    Hi,

Does anyone have any Garmin routes from Central Palma that you could recommend?

    Thanks

    Don't have them on Garmin, but here's one that's simple enough;

Head North out of Palma by going up the Born. Keep going, no turns, and follow signs for Puigpuinyent. About 5km before Puig, bear left up the hill towards Calvia; nice climb. Then descend into Calvia. Then left (south) towards the sea and Palmanova, and follow the coast road back to Palma; about 50km ish. Nice ride.

Or for a spectacular big one, head out to Andratx then climb up to Estellencs, and ride the coast road all the way to Soller (or you can pull off before if you're knackered ; lots of climbing, but amazing views).

I have the go ahead for a trip out in April/May 2015
Me and a mate with the partners and our child.
    Probably do Pollensa or Alcudia.
Can't decide on package or villa and flight

How far do you want to ride?
    Flat or hilly?

I'm curious why you wouldn't stay in Palma? Not saying right or wrong, just curious on your thought process…

Some of the package prices can be pretty unbeatable, which rules out Palma, but getting your own place and flight gives you much more flexibility and space.

    Hi Bernie,

My thought being that I would be closer to the main climbsso would be back at a reasonable time in the morning.
I may have this wrong but was thinking of setting off for 6am have a cycle, coffee stop and be back by 11ish to spend the rest of the day with my family.

Am I being optimistic or naive?
Wha would be the benefit of Palma from a family and cycling POV?

I think people gravitate towards the port de pollenca because its traditionally been the place brits go to and there are lots of relatively cheap rooms plus cheap places to eat. Cyclists love a bargain! It's not the best place to stay to easily access all the cycling the island has to offer.

Perfectly reasonable plan, but you could do the same thing from Palma; you have medium climbs right on your doorstep, and larger ones up the West Coast and all around Soller. The only decent climb that is a bit distant is Sa Calobra.

I would say the biggest benefit of Palma is for the rest of the family; wife and kids. There are shops and bars, museums, cathedrals, etc. etc. Happy wife = happy cycling!

April is still a bit cool for beach stuff, and the sea isn't warm then, so pools and beaches have less importance than in say June to Sep.

Anyway, whatever you choose I'm, sure you'll enjoy it!

Coming home on Sunday but have to say the climbs are awesome. Sa calobra is just nuts!

I went there to ride my bike, not be around kids & families. I think the North of the island is much nicer.
I stayed in Port Pollenca but also like Alcudia. I'd never stay in Palma unless I was going on a lads holiday

Port de Pollenca is pretty much spot on as it has everything needed for an excellent family holiday but if you want a quick ride in the morning with some hills you can ride up to the Cap de Formentor. Even the ride up to Lluc isn't that far.

Palma is a lovely city but I wouldn't use it as a cycling base precisely because it's a city, with Port de Pollenca, you can be outside the built up area within 5 minutes and onto country roads.

Any recommendations for Port de Pollenca

    1. Place to stay
    2. Best time to go?
    3. Places to hire a bike?

Would like to see what it's like and take the missus who doesn't ride so would need somewhere fairy decent to stay so she doesn't moan (as much!!) easy access to the beach etc.

    Cheers

I know of ONE climb within "easy distance" of Palma and its steep as hell and not known to the tourists.
Frankly I get the idea of the Pto Pollenca family holiday plus concept, but failing that id stay somewhere in the middle (Sta Maria, for example) where the family can get a 10 min train ride into the centre of Palma
btw, I hope you've got a tourist license for your rental, they are easy to obtain and "Turismo" is checking up like crazy this year, its safe to assume they check all of the large public rental websites

All of Port de Pollenca is within 5 minutes walk to the beach so no worries on that score. Best time to go is probably April / May as it's not too hot and packed with cyclists. Best place to hire probably Pro Cycle Hire, right on the front.

Now then, currently looking at going out in late August into September. Would I be mad to look at riding at that time of year with the temps? Would be solo, the wife has no interest beyond relaxing

Looking at a couple places at the moment first in Lluc Major, second Felanitx. From a biking POV anyone have thoughts on the better location?

Final thoughts, take my bike in an Evoc bike bag or rent? By the time I compare costs works out about the same.

    What say the knowledgable? :D

Get your riding done early in the morning them no problem with temperature!
LLuc major is fine, but quite flat near there. Lovely flat scenic rides. But you are an hour away by bike from the big hills. If you are renting a car no problem.
If you are taking luggage anyway no problem to take your bike as well. If you hate airport waits and go handbaggage only then rent.

Booked in to Porta pollenici in two weeks time , bike is hired and should be ready to rock and roll.
My question is ,should I buy a map (never been before) or can I just pick a road and ride it>
I am aiming to do hilly rides of 2 -3 hours.
Look forward to any help given.

Wait till you get there. There is an excellent cycling map http://www.stanfords.co.uk/Countries/Sp ... 903639.htm which is laminated, and cheap locally. Has all the routes and gradients.

You looking at staying in those places? Strange choice as they are inland, but if you aren't bothered by sea / beaches I suppose that's ok.

The South East isn't the best biking country unless you're after flat rides - it's not that there are no hills of course, just nothing on the mountains in the North.

I'm going to Cala d'Or in October which of course is about as far from the mountains as you can get but I'm still planning on riding across to Soller.

Off to Palma tomorrow, but won't be doing much cycling, too hot for me.

May just do a hire bike ride on one or two mornings, so will be mostly R&R!

I'd get it before you go, you can then get an idea of how the routes work and the layout. The best thing I did was buy a Garmin 810 with a european city navigator map loaded, there are so many small roads (Cami's) that it can sometimes be confusing as to which one you should be taking, and then you have the one way systems in most of the towns to find your way around.

Im returning for two days end of September after an amazing trip in May. I stayed in Cala D'Or and rode the baby mountains - San Salvador and La Randa. Im going to stay close to the airport to save transfer time and want to do the big mountains this time. Is this possible from Palma without having to ride 100 miles + And only having two days which climb should i prioritise ? Puig major ??

I was also thinking of exploring the South West of the island - there looks to be some nice climbs down there. Has Anybody ridden over that way - down towards Andratx ??
