Blimmin' right Iain. This is ace. Even dyed in the wool, jaded, sophisticates like me are loving it.

    Cool.

I don't have enough patience to watch a flat stage for more than about 30 minutes.

Yes I did notice that. Chapeau.

Where does the name Buttertubs come from?

Assuming this isn't because some commentary team have told everyone half a dozen times already, the straight answer is that allegedly the limestone potholes there were used by farmers to cool their produce back down on the way to market.

Looks bloody amazing covered with people.

Spectacular. Well done Yorkshire, and all those who travelled.

    Yep.

Of course, this is Yorkshire, and it's a free event ;-)

    That's a proper 3rd cat climb.

I'm not sure the peloton will get up there though. The crowd will have to step back a bit.

Nup. (I find watching cycling at road side really boring)

To all those who moan about foreign spectators, we have proof it happens everywhere.

GO Jens. Giving it some gas. Love this Buttertubs climb although it is going in for ever. Definitely making a trip to this area of the World. Crowds blowing Ireland out the water. Organizers will be super chuffed. Not good to see Joaquim struggling. 'Dance for me Alberto' - brilliant.

Not seen crowds like this since they opened the first packet of Salt'n'Shake on George Square in Glasgow, 1979.

I found that interesting - it's clearly instinct and excitement rather than any intent or historical permission. The crowd looks like any Alpe.

    Just more pastey!

I thought they were pretty well behaved, didn't see any runners which is where I think most people find the problem.

Chris Horner taking pacing back on to the limits I think. Suspect he'll be a few francs worse off tonight.

Crowds were always going to be big but TdF already having better weather than parts of Southern Italy during the Giro. Not often England gets the rub of the green for a sporting event weatherwise.

Go North FF you'll enjoy it!

I thought they were well behaved as well. No-one wants to be I.D'd as the knob who brought down a rider at the TdF. Good safety advert on ITV as well.

The weather was pretty rubbish first thing - it was raining as I left York and the sun only came out at Harewood about an hour before the race proper started. Interestingly, the wind got up about the same time - it wasn't hugely windy, but definitely noticeable.

    Something else, man, something else!

Makes me remember how much I liked living in Yorkshire - tho' I don't recall so much sunshine! It's all wonderful.
