A ham to his widow? Capital!

Only if it were Christmas day. Deducted from his last wages, of course. But an absolutely splendid ham at that, the finest ham money can buy.

Bike? You were lucky to have a BIKE! We used to have one bike for all hundred and six of us, no gears. Half the saddle was missing; we used to have to use our feet for brakes.

You were lucky to have have a shared bike! *We* used to have to use a trike that belonged to the nuns and that we could only use every other Wednesday. Ohhhh we used to dream of having a bike and feet for brakes! That would'a been heaven for us in the orphanage for crippled footless children.

Well when I say "bike" it was more a few pieces of scaffolding held together with barbed wire with tin cans for wheels, but it was a bike to US...And you lived in an orphanage for crippled footless children? What sweet charity! We lived in a cardboard box in the middle of the road all one hundred and six of us...

It appears that Contador has been welcomed back to the peloton by his peers. It's not uncommon to hear top riders praising his racing. Might just be time for the fans to drop the hate. Froome's a great racer too: the antiskyist. There's plenty to admire in both.

As to Froome's supposed deficiency in race-craft, it's scandalous that the 100km solo defence of his jersey while at the mercy of all his major threats is overlooked.

    As was Valverde before him.

Contador is a nice guy. His peers generally like him. He's polite and well manner.

Froome is a nice guy. His peers generally like him. He's polite and well manner.

Contador's background is not that well off. Froome was better off, by pure chance of birth.

Contador grew up in a country with a history of cycling, big races and a lot of opportunities. Froome did not.

So there we go, 2 guys who're nice guys, had different chances in life and have both won the TdF. They both suffer the same on the bike too.

Neither is more worthy than the other.

Now I like you Frenchie - And I like your cartoonish / romantic view of cycling / nostalgia for a cycling that never existed, but you're being a bit OTT, even by your flamboyant standards.

I'm poor, from poor parents in a poor mining town.

I hate bertie 'cos he's got millions and millions of money.

    no I don't. I dislike him because he's a lying cheating bastard.

I object to this. There ought to be a preventatively high fee charged for posting messages on the internet to keep riff-raff like you off it. Please have the good grace to accept your station in life and cease from bothering those of us who detest you for being poor.

sorry mlud. I've got a penny in saving though, does that count?

A penny you say? How delightful for you.

Note to self: raise duty on beer. Far too many apparently poor people have savings that aren't benefiting the economy.

Why is it that some people want to make any disposition to appreciate or dislike a certain sportsperson into some black and white categorisation of hater/fanboy camps? I think MOST people who dislike AC a bit (to be relevant to how this thread has evolved) are pretty rational about it. For most of them I'd wager that it just comes down to the fact that in their eyes he has a very dubious history regarding drugs and blood doping, and when compounded by how he has dealt with it it makes these people simply not take to him. But that's it. All this hater/fanboy stuff says more about the people who choose to do the categorisation than it does about the people they try to categorise.

Perhaps I've got it wrong. Also, perhaps most people who like pro cycling have an incredible amount of fanatical energy invested in certain individuals, but I seriously doubt it, not least because there's a quite a line between being passionate and mental.

I would disagree that Froome is a nice guy on the bike or that his peers like him. It is common knowledge that he and Sky are really not very well liked.

However, I can see your points. My comment was tongue in cheek to counteract the irrational Contador hate. Some of the subsequent posts could be deemed worthy of a report (like nameless people did to me) if it were not for the somewhat subjective interpretation of the use of sarcasm.

As I have said before, under different circumstances, Froome would be in my top three riders to root for.
