I have to be honest, not having listened to Boulting for a while, maybe I've been spoiled by Hatch, Blythe Lloyd, Kelly etc, but it wasn't anything like as good as I recalled it to be.

Millar is still good and inciteful, with his dry humour, but I don't think he had much to say on the actual sprint finish.

Much as it pains me to agree, between the two, ck did a better job :#

Boulting is better in more of an Imlach style non-commentary role. He's never been great in the commentary box. I like him but he just isn't the right person for that job.

    ITV 4 coverage is Shiite.
Not taking any of the stage starts and they’ve completely missed today’s action

Roland Garros they we’re on all day and much of the night

ITV4 should take Carlton on as their main commentator. That way all the newcomers can watch on ITV and appreciate his entertainment value that people like to comment on here occasionally together with the endless and breaks and those who follow cycling more seriously get ad free coverage with decent commentators on ES / GCN.

    Are you commentating or DSing?

Commentating. I think I'm ok at the sprints, though granted with no pressure and no audience apart from an annoyed wife it's very easy to say that.

Just going slightly off tack but I fail to see any entertainment value in the car shots of the FDJ bloke screaming into his radio in today's coverage, I had to mute it in the end, just a load of shouting that was right getting on my t-ts.

Me too. no wonder riders complain.
Just imagine having to put up with that racket when you are flat out, trying to concentrate on staying upright on a tight twisty course.

If he thinks that is motivational, he's as barmy as he sounded.

It led him into a 'Cav tells history...' line he couldn't find the words to complete. Kirkby did a much better job on this stage finish

No, I concur, He went for the classic commentary moment and blew it...

When is history in charge of anything? And also, surely this would be an example of it being in charge..?

We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

It's been troubling me who Sean Kelly was reminding me of.

(And I mean this with the greatest respect)

How did Sean's quote go today, something along the lines of "he will p-ss off up the road"

I think it was yesterday Sean was trying to say UAE, and managed to say something like EAU 2 or 3 times, and then apologised, and corrected himself to AUE before continuing :D

I find his mistakes endearing for some reason, maybe because I kow he is an ex rider and still genuinely (to my mind) enthusiastic about the sport.

I wish we had Blythe on this tour commentary team :-(

Kirby's been more tolerable in the shorter rotations they are doing in the Tour.

He said some utter nonsense about Tignes the other day, like he had never heard of skiing before.

Agreed, in small doses it's been viable, I suspect I kind of tune him out a fair bit, and then tune back in properly when Hatch re-appears - a bit like I do with adverts.

The first time I really noticed him this year was on that stage to Tignes and yesterday he was his old screaming self on Ventoux but definitely far better having the rotation.

I was surprised to switch over from ITV 4 to find Hatch for the finale.
They have been a great comfort during the Kirby sessions.
Unfortunately, should Cav be there searching for number 4 tomorrow, he will now definitely be accompanied by the Manic Screech Prattler.

He was. And whisper it gently, but he got less confused in that finale than Boulting did.

The problem with CK is that it is just stream of consciousness with no pause. If he just stopped for a second and had a think about it then he'd give some useful commentary. Instead its just whatever he sees straight out of his mouth so he starts rabbiting on about this rider and that rider and toots from the bottle and a roundabout and the shiny helmet and the madness....

No idea. London? Somewhere easily commutable to the Eurosport studio since he is there all the time. Seem to remember they're in Guildford?

Ah, the classic of telling us what the rider is saying to himself at any given time.
