We seem to be suffering Matt Rendell solo on San Sebastian. No idea how they couldn't get at least 1 or 2 from LLoyd, Stephens, Backstedt or even Boulting. V strange - Rendell creating absolutely zero atmosphere - it's like listening to IT brief out a new log-in security process at work......

Yeah he's definitely better in print or chatting on a podcast.

So, still better than Kirby then...

Apparently Eurosport/GCN had tech problems today so couldn't use there own commentators. Rendell is the world feed commentator

Oh dear, that would explain it, hopefully the replay will have the intended commentators....

That makes sense of Rendell's tweet saying he wasn't supposed to be solo, let solo on ES all stage.

ck is on the track cycling :'(

At least there can be no tooting on bidons, last or otherwise.

In the few minutes I have been watching he has made several mistakes already, calling it the last lap when it was anything but on the team pursuit :|

Is the BBC coverage any different, they used to have semi decent commentators, Brotherton to name but one.

  • I heard on Never Strays Far that ITV aren't doing the Vuelta this year so plenty more of the great man for the last GT of the year.

anyone else find it telling that CK seems to be the only one who hasnt featured on The Breakaway. Think that sums up his lack of cycling knowledge

I thought Hatch normally had the Vuelta, not because, but I gather he lives in Spain.
I'm hoping for a repeat of the Giro commentary line up, him, lloyd, blythe and kelly.

They only have the expert co-comms on there: Kelly, Smith, Blythe etc. I don't think the lead comms ever go on there
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Heard him doing that this morning on 5live. Tough gig, sailing commentary on the radio.

Seemed more interested in the cycling that was being reported on just before they went to him bobbing about on the water, to be honest.

Catching up on today's track events and liking Jo Rowsell's batting back of the Witterman's more banal drivel.

Jo is doing a great job anyway but as orraloon says she handles Kirby really well. And then she is training to be a doctor. Full of respect for her.

I find Kirby OK on track. There's still the issue of him saying dumb things, but he has less time to do it and rider identification is not so much of a problem. I prefer them to Brotherton/Boardman who are just fine as well.

I guess a madison may change things

He was harping on about calling Jeffrey Hoogland Jeffrey Hooligan, for some unknown reason, and reckoned the man himself would probably like it.....
Pretty sure Rowsell said that only he could get away with saying that.

Pretty sure he was commentating on the seeding rides for the men's sprint, talking about an Aussie, all sorts of tales, great potential, still no Olympic medal to show for it etc, then at the end of the ride Rowsell calmly interjected that it was a totally different rider, all be it another Aussie.

I find Carlton a bit like Marmite, great in moderation but too much is hard to digest.
However he is gods gift to commenting in comparison to those two numpties doing the climbing.

I find ck like beans, indegestible.

Shame marchant got taken outm but I maybe lingering at the back has extra risks - I think that would have been a good shout for a medal.

JK looks off the boil, I suspect he will retire after this.

Carlin is on fire - not sure what happened to the likes of Jo Truman and others who used to ride sprint (Ryan Owens, Philip Hindes) in recent years - or are they only allowed two in the sprint?

ck "That's carlin through to the medals"
Rowsell "That's him through to the last 4 yes"

Great training for her in dealing with future patients who know exactly what's wrong with them and how it should be treated. Even when they're completely incorrect.

Philip Hindes is there, presumably as the fourth man for the team sprint.

Although Carlton usually pisses me off, I'm rather enjoying him and Jo doing the track.Jo is just great in the way she handles him.

A classic today along the lines of (after Carlton had said something half sensible)...

"Hang on Carlton, people will start thinking you know what you're talking about".

In fairness to him he takes the putdowns in good spirit. I think he rather likes her.
“You may think that; I couldn’t possibly comment!”

  • Carlton is acceptable in something like track or TDF sprint stages where riders are quite easily identifiable
