability to steer or brake.
