Surely the riders should have enough common sense to regulate their riding to the conditions? I assume that's what they used to do. Maybe they really have turned into robots unable to think without a DS shouting in their ear.

The Stelvio is the 4th highest road, second highest pass in Europe.

    FUN FACTS!

Always thought it was the highest pass.

Any particular reason to neutralise the descent? The roads are wet but just fine - how is that different from any other descent in rainy weather?

riders will be getting colder quicker than a descent in warm but wet weather. Can make it more difficult to control the bike.

If that's the case they should stop wasting time and energy on having this climb in the race.

Perfect roads last year as well and they - for whatever reason - decided to neutralise that one also..

I agree. It's a lovely road to include, but too unpredictable.

Didn't the Iseran cheat by building an extra road? I may have dreamed that though.

I can picture some cartoon type crash where a rider disappears into a snow bank and comes out completely white.

Did the memo about neutralising not reach the leaders then?

From what I am reading it will be neutralized only if it snows.

Got to imagine the leaders are going to take it more gingerly though. Leaders could get a nice advantage here.

Isn't that the Bonette, they built a little loop around the top to get it to be the highest road in the Alps, IIRC.

I think a few of the Maglia Rosa group will be annoyed, they seemed to think they had time to go shopping for a new outfit before starting the descent.

Cataldo, Dupont, and whichever Colombia rider that is could be sneaking away.

    FUN FACTS CONTD...

The highest road in Europe is the 2830 m Ötztal Glacier Road in Autria, it is a dead end. The Cime de la Bonette at 2802 m is a loop road and not the highest anyway.

Last time I descended the Stelvio it was 0 at the top and I only had normal mitts on. Couldn't feel the brakes after about the sixth bend; a very unsettling experience indeed until I got down to the valley floor and warmth

Uran taking it very slow. Quintana may have gapped him.

    Dupont descending well.
